Darin Bastedo Posted July 19, 2007 Posted July 19, 2007 Not many people know this but I am an avid Indy Car & Formula One Fan. I've been hording open wheel racing kits since I went to my first CART race, the Kent Oil 150 at Watkins Glen 1979. The stiking young man with the bowl cut behind the rear wheel of Gordon Johncock's #20 car is me. The Car I'll be replicating is This Ferrari F189 I'll be using The Hasegawa/Protar 1/24 kit. as you can see there will be a lot of work in completing this, as only the barest of essentials were included in the kit. The first part is cleaning up the one million ejector pin marks from the about every kit piece. At least there is very little molded in detail, making it much easier to add the parts I plan to scratch build. The engine is almost toy like. I will be scratch building a new one. here's some pictures of the 1:1 engine that I will be basing my build on... I'm hoping to have this done by sept. for this year's Foothils Fall Classic.
mikelo Posted July 19, 2007 Posted July 19, 2007 Wow. Great project. Aggressive time frame. I'll be looking for your updates. I have a couple older Tamiya F1 cars and wow, that kit is pretty simplistic looking. Keep us posted.
ismaelg Posted July 19, 2007 Posted July 19, 2007 Cool project Darin! Looking forward to see its progress. Thanks,
simonr Posted July 21, 2007 Posted July 21, 2007 Jmmm, the interesting beggining of an interesting project!....I'll keep an eye on this one. Simon Rivera
Darin Bastedo Posted July 22, 2007 Author Posted July 22, 2007 I've made some progress on this one. the mult piece body is being saned and adjusted so all the body joints are flush and true. Also because the kit engine was so toy-like I'm in the process of scratchbuilding a replacement... You can see by how small the engine is as it is dwarfed by a Cobra.
Darin Bastedo Posted July 27, 2007 Author Posted July 27, 2007 I got some more done on the engine.... I also sratchbuilt a new footwell out of evergreen sheet plastic. I still have a long way to go but it is starting to look like a Formula one Ferrari
Enzoenvy1 Posted July 27, 2007 Posted July 27, 2007 Great build and a great bowl haircut for back in the day! Seems like you have been lucky to attend a lot of events over the years. That engine looks great, yours and the real one, lol. I will follow this one!
MoparMarc Posted July 27, 2007 Posted July 27, 2007 I've always liked watching these cars race on TV and want to build one someday, I'll be watching this.
