Miserable Soul Posted July 3, 2012 Posted July 3, 2012 New here, so let me know if something similar to this has been covered already. Just curious what different steps or "procedures" u guys do when starting a new build. At this point I still just build a kit right out of the box and don't vary it much. I consider it a "custom" if I use different paint than whats on the box Would really like to get into a more custom type model, but just want to build up my confidence. Thanks !!!
Joker Posted July 4, 2012 Posted July 4, 2012 Rich...if it's just custom paint..don't over think it..just make your choice. If it's body modification..google custom (insert car make here) and look at the images. The H.A.M.B. forum has lots of kustoms and a really good source is Rik Hoving Fotki Page..all makes and builders,painters..etc. Rik's link...http://public.fotki.com/Rikster/ Bookmark it for future use.
MAGNUM4342 Posted July 4, 2012 Posted July 4, 2012 I start by seperating all the parts from the trees and placing them into sub assemblies. All the engine parts go into a baggie, all the suspension into another and so on. Next I pick one, usually the body and clean up all the mold seams, ejector pin marks and flash, prep and paint. While the body cures I start the same process on the next baggie, usually the engine. When I have all my sub assemblies cleaned up and thier main color on, I then start over at the body adding the little details. Bare metal foil, touch up or detail paint and so on. Then when that is done I assemble. I don't do much heavy detailing as far as photo etch or plumbing and such but I will occaisionally ad a wired distributor.
jamesG Posted July 4, 2012 Posted July 4, 2012 you and I seem to be about equals as I too have always built o.t.b. just do what I do add a new technique with each new project. If you don't get something right try again on the next one eventualy you'll get the hang of it. Igot my flocking down pretty good and tried bare metal foil but still need to work on that one. next up is wiring an engine though I may not do that one too much. all in good time.
Miserable Soul Posted July 4, 2012 Author Posted July 4, 2012 ok....where do u guys usually find the stuff for flocking, metal foil, and engine wires? All online or does your local hobby store have all this stuff?
Joker Posted July 4, 2012 Posted July 4, 2012 For me...it's Chesterfield Hobbies and my buds in the Model club.
MAGNUM4342 Posted July 4, 2012 Posted July 4, 2012 Some LHS's will stock that stuff. I usually go evilbay for most of it but wiring can be found at radio shack and flocking at craft stores in the stamping section from what I understand.
91blaze Posted July 4, 2012 Posted July 4, 2012 ok....where do u guys usually find the stuff for flocking, metal foil, and engine wires? All online or does your local hobby store have all this stuff? Use embossing powder instead of flocking because it's cheaper and IMO looks more realistic. You have to buy foil online unless your hobby store has it. And for the wire, just go to radio shack or steal some out of non-working electronics. If you buy wire online, you will overpay way too much. Electrical wire also works for coolant hoses as well. If you do a little looking around in the "Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials" and the "How Do I" section you will find plenty of resources and out-of-the-box ideas.
jamesG Posted July 4, 2012 Posted July 4, 2012 flocking and embossing powder can be found at hobby lobby or michaels in the scrapbooking section, foil at hobby store, 30 gauge wrapping wire for dist. at radio shack, also check out the beading wire at hobby lobby it comes in lots of cool colors.
