You can get real narrow tape from Line-O-Tape. Go to the website and call the guy to order.

I tried doing this once. Let's just say I wasted a lot of time and a roll of tape.

You can modify a standard x-acto knife by widening the slot the blade slips in and then it will accept two blades and you'll get a small space between them.You still have to run the blade along a straight edge. I've also seen a tool for this in Micromarks catalog.
