Ken McGuire Posted August 19, 2012 Posted August 19, 2012 (edited) Howdy, I'm getting back to modelling after many years and have to re-learn old skills. I will be building a 1929 Ford Hi-Boy based on Replicas & Miniatures resin body and will (I think) paint it with some Apple Green Pearl Candy auto paint over either a white or gold metallic base, then clear coated. My question relates to decals (e.g., flames) and auto paint. Would auto paint adversely affect decals? Can I put on the decals, then do a clear coat over them? Edited August 19, 2012 by Ken McGuire
Guest G Holding Posted August 19, 2012 Posted August 19, 2012 Hey..welcome back. Yes and No...some will work with clearcoat, some won't. Most folks do a test with an extra decal off the same sheet. There are lots of different clears...acrylic, enamel, lacquer, urethane. They are different and so are the decals from different sources.
Mike Kucaba Posted August 19, 2012 Posted August 19, 2012 Protect the decals with Future floor finish. AKA Pledge with Future shine. I decaled the ALA KART and sprayed Future over the decals, then shot PPG lacquer clear thinned with PPG lacquer thinner and there was no damage.
Ramfins59 Posted August 20, 2012 Posted August 20, 2012 I've used Duplicolor Acrylic Lacquer over decals with no problems at all. Just be sure to put the clearcoat on in light coats to start with and then build up to heavier coats once the first couple of light coats set up for 10 to 15 minutes each.
fatkidd Posted August 20, 2012 Posted August 20, 2012 I use all House of Kolor products for the paint and kandies that I use and I use Nason SelectClear 2 part urethane clear on all of my builds. I don't use many decals, but for the ones that I do use, I let them dry for 24-48 hours before I spray clear over them. This should prevent any water coming back to haunt you. here's a couple examples...

Ken I've been teaching Modelers about House of Kolor Products and making Custom Decals for years, Cured Paint, auto or otherwise, will not react with Decals. I purchase all my Decal Paper from Papilio.com Here's a few shots of my Decals over House Of Kolor Paint, I lay down my Decals over basecoats, over candies, even under candies for ghost effects, and all are clearcoated with House Of Kolor Urethane Clear. Using my CadillacPat Ovens I can Clear over my Decals in 45 minutes, All Products Used Are Exclusively House Of Kolor, Of Course!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! CadillacPat
