Wildrice Posted September 24, 2007 Posted September 24, 2007 (edited) Does anyone know what year the kit was based on? I'm getting ready to build my 1st ever big truck. Any good reference sites for pics of these trucks? Edited September 30, 2007 by Wildrice
mackinac359 Posted September 24, 2007 Posted September 24, 2007 The kit was released in 1971 so one could assume it is a 1970-71. The L-series remained virtually unchanged until the end in the 90s. The grille changed in the 70s with a larger surround, a larger bumper offered, then in the 90s a new grille and rectangular headlamps. Also in the 80's the "FORD" changed to a blue oval. The side of hood nameplates changed in the 90s to the more modern style. Tim
Albert Moore Posted September 24, 2007 Posted September 24, 2007 (edited) Try here for references; http://www.hankstruckpictures.com/ Type in 'Ford L Series' into the search engine for the pics. Don't think there will be much in the way of a 'walk around' reference but there will be all kinds of overall pics of the Ford L Series in all kinds of configurations. Jim B Posted September 24, 2007 Posted September 24, 2007 As far as references go, least we forget: http://public.fotki.com/modeltrucks25thsca...brochures/ford/ Lot's of good stuff there. Oh, and Dan's Model Truck World makes the logos for the side of the hood if your drybrushing skills are as bad as mine (or they get totally obliterated by the body paint job, like mine did).
mackinac359 Posted September 25, 2007 Posted September 25, 2007 Decals.. go with the decals! Wildrice Posted September 30, 2007 Author Posted September 30, 2007 I'm getting ready to start on this truck. Any problems I need to look out for? What is a good color to use for engine?
sourkraut Posted September 30, 2007 Posted September 30, 2007 Engine should be Ford blue. I haven't built one in about 10 years, if I remember correctly the cab position and hood to cab fit are a little fussy. I modified my fire wall and dog house to fit a Cummins with Roadranger transmission and hinged the hood, but that's another matter all together.
Jim B Posted October 1, 2007 Posted October 1, 2007 Another thing to look ut for is there is a 3/16" gap between the back of the cab & the front of th van. This is for the optional chome exhaust stacks that run up the back of the cab. If you don't use the stacks (like me), you'll have a big gap between the back of the cab & front of the van, so you might want to play with the positionng of the mounting rails & the van body. Yes, the engine should be Ford blue & the transmission should be aluminum.
