Car photos 1967-69

I'm building Revell's 1957 Chevy 150 2 door sedan kit. My wife wants me to build it as a street rod, but I'm taking that a few steps farther. I want to build it as a teenager's car from the late 60s. Those of you who were teenagers from that era know what I'm talking about; bumpers and grills removed, fancy mags and tires on an old beater car, and who could forget the junk yard bucket seats-those that when you sat in them you knew why they were in the junk yard in the first place.

What I'm needing is photos of your rides or friends rides from that era. I want to make sure that I have all of the equipment period correct for the era. I'll be aiming for the 1967-69 time frame.

This was my brother's 57 around 1967. I had a Matador red one with no front bumper or grill but can't find any photos.

Cool Idea! When I was in high school; (in the 60's)A lot of guys couldn't afford mag wheels,so black rims with baby moons and those 'new' narrow whitewalls were the ticket. Maybe a chrome tube grille.Of course the back end was jacked up. 8 tracks came along in the late 60's,but guys would put speakers in the package tray by the rear window. And a 3 spoke steering wheel. Now you're talkin'...

In southern California in the '60s you used to see a lot of black wheels with blackwalls, with or without hub caps. Lots of recapped pie crust cheater slicks, too, whether you needed them or not. Mag wheels were mostly for the bucks up guys, but chrome reverse wheels were more affordable. Those who could afford it took their cars to Tijuana for cheap black interiors, including headliners. One quirk that I remember was for those of us with '55 or '56 Chevys to remove the Chevrolet emblem from the hood and deck lid, punch out the red, white and blue emblem part and then reinstall the surrounding chrome...don't ask me why. Tractionmaster traction bars were popular, as were muffler shop installed cut outs in the exhaust system, so you could uncork at the drags. Speaking of which, we all left the shoe polish entry number and class designation on the windows until rain washed it off. Finally, remember this is the perspective of a high school kid with no money--I worked part time in a gas station for $1.25 an hour in those days.

I'm in the Studebaker Drivers Club. A man in Washington state had the nicest little '54 Commander Starliner with a 365HP Corvette motor and Chevelle bucket seats. I asked him about the car...

"I built the car like I would have in HS if I had any money".

I'm doing the samething with my 1964 Daytona in 1:1. I didn't graduate until 1982. I decided the 'time' of the car would be 1968. My high tech sound system is a AM radio, an FM converter and an 8-Track tape player.
