ERIK88 Posted June 22, 2013 Posted June 22, 2013 I understand to sand prime then sand and prime , sand then lay down a few coats of paint , And let dry , then buff, and polish then lay down clear. but my question is what is this method I hear about wet sanding while the paint has been layer down and completed ? Following a polish ? Ido know it was sponsored by McDonalds with Ron Barfield as the driver, although Bill himself ran some races.Does anybody have pics of his truck or know where to find some? _________________ on the bench: custom LNT 8000 Ford hauler, carrying a 56 Ford F100 2wheel drive puller truck with a supercharged Boss 429 engine. I assume 96-97ish by the other photos of the #94 car's that were in the shop. It was a fan club open house and dad drove me all the way down to GA to check everything out. They had a little bit of everything in there. They had Barfield's #94 New Holland Busch car, a #94 ARCA car that looks just like the truck, and of course, the truck. Dont have a scanner so I did the photo of a photo trick. I cant tell if this is a raced truck or not. It does have white marks on the pipes (which means nothing) and red tape on the lower grille and all over the front valance so there is a possibility. This truck could easily be pulled off, only things I can see you would need besides a Elliott sheet would be the large super 8 logo for the hood and Ron's name which is in simple cursive, no fancy signature and I'm sure some of the decal guys on the board could make them. Hope these help _________________ ________________ Currently on bench: Who knows?!? Found out that the #94 truck was ran 7 times in 1996 and Bill drove the #4 ASE truck in the '96 finale 3/17/96 Homestead (Florida Dodge Dealers 400) 4th place 4/21/96 Phoenix (Chevrolet Desert Star Classic 300) 8th 5/4/96 Portland (Craftsman 200) 11th 5/11/96 Evergreen (Jerr-Dan/Nelson Truck Equipment 200) 9th 7/6/96 Milwaukee (Sears Auto Center 200) 28th 10/26/96 Phoenix (GM Goodwrench/Delco Battery 300) 27th 11/3/96 Las Vegas (Carquest 420 K) 19th and Bill ran the Vegas race in the #4 ASE and brought it home in 2nd Maybe this will help you locate some photos since you now know the races _________________ ________________ Currently on bench: Who knows?!? Wow, I thought I had an eye for detail and you picked out the white roof # from the little bit you can see......Amazing, I had no idea that car was run @ the finale. I checked my '97 model and it has a yellow roof number. So I can say I never knew that. I was a huge Elliott fan and have a PILE of misc items from diecast all the way to his business card when we stopped @ his car dealership. They showed me the conference room with the big mural painted on the wall, I believe it was of one of the red Coors cars. Great childhood memories of great times with my dad. All my collection is packed up and stored in totes, if you are interested in any of it, PM me.......Sorry for hijacking _________________ ________________ Currently on bench: Who knows?!? There could possibly be more, if so, they are not with these in this binder. This is the rest of the photo with the finale car (probably only shot I have of this car) Random '96 car '96 Talladega wreck car, what was left of it after they stripped it all Barfield's Super 8 ARCA car Only picture I could find from Ernie's engine shop. I have used this reference for colors and wiring on all my mid to late 90's Elliott builds I think there is 1 or 2 more from the engine/parts room but I'll really have to dig. This engine photo could also be used in building the truck as I'm sure Ernie supplied engines to this team as well. I have more mid 90's teams shop photos if anyone is interested, I can PM them, I have a few shots of the Kranefus-Hass #37 Lincoln test ride as well in purple /orange trim _________________ ________________ Currently on bench: Who knows?!? Ace-Garageguy Posted June 22, 2013 Posted June 22, 2013 (edited) What's all the other garbage besides the question ?? You seem to have a couple of things out of sequence. Scuff or sand bare plastic and prepare bodywork. Primer. Sand. Re-prime and resand as necessary. Paint. Sand and repaint as necessary. Do NOT (usually) sand the last coat of metallics before clearing. Solid colors can be sanded with 3000+ to remove peel and trash, if necessary, before clearing. Solid colors can also be sanded up to 12,000 grit and polished without the need for clear. SOME metallics may be sanded and polished without clearing, but NOT ALL. Spray clear. (clear 'paint', not Future) I recommend 3 coats minimum. Sand clear with 3000 up to 12,000 grit, then polish. Wax (if desired, AFTER paint is THOROUGHLY dry) Sanding of the last coat of paint or clear BEFORE polishing is called "color sanding". SOP. Same process on 1:1 high-quality paint jobs. ERIK88 Posted June 22, 2013 Author Posted June 22, 2013 (edited) Oh on very interesting info, I guess I was missing out on color sanding . For example right now I painted a 32 ford gloss black, let dry then wet sand the gloss paint job with 3,000 grit so it cleans up any imperfections, paint over it again. Along with the other steps with the clear and polish. Thanks a lot . Oh and I hope u don't mind me asking another question, what can happen if I paint when it's really humid out? Edited June 22, 2013 by ERIK88
Ace-Garageguy Posted June 22, 2013 Posted June 22, 2013 .....................Oh and I hope u don't mind me asking another question, what can happen if I paint when it's really humid out? Different paints react differently to excessive humidity. Lacquer, some basecoats and some enamels will "blush" if shot under humid conditions, but the only way to be certain of YOUR particular paint on any given day is to shoot a test piece, using the materials and spray pattern you want to use on a model. The good news is that you can spray more coats of lacquer over blushing with no ill effects, and the blushing WILL polish off of the final surface...really. Try it on a junk body, on a hot day just after a thunderstorm, when everything is steamy. if you use some paint products (catalyzed two-part urethane clear, for instance) you can get solvent "popping" on a hot and humid day. Excessive moisture in the air will prevent the solvents from evaporating from the paint normally and the surface will skin quickly due to the high temperature. The solvents remaining in the paint will form billions of little gas bubbles in the paint or clear that at first glance look like you sprayed a metallic. They WILL NOT polish or sand out (sanding will expose them as micro pits in the paint) and the only solution is to strip and refinish the whole thing. The 'wetter' you try to shoot the paint to get a good gloss, the worse the problem will get. I once had to strip a 1:1 Cobra twice and respray it 3 times, finally at 3:00 AM in the cool of the night, to eliminate a hot / humid popping problem.
ERIK88 Posted June 22, 2013 Author Posted June 22, 2013 oh ok, sounds good, oh yea and by far gloss black paint seems to be the most challenging of all ive done so far. (coming back from a 6 yr break when I use to not care as much and build fast lol)
PappyD340 Posted June 23, 2013 Posted June 23, 2013 When doing black, you're prep makes all the difference, if the body work and the base coats are not right black will show every imperfection!!
ERIK88 Posted June 24, 2013 Author Posted June 24, 2013 yea its been a struggle to do gloss black, I have stripped the body for the 2nd time now , hopefully I get it right the 3rd time
