Mooneyzs Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 Dave... Between your header flange and vacuum pump... You have hit it out of the park man. Gorgeous work looking forward to more.
futurattraction Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 I'm speechless. And that rarely happens... LOL
comp1839 Posted March 3, 2014 Author Posted March 3, 2014 jason, thanks! and you're half way around the world from me......many thanks!!! bruce thanks a bunch! henry, you are welcome. i'll post some of those pro nitrous motors w/ a pump. hopefully you'll recognize some of the names. dirk, thanks buddy!! chris, always good to hear from you my friend!! scott, i'll take your word about the speechless part. thanks!! now here's a few examples of nitrous engines w/ vacuum pumps. this is jeff naiser's camaro. burton auxier. can't remember who's motor this is. rickie smith. i'm reasonably sure if you look, you'd be hard pressed to find a nitrous pro mod motor w/ out a vacuum pump. i also couldn't find a MMPS without a pump.
Skypower Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 Those are great pics now who wants to commit to building one like the pic with the valve cover off. Dave how about it you got the skills just need to build one new head for your motor. Now how crazy would that be. Dave that pump looks great, how did you make the valve covers look like they were welded, that kind of detail really brings your motor to life.
comp1839 Posted March 5, 2014 Author Posted March 5, 2014 (edited) thanks henry! thanks bob! the cylinder head idea is pretty cool. it is definitely do-able. i may have to try that some time. i have already made a crankshaft. 4" stroke big block chevy. 1:8 scale. Edited March 5, 2014 by comp1839
comp1839 Posted March 5, 2014 Author Posted March 5, 2014 bob, the welds on the valve covers were accomplished with a special tig weld decal from a company called archer decals.
blackbeard Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 you sure that's a 1:8 crank shaft and not a 1:1 crank shaft that the real thing
Mooneyzs Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 Dave.... I love those pics of engines you posted they all are gorgeous. That crankshaft is a work of art. I would put money down that you could build a working 1/8th scale motor with your machining skills. You are a very talented builder.
comp1839 Posted March 7, 2014 Author Posted March 7, 2014 earl, thanks for the thought! henry, thanks! chris, thank you buddy! the 1/8 scale running engine may not happen BUT, i did start a 1/4 scale version of one of my DRCEII motors. i got started on it and decided that would be a good project to get involved with when i retire. it is really a labor intensive undertaking. so, it's on hold 'til then. scott, thanks!
comp1839 Posted March 8, 2014 Author Posted March 8, 2014 the only update is that i'm workin' on the headers. these will take awhile and will not be easy. the method of construction is the same as building real headers only smaller. it's a process of cutting and mating straights and bends to come up with an appropriate looking piece. also have to construct a collector too.
blackbeard Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 looking forward to seeing how the headers come out
Mizozuman2 Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 I've never built a large scale model car, but seeing all these pictures of yours really gives me an urge to! Great looking kit. Keep the updates coming!
comp1839 Posted March 9, 2014 Author Posted March 9, 2014 thanks henry. i'm working on them as we speak. tucker glad to hear you've been inspired. just as an FYI. this isn't a kit. the body was 3-d printed. the rest is hand made. ray, thanks! much appreciated.
comp1839 Posted March 9, 2014 Author Posted March 9, 2014 started by making a few jigs to hold the tubing in place. one of the jigs replicates the cyl. head for building the headers themselves. i made a second for holding the collector while it is being fitted, epoxied, machined and finally fitted with the collector outlet. i also made a piece to form the collector bends in. i heat the tubing up and place it in the bend and let it cool. that way i get consistent bends to work with. not a finished piece yet but, i think this is probably my best collector to date.
blackbeard Posted March 9, 2014 Posted March 9, 2014 those jigs and the collector are starting to take shape nicely
Prostreet Posted March 9, 2014 Posted March 9, 2014 Great updates Dave, giving me alot of ideas on how to do things once my lathe and mill get here. New room is almost done. will be building again soon.
Mizozuman2 Posted March 9, 2014 Posted March 9, 2014 tucker glad to hear you've been inspired. just as an FYI. this isn't a kit. the body was 3-d printed. the rest is hand made. Oh wow! That's cool! I figured the cage was hand made, but I didn't know the rest of it was 3d printed.
comp1839 Posted March 9, 2014 Author Posted March 9, 2014 tucker, let me bring you up to speed (and any one else who is just joining in) the engine i 100% scratch built from renshape and aluminum. i do all my own machining. i do not own any c.n.c. equipment. this is all done on some very old machinery. block. block and heads braswell 2 bbl. carbs. the bruno unit and the bell housing are hand machined also. while the lenco 2 spd. is 3- printed i still did the technical drawing for the 3-d work to be done.
comp1839 Posted March 9, 2014 Author Posted March 9, 2014 (edited) the rear axle is made from machined brass parts and soldered together. rear brake rotors are hand machined. assembled rear. again the strange carrier is 3-d printed. i supplied the drawings for this to be accomplished. rear shocks.
