keone2013 Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 Here is my USS ESSEX CV-9 carrier that I built. It has a ton of PE parts on it
Wagoneer81 Posted September 28, 2013 Posted September 28, 2013 (edited) I don't know how I missed this one. I love it! I have the Trumpeter kit in the stash and am waiting until I can buy the PE I need to do it justice. I hope mine turns out half as nice as this one! Edited September 28, 2013 by Wagoneer81
keone2013 Posted September 28, 2013 Author Posted September 28, 2013 (edited) Thanks Chris. I built this one for my father in law. He served on it when he was in. I plan on building another one soon. I used Tom's Modelworks PE on this one, but I will use the Pontos Models one for my next one. I would recommend getting the Pontos ones. Its a bit more expensive, but more detailed than Tom's. And I'm going to try and build a better sea base. Edited September 28, 2013 by keone2013

It adds a 'museum' look to the ship.

I'm going to try and build my own when I do the carrier again. I have been doing research on various websites and think I'm going to give it a try. But credit goes to Randall Reynolds. He made it for me. I do know that he used plexi glass. If you PM me your email, I can send you the progress pictures that he took for me as he built the case.
Harry P. Posted September 29, 2013 Posted September 29, 2013 How did you do the water? I assume it's resin, but how did you get the detail of the foam and such done?
Jim B Posted September 29, 2013 Posted September 29, 2013 I just checked out Prontos Models, and they have some nice P/E sets. Too bad they don't have anything in 1/700. Need some good P/E for a CV-14 USS Ticonderoga & a Fletcher-class destroyer.
keone2013 Posted September 29, 2013 Author Posted September 29, 2013 The water is actually Celuclay. I think that's how you spell it. Its basically paper mache. It comes in a powder form that you just add water to and you sculpt it from there. Michels sells it. As far as the foam and sea color, they are just spray paint. Navy Sea Blue and Bahama Sea from Krylon. You just spray the Navy Blue on first and while its still wet, spray the Bahama Sea around the base of the hull. The froth part is just painted white. If you go to youtube and search How to make waterline dioramas, look for videos made by Randall Reynolds. Very cool guy to work with. I worked with him on my past project.
