Nick F40 Posted February 15, 2008 Author Posted February 15, 2008 "Just like to mention that in 2004/5/6? (cannot remember) a metro 6r4 (probably the slowest of the Groub B Cars) came 8th despite going off backwards at 80mph, and set some fastest stage times in Ireland Overal against the WRC cars (at the hands of Colin McRae RIP) just goes to show that a well driven S1/T16/S4 could possibly still win a rally even 20 years later against modern technology." This guy told me this on YouTube.
Nick F40 Posted March 26, 2008 Author Posted March 26, 2008 I bet you never seen a Fiat Abarth do this! I also dug up this video, I thought you might enjoy the sweet sweet sound of this beauty http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c76-GnAOY5c...feature=related and since i'm on a hillclimb mood, the best Dale, you have a PS3?
Nick F40 Posted May 12, 2008 Author Posted May 12, 2008 Group C is amazing Didn't they race an Alfa? GTV6 or something? E30's race at all too?
Guest zebm1 Posted May 14, 2008 Posted May 14, 2008 Hey Dub, have you been out to Wellsboro's Golf and Country Club? The main building (Clubhouse) out there used to be the Matson Family's Homestead..... drive by the Cemetary, you'll find lot's of my ancestors buried there. I didn't know that they did road rallys up there. Next time your out by tha Country Club, belly up to tha bar,ask them about Old Man Baukus, he was my Grandad, tell them that Col. Hank/Mat Matson's son sent you by (not sure which nickname they remember him by). I think my Uncle Bill still lives around there, as do quite a few of my cuzins. Oh yeah, Mt. Tom is named for our 1st ancestor, Thomas Matson.
dub Posted May 14, 2008 Posted May 14, 2008 Can't say I even knew about it before you asked as I don't do much with golf but drive around the car that shares a name with the game. I believe the country club you're talking about is now called Tyoga Country Club. I actually haven't been up there in probably 5 years or more. The race is in the national parks around Wellsboro and the cars only hit town twice between the stages. It is a lot of fun but it involves a lot of travelling. Even once you are there, the cars only pass certain spectator points twice a day and they are usually 8 hours apart. With the price of fuel now(I know, this year's cliche...) and a 4 1/2 hour drive just to get there, its getting to be an expensive vacation. I can say some of my best memories were from the Wellsboro Diner. Great nostalgic stainless steel diner from the 50's. Great food and service and prices are more than fair.
Nick F40 Posted May 14, 2008 Author Posted May 14, 2008 I gots to get up there, that and the Susquehanna rally
Guest zebm1 Posted May 15, 2008 Posted May 15, 2008 (edited) I believe the correct spelling is Tioga, as Wellsboro is in Tioga County, PA. Pine Creek Canyon country......my Dad dipped my heels in that creek when I waz a babe.....Family tradition...... My Great, Great Granddad owned 17,000 acres of virgin timber up there back at tha beginning of tha 20th century, it waz his pay for being a Timber buyer for a logging outfit...for 20 yrs. out west. He was in St. Louis when Geronimo came through, paid a nickel for his signature on the back of his business card....card was donated to tha Smithsonian along with some old firearms...matched Colt 45s /Ivory handles, a Henry octagon long rifle and some other items. Edited May 15, 2008 by zebm1
dub Posted May 15, 2008 Posted May 15, 2008 Yeah, I would have thought that too.... But when I Googled "Wellsboro golf courses" That was the spelling on the website for them. Hmmmmmm..... http://www.golflink.com/golf-courses/cours...p?course=988145 If you check the address, it's definitely the same place you're talking about. I wonder who taught them how to spell????
Guest zebm1 Posted May 15, 2008 Posted May 15, 2008 (edited) Well, they do love their homemade timber likker up there...... fermented turpentine....... Sos the Rally guys will know what kind of terrain is up near Wellsboro.......a coupla pics of Pine Creek Canyon, called the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania --- real pretty country up there....... and a coupla pics of tha cars from tha June rally....... A lota rock in tha ground up there.....bet they had a lot of punctures... Edited May 15, 2008 by zebm1

Mike Posted June 20, 2008 Posted June 20, 2008 Real racing and TRUE FANS! MAN THEY'RE STANDING ON THE TRACK!!!
Nick F40 Posted June 20, 2008 Author Posted June 20, 2008 (edited) Real racing and TRUE FANS! MAN THEY'RE STANDING ON THE TRACK!!! exactly as to why I love rally and that it is the most hardcore and ballsiest motorsport there is even TODAY.. of course since it drew huge crowds, they got out of hand and greatly influenced the banning of Group B along with the deaths very sadly...these were deemed "too fast to race". At a post race inspection, Henri Toivonen's Delta S4 had things sticking out of the splitters and grills, he wondered what they were and found out that they were finger tips, the fans wanted to "touch" the cars as they went by and.........he said "I have never seen anything like that in my whole FIA rally career with my Lancia Delta" that is how hardcore it was.......yeah.... here is a FABULOUS reference on the drivers and pictures, very informative... your comment on the TRUE FANS, you just don't see that anymore.......racing isn't as fun as it was.....it's not like we can't go back to those days and relive em and have fans like that. Yeah, I don't know about that. Yes it has changed and become commerical, big dollars, lots on the line, and very competitive, but did you ever hear any of the drives at Le Mans say that they would rather be doing anything else. I can promise if it wasn't fun it wouldn't be Le Mans, hard work, long hours, yes, but ... well I guess the cultured shocked University team from China wasn't having such a good time... besides have pooh for a car and being homesick they didn't speak any French or much English, but other than that everyone was have a more or less good, except maybe Team Flying Lizards, time and wouldn't trade the experience for anything. But even the Chinese didn't complain that we heard of, okay they didn't speak any English... and had a pooh car. However, long gone are the days of the 962 that dominated everything for a decade. So that's a bummer. Porsche needs a "new" 962! But I am digressing now.
Nick F40 Posted June 21, 2008 Author Posted June 21, 2008 awesome stuff guys! i don't know how i missed this post before, but i had tons of fun wathcing the links! i'm another fan of WRC and rally in general. watching the Starlet video's made me wish i had my former 1:1 project back and hadn't sold it, peer pressure sucks. the group B stuff was the top, the most extreme for sure. did anyone notice the Audi riding a huge wheelie off that bump in the road? glad to know theres more fans of this stuff out there! Dave i actually found myself tensing up watching the BMW reel the other cars in and pass them. the gear whine is crazy in that car for sure, but it was insanely fast too! That whine is just crazy.... you had a Starlet...SWEET....peer pressure blows There is just something about it that I love and even after the high dollar sponsers and all that, the drivers STILL know how to drive and are competitive and has the spririt, only a few deliver that of the WRC standards.... besides rally...LeMans, Touring cars, Sports car racing, etc...... I love the Starlet video showing that almost anything can be rallyed and that car just looks like gobs of fun and looks like it might take some skill. That one video of Group B is what the meaning is of what I've been saying all along, that part where the Quattro lifted off the ground over the jump, that has no words...doing that and keeping it under control is mind blowing, those guys must have trouble sitting. I have one posted up and it shows Walter Rohl driving his Manta and near the end he crested a hill and his car got loose at about 165 kph and he just corrects it and is startled but keeps on going, nowadays, most would crash or probably have a caution. It just shows the brute POWER of the car, it even had all wheel drive and the air still lifting it off the ground, when the front wheel is TRYING to get traction, incredible, well I guess with over 500bhp and no traction or stability control and they didn't have the braking sytem abilities as we do now or the diffs and the biggest thing which race cars, even in todays finest sports car racing, Group B cars didn't have sequential gearboxes, na ahh, FULL STANDARD MANUAL RACING TRANSMISSIONS. To put that into perspective and think about that compared to today, the "technology" and engineering in a way, was a HELL of alot more in those cars. The banning was just a look at what they produced and set the foundation, it is outstanding, To find that nowadys, good luck. Now the WRC cars of today are just as fast and advanced as they were back then so it really hasn't changed too much, although the power was big, the Delta S4 could go 0-60 in 2.4 sec. and the WRX rally car could go 0-60 in 3.8 sec., heck I even heard some did 2.8 sec. still very ###### quick and the specs dropped from the 07 to 08 but to do less than 3 in GRAVEL..........speechless AND they LOOKED LIKE THE ACTUAL PRODUCTION CAR and guess what? THEY STILL DO! Supposedly I read that Walter Rohl said the S1 could reach 322KPH, they tested a WRX rally car with 600BHP and it reached 192MPH. The 2008 WRC Impreza motor cranks out 300 hp, four less than the JDM production car, but 479 lb-ft of torque......168 more than the stock car. THAT'S impressive, and an IMPORT makes TORQUE??? NOOOO!!!! And with that much power, it weighs in at 2711 pounds, nearly 550 less than the WRX STI. So yeah, it MOVES! See you don't need 1,000 to go fast, this thing could SPANK a Supra or Camaro or even an Enzo, and with the right gearing, with speed too, give the Enzo a run for it's money. Still though, you want the BEST?................rally in the 70's.
Nick F40 Posted June 21, 2008 Author Posted June 21, 2008 (edited) Wow, you are very lucky and that guy is very lucky. Nice conversion and wheel choice. You were hanging around with the wrong people, you get the right sites and forums and magazines and hang around the right people, especaially at hillclimbs or SCCA events, look at me! and other guys at this forum, heck I saw a Starlet RUN at a local hillclimb. Tube chassis is cool in a sense but not for that car and NO to the chevy not in there, your original choice was better, well, you don't realize but you made a huge mistake and that was a perfect foundation. Although, a 64 GTO is always nice and I love them so, it's good. The Starlet better have been takin care of and still out there! Edited June 21, 2008 by Nick F40
