Steve D. Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 At the Classic Plastic show a couple of weeks ago , I was talking to Andy Beherens about finishes etc and he told me about this new paint I should check out . Its called High Performance METAL SPECKS Metallic Paint in the DUPLICOLOR line . First let me start by saying that this is a HOT automotive lacquer and must be treated as such . I first applied a coat of Tamiya primer then rubbed it out with red compound from Dupont . Followed by a light coat of BIN sealer which was also rubbed out . BIN sealer states that you can paint over it in 30 minutes , just to be safe I waited an hour . I applied 4 misted on coats , waiting appx 15 minutes between coats . The final coat being applied as a wet coat resulting in a glossy finish . The pigment in this paint is ground so fine it actually looks to be in scale in 1/25 ! I can't belive how beautiful this stuff is . I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS PAINT TO ALL WHO USE AUTOMOTIVE PAINTS !!!!!!!! So far I have only used the RED , it also comes in Green , Blue and I belive Silver or Black . One thing I did notice was a price difference of over three dollars from one Auto parts store to the next , one was 6.99 the other was 9.99. I realize that 6.99 is not exactly cheap , it is a full size can of spray paint . Lots of guys(and gals) will want to decant it , and use thier air brush , but a showroom finish can be had straight from the can . I just finished a 49 Merc with the red followed by a couple of coats of clear CAN YOU SAY RUBY SLIPPERS !!!!!! yikes . I'll be experimenting with this stuff in the future and I'll keep you posted Take care and see you around the clubhouse , Steve D. P.S. THANKS ANDY !!!!!
novadose71 Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 Cool. Thanks for letting us know.I'll be looking for these this weekend.
Smart-Resins Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 I remember seeing the blue and thinking that would maybe look nice with white like with the clear effex that I have used with the white. However I do not use a airbrush yet and thought that the blue might need to be mixed with a clear maybe like a 5 to 1 ratio or so that it would not be overbearing. perhaps you can tell me how translucent it might be?? Would it work well over another color as a effex style or will it be over powring and needs to be sprayed over a like color.I know I do like the effex that I used. However it can not be sprayed over chrome as it turns it grey!! Thanks.

Waited a day and then dusted on 4 coats with the 4th being a "wet" coat . Well the paint alligatored a little but I none the less applied a couple of coats of Mr Hobby Super Clear , Hit it with a polishing kit , layed on 2 more coats of clear and now its as smooth as glass . By spraying over gray instead of white the finished color is a little deeper and riched. This paint shows a lot of potential for undercoating with different colored primers , stay tuned as I will conducting further experiments...said the Maaaaad doctor . Take care and see you around the clubhouse , P.S. Sprayed right out of the can Steve D. Edited November 15, 2007 by Steve D.
