jaydar Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 (edited) I woukd like to build a reasonably axcurate 71 or 72 Road Runner in 1/25. Thanks, Joe. Edited October 28, 2013 by jaydar
1972coronet Posted October 29, 2013 Posted October 29, 2013 There are two choices for a 1971 , but only one option for a 1972 , if you're seeking to build an out-of-box kit : 1971 : MPC produced an 'Annual' of the Road Runner in 1971 . It was reissued in 1987 as a "modified-reissue" (truly , only the custom version's wheels changed ; and , I suppose that *technically* the tyres were different ). These kits , in both original and 1987 issue , fetch a princely sum . Another contender in the 1971 R.R. forum was the early 80's and was made by Monogram . But , there's a *catch* , it's not ~technically~ a Road Runner (!) It's labelled as a 1971 Plymouth Satellite , but its strobe strip and hood are definitely Road Runner items . It builds-up okay ; however , its air cleaner is a non-stock open element model , and its intake manifold is representative of an Edelbrock-esque model . 1972 : Again , MPC produced an 'Annual' for the 1972 model year . The original 1971 tooling was modified to represent a 1972 model ; otherwise , it is identical to its 1971 predecessor . This was issued only in 1972 , and never again . These fetch quite the pretty penny ! I'm still waiting for someone to make a conversion kit for the Monogram 1971 Satellite / GTX , to make it a 1972 model (new rear bumper , tail light lenses , front grille and side marker lamps) .
jaydar Posted October 29, 2013 Author Posted October 29, 2013 Wow, i did not know such a great car would be this overlooked. Does the the 1/24 Monogram 71 GTX come with a standard hood or just the powergrabber? Thanks for the response, Joe.
mikelo Posted October 29, 2013 Posted October 29, 2013 That kit has always come with the air grabber hood as fa as I am aware of. Mike

I'm working on those bumper sets right now, as a matter of fact I'm making preliminary molds tonight. They will be available in both street and NASCAR versions. The MPC Petty Roadrunner was a 1971, but had the 1972 rear bumper. My issue is not converting a bumper for the Revell kit, but the tail lights themselves. Those are going to be a doozy-to-do! Keep in touch with me John. With so many projects going at once I can use the occaisional reminder to get on the stick!
1972coronet Posted October 30, 2013 Posted October 30, 2013 . Does the the 1/24 Monogram 71 GTX come with a standard hood or just the powergrabber? The c.1984 issue of the "1971 Satellite" ( moulded in black ) has the standard Road Runner hood (i.e. , simulated hood vents , with engine displacement callouts) ; The c.1995 "modified-reissue" 1971 GTX (moulded in yellow ; subsequent issues --including the current issue , are moulded in white ) has the "Air Grabber" (Plymouth's nomenclature for Dodge's "Ramcharger") hood , in addition to the GTX's rocker panel moulding and the X's tail spoiler . The Air Grabber was standard only when the ($900) Hemi was ordered , and was optional with the (base) 383 , 340 , 440-4 (a GTX-only engine) and 440 Six Barrel ( colloquially , "Six Pack" , which was Dodge's nomenclature) . And , if it matters , air conditioning was not available with the Air Grabber .
Nxr Posted November 6, 2013 Posted November 6, 2013 (edited) a 383 72 roadrunner is one great car and can be obtained rather cheaply, sometimes around 8000$ even, much less than their 68-70 models and honestly, in a way looks way cooler. Edited November 6, 2013 by Nxr
KevinMoparFord Posted November 7, 2013 Posted November 7, 2013 There is a resin 72, forget who did it and they have been starting to pop up on Ebay again. I got this for a reasonable price, I think with shipping around $25. Pretty nice casting, need to have bumpers plated, Alclad or paint to match body.

High octane Posted November 7, 2013 Posted November 7, 2013 a 383 72 roadrunner is one great car and can be obtained rather cheaply, sometimes around 8000$ even, much less than their 68-70 models and honestly, in a way looks way cooler. I don't see any '72 Road Runners at car shows or cruise nights. Not even at Mopar shows, and that's because nobody wants them. Even '68-'70 Road Runners are scarce and not only do they look the best, they were in the "highlight of the muscle car era.

You don't see any? What kinda car shows are you going to? Nobody wants them? WHAT?!!! This is from the Lake Erie Tri-State Mopar Club's annual show in Albion Pennsylvania. I just took a quick glance at my album and found 3 right off the top. Edited November 7, 2013 by Randytheroadrunner
1972coronet Posted November 8, 2013 Posted November 8, 2013 I've always loved the 1971-1972 Plymouth B-bodies (the '73-'74 are nice , too ...) . The rarest of the 1972 models ? The 440 Six Barrel !
