Eshaver Posted November 16, 2013 Posted November 16, 2013 Richard, concentrate on the roof shingles now . The rest of the building is great as it is . Let me know if you need more Texaco stuff. I only sent you the very early signs up to about 1932. I have a lot more into the 60's and 70's .
crazyrichard Posted November 17, 2013 Author Posted November 17, 2013 will do ed thnx and whell not sure yet , i already had found some usefull logos from texaco ... still need to figure out where and how i will put and make the signs but like you said i'd better go do the roof now
crazyrichard Posted November 17, 2013 Author Posted November 17, 2013 started on the roof today , used 600 grid sandpaper and cut shingles out of that .. while gluing them on the sat tight against the roof , while drying they curled like you see on the picture .. i was like hmmzz but i cant keep them sitting flat it doesnt look real bad though ...
Tom Geiger Posted November 17, 2013 Posted November 17, 2013 The roof shingles look great. The curling and such are exactly the way these dry out and start breaking. I would add some flat black around the chimney, and drip it down a little. That would have been sealed with black tar, and a bad repair or two would make it look real.
crazyrichard Posted November 17, 2013 Author Posted November 17, 2013 (edited) thnx and yes i was planning of doint some black lines in certain earea's when the roof is done , maybe some birddroppings also haha btw the foor already looks better , i flattened it a bit , still a bit curled .. and went over the shingles with a nother piece of sandpaper (sandpaper on sandpaper so to speak) that gave a cool effect , became a tad lighter so they are now grey with black also covered the top and sides of the red sign with sandpaper looks so much better will make some pics later Edited November 17, 2013 by crazyrichard
crazyrichard Posted November 17, 2013 Author Posted November 17, 2013 whell when the glue dryed the shingles leveled out more and got less curl , just finished the left side of the front roof , right side i hope to get done tomorrow , its a lot of work (read takes a lot of time) also made a wooden center piece in the front of the front roof and a wooden clapboard on the left side dont mind the red on the signholder that will be gone when i have a cool sign there , that red looks horrible
Dinky Posted November 17, 2013 Posted November 17, 2013 Wow, wow, wow, this is really awesome. Its getting better and better :-)
crazyrichard Posted November 18, 2013 Author Posted November 18, 2013 thnx arno , whell not even half way and some things will get some more work .. i have so many cool ideas whell today i got home and the shingles where sitting dead flat , so anybody who wants to use sandpaper for shingles with regulair glue if the curl just waight till the next day and they sit dead flat .. now i took a steel pin and bend some shingle up again , way better now some sit flat and some are curled .. nice contrast .. also the sanding with sandpaper made them look way more interesting only need to do the right side of the roof now .. and then start on some rain gutters along the bottom of the roof .. make drain pipes ... the result of today , just curled some up by hand a 3 way bracket with rods for the chimney
crazyrichard Posted November 18, 2013 Author Posted November 18, 2013 (edited) the roof is done last shingles went on tonight ! also did some tar around the shimney and tar in the corners where the front and rear roof meet , also some mild tar on the signholder .. finished the rood edge on the right and made some wooden roofedges on the sides (clapboards ??_ now i need to put a killer sign on the roof and add some brackets with some old looking spotlights that pint on the sign ... first i want to make raingutters along the bottom of the roof now .. on the wooden centerpiece on the front center of the front roof i added a small flag pole , i want to put a round cap on it , some lines and add a hanging flag (like there is no wind) oh and check the mild bird droppings lol Edited November 18, 2013 by crazyrichard
crazyrichard Posted November 19, 2013 Author Posted November 19, 2013 whell did some washes and tied in everything some more .. weathered the pumps so they look dirty and older , choose not to use rust or grease made ribbed sides on the building to hide the screws that hold on the roof and also added one on the sign holder then washed everything with brown and also washed the woodwork a tiny bit
crazyrichard Posted November 19, 2013 Author Posted November 19, 2013 because i only made the facefront of the building i had natural light coming from "inside" so i desided to close it with wood and make it look like it could open , its a display window , later i can add oil cans etc in the window rough base from left over pieces of wood sitting behind there , nice extra detail also then washed the woord , the higher beams are lighter and woth a tad of sanding i got a cool effect on this picture the wood wash really shows .. and .. i looked at this and went , whow i will make some wooden fencing there , not only does that look awsome and add more detail it also acts as a block when i photograph a car in there bonus decolored haha
crazyrichard Posted November 20, 2013 Author Posted November 20, 2013 today i added a gauge with some glass on the airpump , also did some random decals on the window of the door , not on a picture yet
crazyrichard Posted November 22, 2013 Author Posted November 22, 2013 made a test version of a old vending machine a few minutes ago , i need to look on the net what i will make (sort of).. so this was a nice testversion made from scraps .. i also want to make a old coca cola vending machine ... put it in for some inspiration also added some random decals on the door , i will put more on later on , need to make a nice doorknob on the door with lockplate tested some silver plate with glass in front
Dinky Posted November 22, 2013 Posted November 22, 2013 Wow very nice, its getting better every time.
crazyrichard Posted November 23, 2013 Author Posted November 23, 2013 i made a movie of my garage dio and this service station , service station is also in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IARRIYfvHeg
Ramfins59 Posted November 23, 2013 Posted November 23, 2013 Richard, I have been following along as you have been building these dioramas and they are absolutely awesome. Your attention to detail is wonderful. Re the movie that you made...... I don't know what I like better, the movie, or the accompanying Blues music... That harp player was GREAT...!!! I have been a fan and player of the Blues for many years (I play Bass). Thanks for such an entertaining post here.

I have been a fan and player of the Blues for many years (I play Bass). Thanks for such an entertaining post here. thnx thnx , sadly the cam on my phone i used is lousy so the movie doent really shows the details real good , i have to get like a small nice hd cam some day , those things are not expensive at all so .. and yes i love bluess .. not a super expert because i never been a guy to tie myself to pesific artists or music genres .. i do love bluess .. the funny thing is i wanted to put some bluess in and i tried to play some on my pc while filming .. that was no succes so i decided to film it outside , better lighting and only birds to hear .. but when i uploaded it to youtube i could edit the movie there and add music , so i typed in bluess , listened to a few in the list and found this song , loved the sound and so added it but again i'm a big bluess fan , i also like a bit of jazz and hmm reggae , r&b , hiphop is also something i'm really crazy about .. in general if i would make a list of music i like it would be a weird one because a lot of people like a certain genre and only stick with that my likings are real broad .... here is a nother video , also lousy qualiy but ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z_UH-yXAOsw Edited November 23, 2013 by crazyrichard
crazyrichard Posted November 23, 2013 Author Posted November 23, 2013 redid the front today , painted the wood white and downtoned it , then added a wash , now the diference is now the boards are weathered at the edge insted of in the seems .. then put everything in a coat of matt varnish , everything exept the roof .. all is now sealed annd it brought everything a tad more to live the airvent in the window , want to make that more realistic and add real lamels , also with some glasswork it will look better
southpier Posted November 23, 2013 Posted November 23, 2013 don't forget the bell and hose for the pump jockey! looks great

crazyrichard Posted November 24, 2013 Author Posted November 24, 2013 (edited) thnx guys !! and they you mean like a hose running over the ground so when a car drives over a bell rings ? i was planning of doing that indeed yesterday i decided to make the airvent in the window more realistic , because it was hard to work on at this point i decided to use real steel mesh to spice it up Edited November 24, 2013 by crazyrichard
southpier Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 yes. how else would the attendant know to clean your windshield, check the oil, and put air in your tires?
crazyrichard Posted November 24, 2013 Author Posted November 24, 2013 yes lol found an old lego sign and cut most off untill i got this left , put a styrene plate under it with some pins for bolts after some chrome and a rust wash it came out like this , also did some bolts on the roof sign o the bottom left i cant get the window to sit right there is a small gap , so i'm thinking of putting some boards in front like the glass was broken there
