tubbs Posted November 5, 2013 Posted November 5, 2013 ok, I had this in the question and answer section, but I don't think it hit the right people so I am trying it here... as modeling time gets less and less around my house and maybe I am tackling too big of a project here, but I would like to know what it would take to upgrade the pro sportsman chassis to a legal chassis of todays cars. pictures and web sites are a plus. I enjoy tackling scratch built ones, but they are way too time consuming (and most of the time not too accurate and just plain wrong.) thanks in advance for any help. my apologies if this has been covered, I looked for it with no success.
ScaleDale Posted November 5, 2013 Posted November 5, 2013 I'm only fairly familiar with NHRA, but what class do you want to shoot for? I can get you the current rule sections for Pro Mod and Top Sportsman. I think cars like the Pro Sportsman Chevys on the market would fit in these categories. Maybe Super Gas or Econo Altered, too. I'll do more reading today. Dale
Mike Kucaba Posted November 5, 2013 Posted November 5, 2013 How about looking at chassis company's catalogs? Alston comes to my mind and there maybe others?
FAST442 Posted November 5, 2013 Posted November 5, 2013 I would order an SFI booklet for a 25.1 or 25.4 spec. That's what the real chassis builders have to abide by, very detailed.
ScaleDale Posted November 5, 2013 Posted November 5, 2013 I'm doing what Todd suggested to make sure I don't miss anything with my 1:1 Super Stock Mustang. $38 well spent even though it's not required for the ETs my car will run. Dale
tubbs Posted November 5, 2013 Author Posted November 5, 2013 first, let me state, I know very little about these class rules, so..... i'd think I would be leaning towards the top sportsman class. I think pro mod is getting too crazy with the bodies (moving in the same direction that funny cars did, almost unrecognizable bodies). want to keep the body mods to a minimum if possible. some sectioning and cutting in OK. the builds I am trying to do are a willys, (I used the old summit pro stock chassis and want to update) ... and a '99 ford lightning truck with twin turbos. (not far enough along to show the picts on this one). I was never really too concerned on getting them 100% accurate, but I figure if I am going to take the time to do them, I might as well get them close. mike - I have looked at Alston, skinny kid (I like that one) and a few others and it just looks like a lot of tubing to me. fast442 - I have no idea what a SFI booklet is? (I hear you laughing!! it's all good, I just watched a lot of drag racing and never really paid attention to the classes in depth) scaleDale - it would be wonderfull if you can PM or post up the rules to which my willys and lightning will fit.
tubbs Posted November 5, 2013 Author Posted November 5, 2013 hmmm, after my last post, I googled some SFI stuff and am coming up with some good stuff. thanks, will appreciate any other help.
tooltas Posted November 5, 2013 Posted November 5, 2013 go to YELLOW BULLIT com and they got ton of promods an prostreet racer,
ScaleDale Posted November 5, 2013 Posted November 5, 2013 Here's a pair of Top Sportsman cars from the Lucas Oil regional race here at Pacific Raceway last summer. Nice open class for a build. NHRA T/S rule section 2013 NHRA Top Sportsman 2013.pdf Dale
FAST442 Posted November 6, 2013 Posted November 6, 2013 I've used the SFI booklets on a couple real cars that I've done for customers and on my own car, all passed the inspector and have been tagged. It's really the only way to build a safe car, or an accurate one in scale!

tubbs Posted November 6, 2013 Author Posted November 6, 2013 SFI + NHRA beats Yellow Bullet anyday. Rules > Rumors Dale I have a ruff time getting past the girlie posts when I go to Yellow Bullet...... just sayin.... thanks for all your help guys, keep it coming. thanks for the PDF Dale.
FAST442 Posted November 6, 2013 Posted November 6, 2013 Google " SFI chassis specs " it should come up. Yellowbullet is full of keyboard tuff guys!! And engineers!
ScaleDale Posted November 6, 2013 Posted November 6, 2013 Where can this SFI be found? http://www.sfifoundation.com Dale
Prostreet Posted November 6, 2013 Posted November 6, 2013 (edited) Google " SFI chassis specs " it should come up. Yellowbullet is full of keyboard tuff guys!! And engineers! Isn't that on every forum, even this one? not standing up for yellowbullet , just sayin. Your building in 1/25th, you won't get every last little bar in the car to make it 100% accurate, you would never be able to get to the interior area to build. Even on my 1/16th promod i didn't have every bar, most people would not even know certain bars are missing when they seen it, even on this forum. Goggle promod chassis , there are tons of good reference pictures. I'm sure you will get it figured out. post some updates. Edited November 6, 2013 by Prostreet

I do have tons of reference shots and some specs I can work off of. I guess I just keep looking instead of building. I will start a thread for these in the upcoming weeks. not going to be anything like you see here so don't get too excited. thanks for everyone's help.
Prostreet Posted November 8, 2013 Posted November 8, 2013 I'm with you on the looking part, that's why my last build was over a year and a half long and still not done, I'm just saying if it's not 100% accurate don't sweat it and make yourself crazy over it, that's what I did and had to take breaks and go back to it.
