Jairus Posted November 24, 2007 Posted November 24, 2007 Artists use "Fixatif" by Krylon. Basically hair spray without the perfume.
dub Posted November 24, 2007 Author Posted November 24, 2007 (edited) Well, even after all that progress, I still managed to get more done last night. Lack of exhaust was bugging me so I had to do something about it. The look I wanted, was the zoomies to look like a pair of old drag headers from a rod with the collector pipe cut off and the whole shebang header coated. As you can see, they were also quite easy to make. Hey, they nailed the effect I wanted; whatever works! Here's a few more pics.... I need to shoot some interior pieces and finish assembling the engine next. Then I can play with the new pastel set I picked up! Til the next round! Edited November 25, 2007 by dub
dub Posted November 24, 2007 Author Posted November 24, 2007 Don't try to put any type of clear paint over pastels. You will lose all your hard work. It just disappears. I like to dullcote before application. Gives the chalk something to bite into. There is a product to "set" pastels that artists use on canvas, but I've never tried it on a model. Sharp looking tub by the way. Thanks James! That's funny advice about the dullcote when compared to what a military modeller I bumped into at A.C. Moore tonight told me. He said If I dullcote over top of pastels that you must apply them heavier to begin with because it tones the colors down. It almost sounds right because when Virgil built Frankie, the colors changed on him too. I will go with your method, though, because I can see your scenario happening to me! It sounds like that stuff you and Jairus mention will work. I don't know if I will spend the dough on it now. Maybe after the holidays....
dub Posted November 25, 2007 Author Posted November 25, 2007 Got a another update..... I went for the interior this round of building. I wanted to use the buckets in the kit but they didn't fit in between the frame rails and the torque tube. I decided to just use the front bench like Kyle. That, of course, needed some finesse to fit as well. I finally decided on the color too. I was already leaning in this direction, but wasn't sure. V's suggestion helped push me the whole way over. It was a bonus that I already had the paint! It almost looks too classy.... just wait! I also did some minor detailing on the mill. I drybrushed the silver on the valve covers and finished the headers. It sure is starting to take on it's own personality now! The windshield frame is the stock one chopped waaay down and the "glass" is clear acetate. My list of to do's is shrinking everyday. What's left is still fun stuff! I am looking forward to it.
Dr. Cranky Posted November 25, 2007 Posted November 25, 2007 Man, I'm really enjoying all the progress you are making . . . remember the trick to good weathering is not to overdo it . . . I think you are doing great . . . wonderful to watch you go!!!
dub Posted November 26, 2007 Author Posted November 26, 2007 I did a little bit more today. Decided to take all the gauges and the bezel out. .... and I finally finished the grille and radiator: Now for the black wash on the engine...... I have not done it before and I'm worried about the wrong mix of thinner and paint that will take the paint off below. I experimented on the Focus I finished a little bit ago, and it started to take the clear off. I do not want to screw my work up, so what did I do wrong? I am still finishing the controls in the interior, but I won't attempt to do the wash until tomorrow night.
Dr. Cranky Posted November 26, 2007 Posted November 26, 2007 The coolness factor is high with this one . . . you are really making great progress . . . it's going to stand out . . . for sure. Great stuff, keep it going!
MikeMc Posted November 27, 2007 Posted November 27, 2007 (edited) totally kool.......but the headers just wont work for me.....far too loud for cruisin the fairgrounds..run a tube front to back with a capped flange. and drop a tube down use tamiya acrylics thinned with water for your washes Edited November 27, 2007 by MikeMc
dub Posted November 27, 2007 Author Posted November 27, 2007 totally kool.......but the headers just wont work for me.....far too loud for cruisin the fairgrounds..run a tube front to back with a capped flange. and drop a tube down use tamiya acrylics thinned with water for your washes Yah, if it were 1:1 and it was mine, I would be right there with ya! It occurred to me when I was making the headers about the noise. Well, that's what earplugs are for! I did some research on the wash last night and that's about what I found out. I do have some mild paint thinner I could use, but I like the water idea more. Water won't lift paint that isn't water based! Thanks for the comments! I should have one more update before it goes Under Glass.
Nick F40 Posted November 27, 2007 Posted November 27, 2007 Oh, that just makes it even better, I get all excited when I hear open headers or a loud V8 or a loud engine for that matter! good job on everything, like I said, your giving me tips. I can't wait to see it, hopefully I'll be able to get my recent project done soon.
Frank Posted November 28, 2007 Posted November 28, 2007 Hey dub, this one cool build. I reckon channelled phaetons look great.
dub Posted November 28, 2007 Author Posted November 28, 2007 Here's my last installment on the build. I tried the black wash with Tamiya acrylic watered down. I'd say that was pretty easy. It looks much better. I need to work on my technique a little but I think my first crack at it was a decent one. I also did the whole assembly; engine and trans. (well you're supposed to, right? ) You can kinda see the interior got a mild shot of it too, in two of these pics. I gotta hang some lights, a shifter and a few other odds and ends and I'm callin' it done! Thanks again, everybody for all the comments and help offered along the way. I know it was a learning experience for more than just me.
