brandolsx Posted November 22, 2013 Posted November 22, 2013 (edited) Hey everyone, I am working on making a model replica of the car I own. I am a bit new to modeling still and learning a lot. The problem with my car is that there is grey/silver decals on the car. When I use printer decal paper there are two problems. Grey/Silver won't be printed because the printer uses black to make grey, so the decal is basically a clear black and is barley visible. Also there are multiple lines to the "IROC-Z" logo, so when I cut a decal out around the edges you get a raised square. I'm not as worried about the raised square as getting the color to work. When putting a clear over the decals I might be able to buff out the decal lip. I am wondering if there is anybody out there that may have some insight on where or who to go to, to get some help. I have seen some pretty good custom decals on this forum. Details: The IROC-Z decal size (At 1/24 scale) comes out to be 1" wide by .15" tall. The grey and black strip which is to be across the bottom is about 4 strips .07" tall. I also have a corvette grand sport fender decal on my car. Alternating Black and Silver to follow the theme of the car. My Car: What I have so far: As you can see it is very hard to see the IROC-Z Logo and the black/silver stripes on the bottom. I am not happy with it. Closer up to the Black/Silver Stripes: Close up to the "IROC-Z" decal, almost invisible: Edited November 22, 2013 by brandolsx
brandolsx Posted November 22, 2013 Author Posted November 22, 2013 (edited) Here is a set of decals to give you a better example of what is supposed to be here. Obviously not all the decals and not gold. It is a very sliver looking color on the grand sport and door stripes. The IROC-Z logo is more of a grey. Edited November 22, 2013 by brandolsx
Erik Smith Posted November 22, 2013 Posted November 22, 2013 Unless you print on white decal film, there is no way to get gray - or any variations of white (unless you apply to decal to a white base). So…your options are to use an Alps printer or find somebody to make them for you. There are a couple guys on the forum that have Apls printers (that print white), Chief Jospeh from Fireball Modelworks is one... As to the raised square - are you using a setting solvent? Like micro set or micro sol? Those products will melt more of the decal film and reduce the "edge" effect.

Thanks for the help Erik, Yeah I did use Micro set on this one, but for some reason it was really raised. I took them off now. I have an email into a company that has an alps printer. Hopefully they will get back to me. Hopefully someone will chime in on here that has one and would be willing to give me a hand.
Chief Joseph Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 Brandon, I've been working on a 1/24 IROC-Z conversion for the recently re-released 1985 Z28 and I've designed a set of decals for it: These are the draft version of the red decals, but the silver would look the same, only they'd be... silver.

These would be perfect!! Would you be interested in making me a set or two (For Back-up)? I will be willing to get you some money for them of course. Please let me know! Thanks These are the draft version of the red decals, but the silver would look the same, only they'd be... silver.
brandolsx Posted December 28, 2013 Author Posted December 28, 2013 Anyone else able to help me out here? Looks like Joseph got busy and won't be making me these. Anyone else!?
lordairgtar Posted December 29, 2013 Posted December 29, 2013 I have seen where someone has some very thin vinyl in almost any color. You could replicate your Grand Sport stripes with that. I'd call around to folks who do wraps on real cars and ask for scrap that they may have. You would then have to cut it yourself with a sharp X-acto knife. I've seen this done on a model car of a Trans Am Bandit replica and it was quite convincing.
