Mike Posted November 22, 2007 Posted November 22, 2007 (edited) To give a bit of background, I was talking to my dad the other day about buying a train set for the kids for Christmas. He told me my old train set was in the garage. He'd gotten it from my grandma's when she passed away a couple years ago. So, he calls and tells me he's got the box and there's models etc. in there from when I was a kid! I was about 8 when they were built, and by the color schemes, I was obviously a product of the late 70's/early 80's. I picked up the box yesterday and this is what I found - Best of all............... THE VERY FIRST MODEL I EVER BUILT AS A KID!!! Actually, I was 6 and my uncle allowed me to help him with it. But it got me started! Edited November 22, 2007 by Mike
crispy Posted November 22, 2007 Posted November 22, 2007 Mike, That is awesome! I got a box similar to that from my parents a few years ago. Mainly it was left over parts from past builds, but it was fun and exciting all the same. Looks like you have some real nice restorations to follow! Chris
bigphoto Posted November 22, 2007 Posted November 22, 2007 That is awesome I wish mine had been saved, but I still have my Lionel train set that I got in 1970 it had been my uncle's in the late 50's!
novadose71 Posted November 22, 2007 Posted November 22, 2007 WOW. It's cool finding old stuff like that from your past. I have a few that my Grandpa built when I was a kid, In a way, they're some of the favorites on my shelf, even if they're not that nice. And I see your parents allowed you to build two beer sponsored models as a child. shame shame So, I am assuming they have driven you to a life of raging alcoholism. Repeat after me "My name is (state your name)......and I am a (state your vice)aholic.............
dub Posted November 22, 2007 Posted November 22, 2007 AWESOME!!! That kind of attic treasure is always the best! I still have all of my and my brother's HO train layout. I just don't have anywhere to build a decent sized setup. I have waaaayyy more HO stuff than 1:25 laying around....... Funny, I actually have more room for larger scale than smaller!!! Anyway, Glad you're going to have a fun day down memory lane, thanks for sharing.
62rebel Posted November 27, 2007 Posted November 27, 2007 i'm going into retrograde... i've been doing 1/25 for so long, and the other day my wife spots OF ALL THINGS repops of the classic GI Joe with kung fu grip..... now i have the same toys i did when i was twelve. i WISH i had a TENTH of the gear i had when i was twelve! and MODELS? here's a story for ya; on my second tour in the Navy a shipmate brings me a HUGE cardboard box of assorted old models he and his brothers had abused over the years. picking through it, i find several old promos, old Johan kits, oddball bits and pieces of about fifty kits i have no idea what were. "here" he says; "thought you might get a kick out of this junk." some of that stuff is still in my parts boxes today, 20 years later!
Robert81 Posted November 27, 2007 Posted November 27, 2007 I love old build ups. It's a great way to get a peek at the way thing where done in the past. Back when I still lived with my parents, I used to sneak into the basement and look at all my dad's old kits and builds from the 70's.
ABC Auto Industry Posted November 27, 2007 Posted November 27, 2007 Whoa! Those vehicles are cool! I actually got my first model sometime before I was 10 (I think), but it was a snap-together model. It was a Lamborghini Diablo VT convertible (don't know the manufacturer).
djway3474 Posted November 27, 2007 Posted November 27, 2007 If I had all my first builds I could have saved myself a literal fortune. I seem to be uncontrollable when it comes to replacing kits from my youth. I still have my old AFX HO slot cars which is amazing if you knew how many times I have moved in my life. Ah Memories LOL Dwayne
Enzoenvy1 Posted November 27, 2007 Posted November 27, 2007 Wow, that even got me a little choked up, lol. I rummaged through my rents house the other mmonth and found all of my old toys. I now have my original Transformers back! All these kids today don't even know what the real Transformers were like, just the new movie. Sorry to go off on a tangent. Are you gonna restore any of those? I would tackle that red Fox body, lol. that thing is crazy weird looking. But as a kid, that thing was probably tops for you. Thanks for sharing.
ismaelg Posted November 28, 2007 Posted November 28, 2007 WOW! Those are so cool to look at! Even if not mine, they bring a lot of memories! Especially that Chevy Bison truck. Somewhere, I must still have parts left from the one I built. Would you be interested if I find them? Thanks,

Thanks for sharing. Congrats and tell me about it !!! I LOVE the original Transformers. I was a big GI Joe nut as a kid, and had things you mailed away your points for that weren't available in stores. Lost them all in a flood 10 years ago. I do plan on restoring that Datsun 4x4 for sure. The other's I haven't even thought about yet. LOL

I still have all of my planes and even the elusive "Snake eyes" original. Dman I miss being a kid.
scubadiver411 Posted November 29, 2007 Posted November 29, 2007 WOW, those look like they would be alot of fun to "re-do". About 7 years ago, my parents brought over a box of my old models and said "Here, you have your own house now, you can store them here". Well, after opening them up, cleaning off the dust, I entered some of them in a model contest to see how I would do.... 1st and 3rd. That's what got me back into modeling after about 15 years of being out of it. I'm so glad that my parents had kept some of my old stuff Just the other week they brought a box of "Old LOVE letters" from when I was in HS. My wife got a kick out of reading some of those Anyway, I hope you have fun with your new find and keep on building... STEVE ALLEN
