Raul_Perez Posted December 7, 2007 Posted December 7, 2007 (edited) After looking at these pics you'll quickly realize that I didn't build this one "old-school" style. Here are a few pictures of the Revell 49 Merc that I'm building in a Semi-Pro-Touring theme. Most of the "extra" parts are from an AMT 1997 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra: Engine, tranny, headers, upper suspension cross-bar, radiator fan and overflow bottle assembly, relocated battery, full interior, mirrors and wheels. I'd have to call this one only "semi-Pro-Touring" because I didn't install the suspension from the SVT Cobra. The stock stuff just fit too well as it was to mess with it. The master brake cylinder is from the Revell 32 Ford 3 window coupe. The tires came out of the parts box. The body mods are pretty simple: front roll pan from the AMT 49 Merc, filled bumper mounting holes front & rear and a mild reshaping of the rear pan under the taillights. When I get time this weekend I'll polish the Testor's lacquer Plum Crazy paint, add the BMF, windows, taillight lenses... I'm pretty sure that I'm going to go with the Buick grill, but I really like the Pontiac one as well. I'll also try to use a bit better lighting for photographing the finished model. bobss396 Posted December 7, 2007 Posted December 7, 2007 Wow, the '49 Merc kit has been released? Only kidding, yours is very different. The under-hood detail is great, I like the new home for the battery as well. Bob
RatRod Posted December 7, 2007 Posted December 7, 2007 Now there's a lot of nice work!!! Looks more like a luxury tourer than a pro touring, but whatever you call it, I call it awesome!!!
Gray Smith Posted December 7, 2007 Posted December 7, 2007 Sweet! someone finally did a pro-touring build.....great color and great integration of Mustang parts... I've been thinking of a pro-tour build of one of these..guess I have to now.. Excellent build man Gray
Raul_Perez Posted December 8, 2007 Author Posted December 8, 2007 (edited) OK, I think that I figured out how to insert pictures that you don't have to click on to see the full sized image... So, here are a couple more pics of the engine detail. I finally painted the Cobra logo on the intake manifold to match the body color (Plum Crazy) and finished a few other small details that I needed to get to... Here you can see the idler arm that I added to the steering linkage. It's mounted to the frame, just below the red starter cable in the picture. This is the only part that Revell didn't include in the kit that they probably should have, since they did add the pitman arm... Once I finish the interior details I'll add those pics as well...(if this works right...) Edited December 8, 2007 by Raul_Perez
chris coffey Posted December 8, 2007 Posted December 8, 2007 MAN Raul!!! that is reeeeeeeeaaaaaly a sweet build!!! making me want to head to the closet to see if i got one of them Mustang donor kits just to see what i can concoct. oh wait... need to finish up 4 current projects before i start another one!! DANG IT!!!
Raul_Perez Posted December 8, 2007 Author Posted December 8, 2007 making me want to head to the closet to see if i got one of them Mustang donor kits just to see what i can concoct. I know what you mean!!! I've already built a similar car using an AMT 49 Ford coupe. Same engine, interior, wheels... The engine is way too cool to build and the interior fits well into many small coupes.
chris coffey Posted December 10, 2007 Posted December 10, 2007 another good Mustang donor kit is the Revell "super stallion" kit!! i have had atleast 5 of them kits, but NEVER got to pilfer any parts out of it before friends were hounding me to trade it!!

Thanks for the tip, Chris!! I'll keep an eye out for the kit on eBay and at the swap meets!!
chris coffey Posted December 10, 2007 Posted December 10, 2007 that super stallion kit has a twin turbo charged V-8 in it that would be the cats meow in an old car!!

Chris, Check out the pictures at the link below: http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v390/Dak...0Ford%20Custom/ This link was in a response from Mike Newport when he told me about the Super Stallion kit after seeing my 49 Ford SVT Cobra posted in the "Under Glass" section. dub Posted December 12, 2007 Posted December 12, 2007 I've been meaning to comment on this one for a bit now.... Just haven't had my thoughts collected. I love the seamless integration you pulled off here. Everything looks super. The only thing I would change were it my build, is the wheels. They don't look quite right to me. I would do a big and little set. Don't change it on my part; just some input, thats all. Overall I love the idea of new tech in old car. This one has it in spades.

The pictures I posted probably don't show it well, but it does have big and little tires. Which wheels are you thinking?? I was only planning on using these wheels because I wanted to stick with the SVT theme, and these are the wheels from the '97 Mustang Cobra SVT that I took the interior and the engine from. I'm always open to suggestion!!
dub Posted December 12, 2007 Posted December 12, 2007 I don't know why, but they look the same size here! It's probably just me. Maybe I need my eyeglass prescription updated! I was thinking something in the Pegasus line, nothing specific comes to mind right away. I also didn't think about the theme build either. The 'Stang wheels do tie in better for that. It's all good... I just have ideas for one I can build my way. That's what's great about this hobby. One person's build can ignite a whole raft of ideas in another person for their future builds without building the same car with different wheels.

Jonathan, I doubt that it's your glasses...I really didn't focus on getting good pictures of the tires for the "On the Bench" shots. The front tires are Goodyear Polyglas GT F60-15's and the rears are Goodyear Polyglas GT L60-15's. (I guess that tells you how old they are...they actually have a brand name on them...) The front tires measure 1.010" (25 1/4" in 1:1 scale) in diameter and the rear tires measure 1.100" (27.5" in 1:1 scale). Unfortunately, I'm already pretty well committed to using these wheels. Because of the modifications that I had to make to the axle and spindles to get them on the car, they are glued on as tight as a...well, you know what I mean...
Guest rick r Posted December 12, 2007 Posted December 12, 2007 Just a thought Raul... Your Merc looks so real that it could almost be a Mustang rebody using a Gene Winfield fiberglass body over the sn-97 chassis and interior.
