ZIL 111V Posted December 8, 2007 Posted December 8, 2007 Where can I get the correct DD 70's green spray can paint for amt's DD 8V-71 & 8V-92T engines, went to local DD service center & got a spray can but the "alpine green" seems a bit to dark in shade compared to 70's DD catalog pix....any suggestions
Aaronw Posted December 8, 2007 Posted December 8, 2007 (edited) I've used Dupli-colors DD Alpine Green, I haven't actually compared it up close to a 1-1 engine, but it looks close to me. If you don't like that, last winter I didn't want to wait for nice spray paint weather so I tried the Polly S British Interior Grey Green. It was actually pretty close if maybe a touch lighter, the Polly S is a brush on acrylic but you might see if its available in Testors or Tamiya spray cans. British Interior Grey Green is a military aircraft color if your LHS seperates paints into military and non-military colors. Edited December 8, 2007 by Aaronw
Old Albion Posted December 8, 2007 Posted December 8, 2007 One of my next projects is to build a batch of three 12V71T Detroit Diesel engines. Trying to find the correct shade of Alpine Green has been difficult. But I've found a colour that matches pretty good. Its the Revell SM365. Its a satin finish, but I'm not to worried about that because all three engines will be weathered anyway.
mackinac359 Posted December 8, 2007 Posted December 8, 2007 I went to a Detroit Diesel shop and bought a can of the paint they have in spray cans. Tim
ZIL 111V Posted December 8, 2007 Author Posted December 8, 2007 The "alpine green" spray can I got from parts dept at DD service center was the only green shade available the parts clerk told me, at least a this service center...... was wondering if a"lighter" shade of DD green was still available in can...did hold the painting of 3 amt's engines to be sure. Was "alpine green" a "real" color used by DD in the 70's-80's to paint their engines? ........ALL of the pix I see of 8V71's or 8V92T are very light "pastel" green.
Old Albion Posted December 8, 2007 Posted December 8, 2007 Check out this old Kenworth that was sold on E-bay a few days ago. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Kenworth-W9...10QQcategoryZ80 It has a 12V71 engine in Detroit Alpine Green. If you look on the ATHS web site there was quite a discussion about it which led to other things. I have saved the photo's for future reference. Hope this helps.
Semi Trailer Mechanic Posted December 9, 2007 Posted December 9, 2007 What's goin' on... What you probably got was called Series 60 Blue. A few years ago I did the same thing as you by going to a Detroit warrenty/dealer shop. I've heard that NAPA Auto Parts has the light green paint (Alpine Green) you're looking for.
sourkraut Posted December 10, 2007 Posted December 10, 2007 Alpine green was the only factory color for all two stroke Detroit Diesel engines except the series 92 engines, they were silver.! That is why the 92 series engines are known as "silver 92's". As posted before some manufacturers may have requested other colors, Peterbilt in particular would have been white in the 70's and early 80's. Not sure of the years Peterbilt did this.
ZIL 111V Posted December 10, 2007 Author Posted December 10, 2007 We learn every day! ....so different colors where used at the DD plants for V8's: green for the 71 series & silver for 92T series, always tough that all series V8 DD engine of the 70's early 80's where painted green, no matter what truck manufacturer got them. meaning that the following amt's engines should be painted: - 8V-71 in Amt's Pete 359 T500 & 352... so white engine on side artbox is not an "artistic" rendering.... ALL the ones shipped to Peterbilt plants where painted White back in late 60'-70's? - 8V-71 in Astro 95/Titan kits..... Green? - 8V-92T in Amt's Kenworth Aerodyne K100 & GMC General/Bison.....Silver? ..........Remember painting guide in ERTL International Transtar Eagle II said the 8V DD engine should be painted RED....got me confused back then, but now I know it was not a print error
sourkraut Posted December 10, 2007 Posted December 10, 2007 Yes! All Detroit's 2-53,3-53,4-53,6v-53,4-71,6-71,6v-71,8v-71,12v-71 and 16v-71 including turbocharged versions (think I got them all) should be Alpine green. I am not sure about the 6-110. All 92 series should be silver. Not your common rattle can silver, this too is a special color (kind of bluish-gray shade of silver). Not series 60 blue either, that is closer to Oldsmobile blue used in the 60's and 70's. But not quite! Duplicolor Alpine green engine paint dead on as far as I can tell, they also have most other engine colors except Caterpillar yellow (Peoria Puke). Cat's lawyers are vicious and will be all over you like ugly on an ape, they will go after you for things as little as an oil filter decal!

They actually have a line covering most of the big tractor maker colors.
ZIL 111V Posted December 11, 2007 Author Posted December 11, 2007 Thanks to all for your inputs, really appreciate it, GREAT forum. Only ONE bugging question left......what color should be the DD engine in amt's Pete 359 (T500) & 352 DD Green? or White? when a tractor was bought brand "new" in 1969-70, guess later engine overhaul in some Petes did get a "green" 8V71's. ...Think I'll stick to AMT's tractor kits with the good'ol Cummins NTC350, LESS ASSLE FOR COLORS, one color fits all Thanks again.
ABC Auto Industry Posted December 11, 2007 Posted December 11, 2007 Up until 1984, Peterbilt engines were white, with a few exceptions. Of course, if the engine were rebuilt, it might be painted a new color.
Southgate Posted December 19, 2007 Posted December 19, 2007 I went to a Detroit Diesel shop and bought a can of the paint they have in spray cans. Tim I agree with Tim, especially on this color. I always wonder why some put so much effort into finding a "close" color, when usually it isn't, and you can easily get the correct match at most automotive parts stores. If it doesn't seem to match the pictures in catalogs, keep in mind the conditions under which the pictures were taken, etc. Detroit Diesel Alpine Green is a VERY distintive color.
