Craig Irwin Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 Like I said, there are several stories floating around... I'd always heard that Stu Sutcliffe came up with "Beetles" from a combination of Buddy Holly's Crickets AND his favorite movie Wild Ones motorcycle club Beetles, and John changed the E to a A for the word play. But I always liked the flaming pie theory. BTW, this weekend marks the 50'th anniversary of the day the music was reborn.

There will be a special on TV on the 9th, I think... the 50th anniversary of the day the Beatles first appeared on the Ed Sullivan show.

I'll be glued to the set, just like I was 50 years ago. I was an early fan after hearing the Vee-Jay releases on WLS AM in the fall of '63.
berr13 Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 I used to live in Lubbock, and once had occasion to speak with Larry Holley, Buddy's older brother. He said that one of Buddy's goals was to come back to Lubbock and build a state-of-the-art recording studio, and devote more time to developing his music and working with other musicians. I've always wondered what incredible stuff might have come from that, and if Buddy's creative genius might have created another Nashville/LA/New York, music-wise. Larry also said that Buddy would get in trouble every year at Lubbock High, at the annual talent show, by composing and performing songs about the school and teachers
