1972coronet Posted February 10, 2014 Posted February 10, 2014 I just received --well , a couple of days ago-- the Gibson Dodge / Plymouth 1968-1971 340 , and my first thought upon viewing its contents was , Wow ! Gibson paid attention to the subtle details to this "Baby Hemi" engine ; to wit : - Both water pumps are included ( 1968-1969 with the lower hose attachment on the driver's side ; and the 1970 & later pump with the attachment on the passenger's side !) - Pre-mid-1972 900 oil filtre mount - Both red and Orange "Pie Tin" engine size callouts - Carter AVS atomiser - Pre-1972 alternator ("Round Back") "Questionable" inclusions ? - Exhaust manifolds . The ones in the kit are 1968-1970 'A'-Body-specific parts . For *whatever* reason , Chrysler changed the passenger's side manifold to an inferior "Log" type ; the 'B' and 'E' bodies retained the 1970 style. - Air cleaner is 1968-1969 only . - Valve covers appear to be 1970 & later versions (breather and PCV were 'reassigned' for the 1970 model year , due to evapourative emissions regulations) Even with the "rivet-counter" points , this engine is one which comes highly recommended . The year-to-year changes are simple to adapt ; intake from the AMT '71 Duster may fit (to adopt the Carter ThermoQuad , or perhaps the Six Barrel induction) , and ; the air cleaner from the same Duster will probably also work for 1970-1971 applications. Kudos to Gibson for this gorgeous replica of one of the "Junior Supercar" era engines !
kelson Posted February 10, 2014 Posted February 10, 2014 (edited) I recently bought one as well, planning on putting in the new 70'cuda,i also have his 383 and 440,426 engines and they look really good as well. Edited February 10, 2014 by kelson
The70judgeman Posted February 10, 2014 Posted February 10, 2014 I've been thinking about getting, like Curtis, different displacement engines to build a few 'Cuda's...well, at least 4. Gonna use the HEMI in the kit for one. The plan is a 340, 383, 440, & 426 powered "Cuda's. My question is though, are the Gibson engines really worth the, give or take, $30 each? I mean, a 'Cuda kit and a Gibson motor....right there, you're at around $60. Although, I think I can scrounge a 440 from another kit.
Ron Hamilton Posted February 10, 2014 Posted February 10, 2014 (edited) I love the Ross Gibson engines. I am putting one of those into an Air Trax '83 Dodge Mirada, as a 360. Sorry I cannot post the picture of the model as it sits in this thread. Edited February 11, 2014 by Ron Hamilton
kelson Posted February 11, 2014 Posted February 11, 2014 I just recently bought the 340 from a seller in Canada and only paid $15 dollars minus shipping, the other engines I bought at least 10 years ago and paid around 15-18 dollars, the next best alternative is to place an ad seeing if someone wants to trade and the last SAE Tim boyd has a great article on mopar muscle v8's and what kits have the engine.
FASTBACK340 Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 I'm building the 340-6Bbl. now. And yes, I was happy to see the early water pump too! Just be careful with the preparation of the pieces as they need quite a bit of clean-up on the mating surfaces. But man, does it look nice! Post pictures of it going together!
gtx6970 Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 I must be in the minority, I don't see the point of a $30 resin engine, when you can buy an entire AMT duster kit for about half that( usually less )
1972coronet Posted February 15, 2014 Author Posted February 15, 2014 I must be in the minority, I don't see the point of a $30 resin engine, when you can buy an entire AMT duster kit for about half that( usually less ) I have a couple of those in the rafters as well , including one or two of the Street Machine version's engine ; the latter because of the lack of "mandatory" air conditioning compressor mounting / brackets / belts & routing . That "Viper-esque" engine has only provisions for the H2O pump , crank , and alternator accessories , which is perfect for the Six Barrel arrangement from the stock 340 in the stock version . $30 is "spendy" for sure , but it's worth every penny . Where else is one going to find water pumps for both the 1968-1969 (cast iron) and the 1970 & later versions ?
1972coronet Posted February 15, 2014 Author Posted February 15, 2014 ...and then there's that gorgeous A-727-A transmission ! Other than "missing" the internals , it assembles exactly like the "1:1" version ; separate case , oil pan , and tail housing / extension !
FASTBACK340 Posted February 15, 2014 Posted February 15, 2014 Where else is one going to find water pumps for both the 1968-1969 (cast iron) and the 1970 & later versions ? And a TWO piece mechanical fuel pump. It is expensive, but it's soooo freakin nice! This is a Ross Gibson 440 done as a 413 long ram.
