FASTBACK340 Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 Good chair, bad chair…. I'm still shot. I had neck pain so bad last night it kept me up. Now add in my lower back is toast from shoveling yesterday and I'm hurting. Worst part is my driveway is un-shoveled in front of my car and Amy had to walk to the train station, so I can't even get to the doctor today. I'm hoping to catch a for-hire shoveler working the neighborhood so I can get out…. To say this is a bad time to get hurt is an understatement…..
disabled modeler Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 I know what you mean John...cant get anyone to do it around here unless I pay big bucks for it and that is not happening. Me I have pain all the time but cant do it myself anyway. We have a couple of kids that do it here in the neighborhood but they charge a stupid rate for not much at all....shovel width path 20 foot long and they want 40.oo to do it????....I am not against young kids making some money for work but seems like quite a bit for just that to me so I turn them down.
FASTBACK340 Posted February 14, 2014 Author Posted February 14, 2014 (edited) I'm fortunate that my neighbors on either side me race to see who's going to shovel first. If any of us get out first, we do our property and the neighbors sidewalks, to allow passage. When my neighbor gets home to my left I'll ask him to finish my entire driveway to the street. Great neighbors whom are friends too. I'm just concerned about my well-being. My neck has been bothering me for a while, but it has never been this painful. My lower back has been an issue when ever I exert myself too much. This is a combination of a bad car accident as a kid and being overweight for many years. But the neck…. this is serious pain. disabled modeler Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 John... in 1996 I was in a really bad car accident on my way to work. I was stopped at a red light and got hit from behind on only one side at about 60mph in a 30 zone...my car went across the street cutting a power pole off. I was told the first cop that showed up went and got a sheet out of his trunk thinking I was gone...took them 30 minutes to cut the roof off and get me out of the car. The medics shocked me twice on the way to the hospital. I had broken back, neck, blood clots in my lungs, broken sternum and a bused heart....now have 15 pieces of metal in my lower back and a plate and screws in my neck...24/7 pain they can do nothing for from nerve damage. I have good neighbors in the area but there not much better shape than me. Our truck is a 4x4 84 Chevy pickup..thinking of getting a snow blade for it if I can make or find one sometime...then I can do mine and the others here in the area I live where there is a lot of elderly and disabled people that just cant afford it...figure i could do theirs for free then.
FASTBACK340 Posted February 14, 2014 Author Posted February 14, 2014 Wow Mark…. so sorry to hear what happened to you. I take it you had no financial compensation from getting blasted? If thats the case, you really have my sympathy. I had an accident too, but not nearly the ordeal you described. Wow…. I feel like an ass for complaining, but there's some bad undercurrents at work right at the moment. Now is NOT a good time to be absent. This might be a headache for me. If the Dr.'s office ever calls back with the appointment I can at least justify the day off. Never mind what happens next….
disabled modeler Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 Thanks John... Na don't worry about it buddy...some of us just have had worse luck than others...and no I did not get anything from them for the accident and injuries they had almost no insurance so it did not last but part of that day and nothing to get otherwise. Hope you get to feeling better soon...aint no fun that is for sure. I have always built models...just more important than ever now to pass the time by. Hard part is my disability income is very very small but at least its something. My conditions are expected to only get worse over time and have...makes building fun sometimes...LOL... but I just don't build when I am at my bad days. I am sure there are many others out there worse than me too.
FASTBACK340 Posted February 14, 2014 Author Posted February 14, 2014 Spoke with my manager finally and he understands whats going on. I have an appointment on Tuesday. Hopefully I'll get in on Monday…. Age + Hurt = Bucket of suckness

Quick GMC Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 I had a rough week as well. I'm nursing a herniated disc. I've been walking hunched over for the last week, I'm 30.
FASTBACK340 Posted February 14, 2014 Author Posted February 14, 2014 Now there you go John...not all people are uncaring....most are but not all. I sure hope so. I don't want any "surprises" right now.
disabled modeler Posted February 15, 2014 Posted February 15, 2014 I sure hope so. I don't want any "surprises" right now. I hear ya John...been there too...have faith buddy.
mnwildpunk Posted February 15, 2014 Posted February 15, 2014 I feel your pain I was snowblowing about a week ago and one leg went one direction and the other went the opposite hurt my hip and groin. Still hurts hope your feeling better soon
FASTBACK340 Posted February 19, 2014 Author Posted February 19, 2014 Doctor said I have 2 compressed vertebrate, an un-natural non-curvature of my neck, and Arthritis. No remedy…. no repair…. just stretching exercises. And it's going to get worst before it gets better….. Well, I guess thats better than hearing the saw fire up.
jeffs396 Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 Ouch John! Is a second opinion an option for you?
Quick GMC Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 I know a lot of people here will be appalled at the suggestion, but if you experience severe pain from the arthritis and you're open to suggestions, medical marijuana may help you. I have two herniated discs and I fractured a vertebrae at 17. Now I have a torn labrum in my shoulder and in the beginning stages of arthritis. I'm 30. Pills help but the biggest problem is running out and not being able to get more. There's not a whole lot of options out there

There's not a whole lot of options out there I'm more appalled at all the modified GMO's in my food or religious beliefs than someone suggesting a natural alternative. Yes, MM has it's benefits, but not until the Gov`ment see's a way to make money on it. Think Phiser or Warner-Lambertt wants YOU growing your medicine in your backyard instead of buying it from them? Besides, it's just a mask, not a fix. I'm seriously thinking of changing careers…. my body is just wearing out from being in the shop.
disabled modeler Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 That is good news buddy!... The saw I have been there twice....not any fun at all...not to mention I cant sneak past a metal locator.
johnbuzzed Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 There are a lot of genuine, legitimate medications, OTC and Rx, available that are masks- not everything can be cured, repaired or healed.
disabled modeler Posted February 26, 2014 Posted February 26, 2014 There are a lot of genuine, legitimate medications, OTC and Rx, available that are masks- not everything can be cured, repaired or healed. That is true John.... I have nerve damage and it is the root of my pain problem they tell me...makes sense that meds don't help me much. Though I have 24/7 pain they can do nothing for really I am lucky to be here in the first place...by all accounts I shouldn't.
Mike_G Posted February 27, 2014 Posted February 27, 2014 The nerves to my right deltoid muscle were severed in a motorcycle crash in 2008, the neurologist was not optimistic about my chances for recovering my deltoid function but on the advice of a friend I started eating Lion's Mane mushrooms, both in freeze-dried capsule form and fresh mushrooms I grew myself. After about 8 months my nerves regenerated and my deltoid started working again.
slusher Posted February 27, 2014 Posted February 27, 2014 IN many cases sometimes a nerve block can be done. I have known some friends with bad backs and they regretted the surgery. Snow is also heavy and a back brace would help with support. when I was a kid I grabbed the shovel after school and go to work. I took what people would pay. Many I worked for was older people. Made good money every time. Kids are spoiled now they have everything they want nothing to work for. I shoveled lots of snow in Chicago as a kid.
High octane Posted February 27, 2014 Posted February 27, 2014 Carl, now that you mentioned it we did have an elderly lady living next to us in Chicago and I used to keep her walks and stairs clear of snow. Don't remember what I charged or what she paid me though, as that was back in the early-mid-60's. My back was okay then as I was just a young buck, and it was before I got into a few auto accidents. My backs never been the same since.
mnwildpunk Posted February 27, 2014 Posted February 27, 2014 If you not afraid of needles they could give you a cortisone shot in that area it's a steroid that relieves the swelling for about six weeks I get them and it works for my back pain for about 2 1/2 months I know surgery is down the road but I am going to wait as long as possible because I never hear of a successful surgery on a back yet
High octane Posted February 27, 2014 Posted February 27, 2014 I've had a number of cortisone shots in my knees before having them replaced. When the knee pain got progressively worse, the shots became useless and it was time for surgery. I have got an epidural in my spine for back pain, and it does seem to help, along with some stretching exercises. The first one lasted 'bout 13 years. I thank God that my health is not worse.
