LVZ2881 Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 should their pearl top coat be shot over clear, or should a regular clear be shot over the pearl, or should the pearl be just shot over the base color as a final top coat?? I painted a nascar model chrome yellow with pearl top coat directly over the yellow to get an accurate color, and was just curious?? also, what about color sanding between color and clear to get a smoother finish, should I?? How long to wait to do it, and what grit paper should be used??

The MM system you can get away with the pearl as the top and final coat.
jbwelda Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 personally i think the pearl should go over the color, and then followed by regular clear coat. dont sand or polish the pearl, it will dull its luster and kill the pearl effect, make it look like really nasty coarse metallic. the clear over the clear pearl will seal the pearl and give you a neutral coat to polish on. ive only used tamiyas pearl once so i dont recall exactly but i do believe the pearl clear leaves a bit of a mottled finish as the pearl specks stick out above the surface so if you want a smooth paint job (which im sure you do) you will want to build up the plain clear to get the surface smooth by polishing. hope that helps and hope that turns out to be what youre after.
LVZ2881 Posted January 17, 2008 Author Posted January 17, 2008 (edited) I painted and pearled it last night, and need to go the LHS to get a can of clear, any reason why I couldnt clear it tomorrow night, then wait 3 days and polish it( as long as its gassed out enough)?? ' I also just found a can of Testors Lacquer ultra gloss clear in my stash, can i use that instead of tamiya?? I seem to remeber that tamiya and testors lacquer were compatible??
