Tony_B Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 Hi all, I wasn't sure whether to post a new thread or tag-along with someone else's....but here goes! -------------- Recently back into the hobby and given those @$@$# Michael's coupons that I keep stealing from the Sunday paper, I've been slowly building up my stash anew. Mostly late 50's and early 60's has the most interest for me, so I've been tackling the infamous AMT 62 Buick Electra and the '57 Ford. I know on the forums here there's lots of opinons on the Buick kit, but it's been good so far. On this one, I primed the body and tried to go with the early 60's tan (beige?) GM color. It orange-peeled up on me, so I've sanded it back down and just waiting for it to warm up here in Ohio before I try again. For the chrome trim on the back I used a silver sharpie and it came out well, but I'm not sure about the shadows in the trim itself...I'm thinking a black wash (if I can pull it off) to get that illusion of depth? I've still got to clean the trim up around the windshield as well.. The second one is the 57 Ford and I've tried to two-tone it. I'm still building my skills, but I'm hoping the planned-for BMF trim on the side can hide my mistakes! Hahahaha... I've got about 5 other kits I'm working on here and there (can you tell I'm type A?) but these are my current two I've been working with in the last week. For now, I'll just try to absorb everyone's knowledge and try to learn as much as possible. You guys are really good with your skills, so I'm taking notes as fast as I can. My fear is the dash(es) will be my downfall however.... --Tony
disabled modeler Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 Welcome Tony...me myself Im a 60s,70s guy but some late 50s are cool too...nice projects.
Roadrunner Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 Interesting stuff. I was just now recalling the first car I ever owned, a '57 Ford Fairlane with a retractable hardtop. Don't know if I want to do a model of it, but I certainly thought it was cool at the time.
StevenGuthmiller Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 You're right in my wheel house Tony! In the past 3 years I've built about 34 kits. 14 of them between '55 & '59. 16 were between '60 & '62. The remaining 4 were '63, '64, '65 & '67. I probably have another 20 kits or so that I'll be building in the next couple of years, nothing newer than '67. Personally, I'm barely interested in anything before '53, & after '72. As far as I'm concerned, those were the real "style" years! Good luck with your builds! Steve
Ramfins59 Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 Nice stuff Tony. I've also been into ALL of the 1950's cars for the past couple of years and I'm trying to build every one I can. Welcome to our plastic playground. You'll love it here.
Guest Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 Welcome! Looking forward to seeing your work. Lots of talent here, feel free to ask questions.
Tony_B Posted December 31, 2014 Author Posted December 31, 2014 Thanks everyone! Yeah, I'm pretty much having 1970 as my cut-off date. (Maybe it's because I can actually remember the early 70's cars). We had a fire-engine red Gremlin.....I've been tempted to try to recreate it, but the jury is still out!
