djway3474 Posted February 9, 2008 Posted February 9, 2008 This is why I won't enter any more outdoor model contest. I have to rebuild this for a friend.
MrObsessive Posted February 9, 2008 Posted February 9, 2008 (edited) OH NO!! Looks like the sun got the best of that! That was a sharp looking model! Where was the contest held where it would get so hot this time of year?? Edit: Okay I see you're in Southern California.............they had all the models out in the sun like that or was it under a tent? YIKES!! Edited February 9, 2008 by MrObsessive
Harry P. Posted February 9, 2008 Posted February 9, 2008 Outdoor model contest???!!! Never heard of such a thing. Bad idea, for obvious reasons. As they say...live and learn.
MrObsessive Posted February 9, 2008 Posted February 9, 2008 Harry, our local Ford dealer has a 1:1 car show every year (Mostly Mustang but other Fords too), and they have an outdoor model contest. It's held in the summer around August, but they're all under a well secured tent..............here in PA it can get super-duper hot. I've been to the show a number of times, but I've never seen anything like that! I'm not crazy about entering outdoor shows for the simple reason that at any moment a sudden strong breeze can come up..................wiping your model out in a matter of seconds. I'd be forever sick if something like that happened considering how long it takes me to build a model!
Harry P. Posted February 9, 2008 Posted February 9, 2008 Something tells me that "scale model cars" and "the great outdoors" don't mix...
djway3474 Posted February 9, 2008 Author Posted February 9, 2008 It was under a tent in October here in So Cal. It was a very hot day. I had another car that was a resin and the only thing that melted was the plastic hood. Kinda Strange. Dwayne
Darrell Gwinn Posted February 9, 2008 Posted February 9, 2008 That makes me sad....its kind of like seeing a 1:1 muscle car after its been wrecked... its like a loss in the family even if its not yours!
mudshark Posted February 9, 2008 Posted February 9, 2008 A few years ago I had a model that had won a fairly major contest (for Toronto area) on display at a full-size car show (outside). It was a scorcher, and the car was in one of those acrylic display cases. The clear cover of the case had a bellybutton-like mold mark on the top of it. When I got home, I realized that my car's top was sagged in the middle, and the lacquer paint was crazed in a number of areas!!! I thought that the "bellybutton" had acted as a magnifying glass to focus the sun's rays on the center of the roof, but I see now that it may have sagged without the help of the clear case. A good caution to put out there to others I guess. mudshark

jbwelda Posted February 10, 2008 Posted February 10, 2008 if something is in a closed glass or plastic display case and the sun shines on it, it gets incredibly hot inside. its the greenhouse effect. even 80 degree direct sun could do that in a display case. its like being inside your car with all the windows up in the summer: hot fast! i agree with bill though: the worst part is the sudden breeze or wind coming up. that can wreak havoc on a whole table of cars. sorry about that body, must have been in the direct sun for a while i would guess...
lizardlust Posted February 10, 2008 Posted February 10, 2008 I am sorry to see this - the first feeling I had looking at your pics was a queasy feeling in the pit of my stomach. Outdoor contests/displays are BAD NEWS - I got to see the Flourescent Red on my 92 Petty Pontiac turn various brown shades under the clearcoat after getting "sunburned" at a show 15 years ago, and it still upsets me!
scubadiver411 Posted February 10, 2008 Posted February 10, 2008 That is really sad to see such a nice looking model ruined like that, but, after looking at it a few more times, I noticed something.... if you put the model back together and put it in a driveway diorama and lean a tree over it from the rear qtr panel with some branches on the hood in front of the steering wheel...... well, you could salvage the model and give it another purpose in life. I just hate to see plastic thrown away, even if it is warped beyond repair. STEVE ALLEN
sdrodder Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 so sad !! a few years ago i built a ford fairlane super muscle car got it finished and put it a glass case with a light ,, the light was to hot and melted the whole car i cryed like a baby so much time and hard work on a similar note i was doing some custom work on a old 51 chevy fleetline shaved smothed choped filled in the rear quarters so cool best work i ever did my nephews pitbull eat it hence i flipedout so i realy feel your pain jack..... ps if ya look in my photobuket you can see the replacment 51 chevy and a merc i put a lot of body work in That dog would not live another second if it ate one of my custom projects. Well atleast its teeth would be missing so that it couldnt eat another project.
conor1148 Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 look on the bright side, that could make one interesting model!
