I recently got some sanding film, 15,000 to 60,000. Is this type of sandpaper supposed to be used as a wet and dry or just as is? I have a car that I did several years ago, and I wet sanded it with 3200 to 12,000 wet and dry paper. I got a very nice smooth and shinny finish, and then waxed it to a super shine. When I got this sanding film 15,000 to 60,000, I went over this same car, and used this sanding film as wet and dry. I got a very smooth finish, even smoother than the regular 3200 to 12,000 gave me. The results sort of dumb founded me, as even though I got a very smooth finish, it did not give me the same shine as the previous wet and dry sand papers did. So I went thru my various scratch removers and waxes and got a bit of a better shine, but still not as nice as was previously done. Am I using this 15,000 to 60,000 incorrectly? Should have I used this sanding film dry instead of using it with water? Should have I used this first before using the wet and dry paper? I really would like some feedback on this so that I know what I am doing or did. Thanks so much.,

Whenever I sand paint or finish sand primer, I always wet sand. I also rub my sandpaper on a bar of cheap soap (no moisturizers) every so often while I wet sand. Where did you get the 15,000-60,000 sand paper? I wasn't even aware of sand paper that fine.

Does the 15,000 - 60,000 grit refer to traditional U.S Standard (CAMI) sanding grits (like 400, 600, 1200...) or is it a measurement of Microns like the polishing cloths (3200 - 12,000)?

This is a guess, but it could be the new films you have are CAMI specs and therefore coarser than the Micron ones.

Your results are in line with that thinking.

Either way, I would use them all with water.

To return the luster to that body you could use the polishing cloths you used before. If that does the trick it might also answer my first question.

Sounds to me like the kind of films used to polish fiber optic connectors. Go out and get a Micro Mesh polishing kit, it's all you need. You can't accomplish much starting with a 15000 because you need to level the orange peel with at least a 3200 to start....
