Revell Pete 359...any comments???

Recommended Posts

OK... The last "Big Rig" that I built was when I was a kid ( About 1981) and it was an International Transtar cabover with a Great Dane trailer. Both were made by Ertl. Well until now I have not built any even though I do like the "Big Rigs"!!! I just recently picked up the Revell Pete 359 and was wondering how everyone feels about this kit be it good or bad??? Just curious. I would love to build another Intenational but man......every time I see one on E-Bay they seem to be going for big bucks!! KT

I think the Revell 359 is supposed to be one of the better kits. I haven't built one though so don't have much to add regarding that, I'm sure Tim will be along to tell you everything you could ever want to know about the kit and truck.

However if you are not picky about which IH you build I found the Paystar to be a nice kit, decent detail, good fit, not much flash and unlike most of the IH kits you can usually get it pretty cheap. Of course the Paystar is not what everyone considers a good looking truck but I like it.

What's goin' on...

I like that kit alot. It's a well detailed model. Since you haven't built any semis lately I'd say tinker around w/ the Revell snap tite 359 kit. Don't be fooled thinking it's a cheap snap tite. This has the 3406 cat rectangular headlights (unlike the AMT 359) and the bunk is still used todate according to Tim.

If we are talking about the Revell Peterbilts with The Cummins 475Hp twin turbo. then they are fantastic kits to build.

I built the Black Magic version back in 89 and the detail was fantastic.

How ever the chrome was ######. My chrome had big run marks through it.

The chrome sags really stood out around the fuel tanks and could not always be hidden.

The Kenworth Aerodyne also suffered from chrome runs along with the Aussie Kenworth.

I don't know if Revell ever solved the chrome problem but that was the only bad thing I ever came accross.

I have recently rebuilt my Black Magic Peterbilt minus the Black Magic letters and it sits proudly on the shelves along with my many other truck kits

Cheers

Which Revell 359, the Revell/Monogram 1/25th scale 359 with the small sleeper and non opening doors or the 359 with 63" large sleeper, dual air cleaners and opening cab doors?

The small sleeper 359 is a nice kit, but the Revell (Germany) 359 with the 63" sleeper, dual air cleaners and opening cab doors is much better. There are issues with the early versions of the kit having bad chrome (runny, thin, flaked off easily). The later versions have more flash and need some careful removal of parts from the sprue/trees.

I like both kits myself. The Revell snap tite truck is a great kitbasher and has an awesome looking cat motor in it. Alot of possibilites with that one. The Revell of Germany kit is one of the best out there and is still readily available at a decent price. Around $45.00 around here at our LHS. I have 2 unbuilt snap tite trucks left and 1 Revell of Germany pete left on my shelf. Buy them both, you won't be disappointed. The snap tite kit usually runs around $20.00 + tax. Enjoy

Here's a twist to this thread.. kitbashing the 359 kits.

All three 359 kits, the AMT, Revell-Monogram and Revell Germany are great for kitbashing each other.

The snap-kit can be used to update an AMT 359, and the older AMT parts used to back-date a Revell of Germany 359.

Example: Say you want '76 359 with opening doors, take the dash from the AMT 359 and swap it into the Revell of Germany 359.

Want a smaller sleeper for your Revell of Germany 80's 359? Cut off the bunk from the snap-kit 359, make a new floor and front wall and graft it to your longer wheelbase Revell of Germany kit.

The snap-kit fenders are almost direct fit to update the AMT 359 for the right fender shape.

These two 359's are on the AMT 359 chassis with the fenders and air cleaner from the snap-kit and the air cleaner cap from the Revell of Germany 359.

The combinations are nearly endless.

That's why we're all glad your here Tim! Your endless facts and information! I know it helps me!When I built my second snap tite truck I cut the sleeper off and grafted the backside of an old amt 359. The reason I did that, not only to have the window but the rivot detail as well. It's funny you should mention the sleeper idea. I was toying around with the cut off sleeper a couple off weeks ago with the Yellow 359 I'm rebuilding for my auto trailer. I was stting it on the frame of the truck to see what a skinny bunk would look like on the Revell Germany truck. It looked really nice with that wheelbase. And then I came up with the idea for one of my future builds. I have a Revell Can do tow truck. I am going to build the truck without the wrecker and put the bunk from the snaptite truck on her. I bought that wrecker kit for the parts anyways.

Its the one thats blue on the box with "teeth" on the grille. I do believe its the one with the smaller sleeper and the non-opening doors. Thanks for all the input!!!!!! KT
