AMT Ford L-Series Tire Size?

Recommended Posts

A question for those in the know: what is the most common tire size offered in the AMT Ford L-series trucks? I know the most recent issue of the car hauler has Firestone 10.00x20 tires, just wondering if all issues have it? I picked up the Coca-Cola version of the short hauler from the local thrift shop that was open but parts still in bags inside. I didn't notice at the time, but when I went to start putting it together I only had five out of the six tires, and they were Goodyear 11.00x20. The tires all still had the webbing on them so I thought they were what came in the kit, but when talking with a friend that gave me the tire I was missing, he said that all of the short hauler kits he has all came with 10.00x20s. Now, I had tried putting on a set of 10.00x20s on the kit and there was a large gap between the rears; with the 11.00x20s there is no gap at all. Did the tandem versions of this tooling have the bigger tires?

The 11.00 X 22s are from the freightliner, autocar, roadboss kits,They would work if you had the right size rims for them. All of the louisville kits had the 10.00 X 20 size tires, the tandems too.Shouldnt be too hard to find some 20 inch tires, most of the other AMT kits used them. Harvey

I bought several of the Coke version Louisville kits all factory sealed and they all had the 11.00 X 20 inch Goodyear tires. Some of the older versions like the Ryder or Pops Produce came with the smaller 10.00 X 20 Goodyear tires. Those 11.00 X 20 tires were originally from MPC and when ERTL took over the moulds for the MPC trucks they started using that same 11.00 X 20 tire in their kits. When AMT became AMT/ERTL those tires found their way into some of the AMT Kits like the Coke version of the Louisville, GMC General, Mack R Model, etc. that previously under the AMT brand only had the 10.00 X 20 tires but the later reissues of those same kits saw the larger tire. I prefer the fit of the 11.00 X 20 tires on the rears as you had mentioned as they fit without leaving gaps.

I ran into a similar issue when building the AMT Ford C-series kit. The 10.00x20s looked a bit too narrow and left too large a gap between the tires when used on the dual rear wheels, but I think that may be correct. Here are some shots of a GMC Astro 95 with tandem axles for reference:

The 11.00x20s look better IMHO, but I don't think the 10" tires are necessarily incorrect, just narrower.

i got mixed up on the original question,my answer is not relavent at all.The 11.00 tire from the old MPC kits are the best looking tires out there, they are a little fatter then the 10.00 ones that AMT uses, but the tires are not supposed to touch, the pics of the rear tandems are how it should really be,with the 11.00 tires they are to close together,it does look better but is not really right,You could pack the 10.00 tires with cotton wadding to give them some depth, have seen that done before.
