kpnuts Posted December 28, 2014 Posted December 28, 2014 Hi all, well I'm making a start on the Bentley today, first thin I notice that I'm a bit disappointed with is, when looking at the box art the front mud guard has not got much detail at all as you can see I have a load of rivets and nuts to scratch.
kpnuts Posted December 28, 2014 Author Posted December 28, 2014 Hi all I've had a brilliant idea I have the Airfix 1/12 London icon pack and I'm going to hack the life guard about and have him either getting into or driving the Bentley what better than to have 2 British icons together.
Twokidsnosleep Posted December 29, 2014 Posted December 29, 2014 Postie just dropped mine of this afternoon....big honking box, glad I got the free shipping! Good luck with your build, I will follow along
kpnuts Posted December 29, 2014 Author Posted December 29, 2014 Hi all here is where I am on the Bentley.
sjordan2 Posted December 29, 2014 Posted December 29, 2014 (edited) There have been several threads here on building this kit. I suggest you search the forum, and especially look at the build by John Teresi. There's a lot to learn so you don't have to reinvent the wheel. There is also a current build on this forum that you may want to look at... http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=95098&page=1 In addition, your build progress should be posted in the section of this forum called "Big Boyz," because of the large scale. Twokidsnosleep Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 Keep at her bud, looks good so far, need more of these beautiful classics You may get it moved over, but not many know about big boys section The mods can do that if they like, just keep posting!! Scott
kpnuts Posted December 30, 2014 Author Posted December 30, 2014 Heres a little bit more done on the Bentley
kpnuts Posted January 1, 2015 Author Posted January 1, 2015 Hi all here is the progress so far I've put a 1/32 airfix kit and a 1/12 scale tamiya kit with it just to show how big this beast is.
kpnuts Posted January 2, 2015 Author Posted January 2, 2015 Hi all I am so cross(mostly with myself for not testing it first) I received some humbrol acrylic chrome in a spray can today, and, eager to try it out I did it straight on the bentley engine, it clearly says acrylic on the can, and I primed the engine with humbrol enamel so there should have been no problem, anyway I started spraying and thought this smells very much like celloluse paint. now that is exactly the effect I would expect spaying cellulose on enamel not when spraying acrylic. so now its getting the oven cleaner treatment, so take this as a warning.smell your paint first.
kpnuts Posted January 2, 2015 Author Posted January 2, 2015 I think humbrol put the wrong paint in the can there is no way a water based acrylic paint should do this to plastic. Now I can believe cellulose doing that.
Twokidsnosleep Posted January 2, 2015 Posted January 2, 2015 Oh dear, that sucks Just be careful with the repaint, seen too many builds go off the rails trying to "fix" bad paint with chemical soaking etc
kpnuts Posted January 3, 2015 Author Posted January 3, 2015 Hi all here is tonights progress on the Bentley
sjordan2 Posted January 3, 2015 Posted January 3, 2015 Awesome. You may want to add some horizontal mesh coming up across the bottom of the fuel tank.
kpnuts Posted January 6, 2015 Author Posted January 6, 2015 Hi all here is todays bit on the Bentley.
Twokidsnosleep Posted January 6, 2015 Posted January 6, 2015 Looking good, engine block came out real nice Your pics are much better and easier to see on a white background
kpnuts Posted January 11, 2015 Author Posted January 11, 2015 Hi all done a bit to the bentley today.
kpnuts Posted January 12, 2015 Author Posted January 12, 2015 Hi all well here are the driver and admirers that will be going with this model. They are from the Airfix London icon set, so I think very fitting.
Twokidsnosleep Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 The guys will look quite 'proper' in that Bentley
kpnuts Posted January 13, 2015 Author Posted January 13, 2015 Well I got some rivets, nuts and braided hoses today for detailing her also found an old base from the Christie steam fire engine which was too badly broken to be repaired and anyway I've stolen lots of bits off it for other dios, so thought since its cobbled stones it would be good as a base for the Bentley. I've filled sanded and primed the people for the base as well.
kpnuts Posted January 15, 2015 Author Posted January 15, 2015 Hi all here is where the Bentley is now
kpnuts Posted January 17, 2015 Author Posted January 17, 2015 Hi all here is all day and most of last nights work.
sjordan2 Posted January 17, 2015 Posted January 17, 2015 Looking great. Nice wrapping on the springs.
Twokidsnosleep Posted January 17, 2015 Posted January 17, 2015 Hey Skip, what were those wrapped with on the real car and why??
sjordan2 Posted January 17, 2015 Posted January 17, 2015 (edited) Hey Skip, what were those wrapped with on the real car and why?? I never got a full explanation, but I always thought it was something like sisal / burlap cord to add strength, reduce squeaking of factory-oiled springs and prevent grime buildup between the leaves. I think Harry, Cato or Art will have real answer. Some cars, like Rolls and Mercedes, used full leather sleeves on each end ("gaiters"). Edited January 17, 2015 by sjordan2
