  1. Hello fellow Brass Builders - check out the ITC 1911 MERCER thread for a small article about one of my Heroes... Ed Roy. I think you will find it very Interesting. All the best Frank.

Thanks Frank, for those into any type scale models would enjoy seeing one of these little mechanical marvels @ work. I was also impressed by the speed of the little racer.........saw mentioned they were ran like a thither car.........another of those by-gone era cars once screaming in circles. If you ever get a chance to see one of these little monster do their thing, go check it out. So many good subjects brought out here, that's why I spend more time here than any other of the Forums I belong too, thats all of them, from card models, ships and plastic.

  2. 1905 FIAT w/AERO engine, I am a big FIAT fan and here is one that I am looking @ materials to build in 1/8th scale........of course I will need to break out the drafting tools and draw up a set of plans........I do believe it is doable........I believe! ;)

Of course Pocher parts such as 2 complete Fiat frames, a set of the chains and sprockets, Alfa wheels/tires......balance scratch built.

Use alum. sheet left in natural finish f/hood. I believe the travel trunk is not apart of the car, the article read about the guys attempting to run the car @ speed and they traveled to do this. Engine produces 300 hp.

  3. Ed Roy..............I once knew a individual who did what Ed did, but not with cars.......train engines. His old work shop looked like it was about to fall in, a dirt floor, smelled like then inside of a boiler and tools were everywhere. A work bench sat in the middle of the shed, made from RR cross ties, had to be to support the weight of a scale Big Boy (I believe the scale was 1/4 scale, not sure), every nut and bolt, sand in the sand box to the complete and fully operable boiler, controls functioned in the cab, the horn worked from steam and of course the lights all worked from the scale generator...........just like Ed Roy's scaled down real cars.........so when I see this type of work, there is no comparison...........these guys are dying out and you do not see this workmanship being carried on. There is a fella, I would need to research, who does work on this level in South America..........but again, I can not recall where I read about him.

Its not good enough that it looks like the subject, it also has to operate like the subject............oh, that Big Boy w/tender and a section of scale track was sold to help pay to bury that kind old man.........where it is @ today, I have no idea, but I bet it is the center piece where it sets. I do remember him saying @ that time when I saw it last.........weight was over 300lbs..... :o

Thanks for sharing this..........I like the photo of him setting their w/his creations.

  4. Thought I would up-date............individual contacted me and offered to refund the money or send another kit........I opted f/the kit.

Mistakes can and do happen, and I was lucky enough to get a honest person who wanted to correct the error.

So all's well, that ended well.

  5. Ordered a HM Mercer from Gasolinealley.com, just easier this way, if he has what you want, e-mail the desired kit, they invoice you and pay.......deal completed. But be aware, his kits are pristine, 100% complete, they look like you just bought from the Hobby Shop in 1950! Price reflects this, but is well worth it. Well packaged, priority mail and insured if you like. You pay the ship charges. Good people to deal with.......but again, pricey. When I have ordered from them, I never have to worry if the kit is not complete, wheels warped or the wood looks bad from too much heat/water damage.

He will gladly answer any question you might have.

  6. Beautiful work on this build! I have 2 of the Old 16 kits already so some day I'll build one of them!

and as far as balsa wood models go I'll just leave this here...... :D

    DSC_0191_zps7f68eb59.jpg

Nice collection..........build man, build.......prices, well I have paid $12.00 to $100.00 (Ole 16".......just bought another Old 16 f/22.50)..........seems most want $49.00 and up.......but you can still find a deal, agree........but agree, hard to find and if you do, everybody in their brother is wanting the thing too!

I have built a small collection as well and I am now adding duplicates.......one f/collection, 1/f building.......current project is a HM's and I am using the balsa as much as I can in the build. Thanks for showing those wonderful kits.

  7. Yea, read what that torque from chain did when it flew off and hit him in the head! I have to admit, mine are not BIG enough for this ride?

100 mph, face in the wind behind the wheel of a Loco Mobile or Alco............. ..............maybe w/enough liquid back bone.

171mph............... ..................nuts, as the General said.

But it is a bad set of wheels, and I would love to see Frank turn one out.

    Rick

  8. Printers Plate is a thin metal, almost like what you get from cutting up a pie pan, but is more rigid. Ask around your local print shops to see who uses this material to make type sets.........they will either sell or give you the scrape material. If you do ever find a source, take them coffee and donuts........you will want as much of the stuff as you can get..........cuts easily, holds it's shape and requires primer, but does take paint well.

Hope this has helped.........I like the stuff because you can make scale looking panels w/it.........perfect for these hoods on the ole gals.

  9. Top on-it's harder. :D

I will cheat..........top off of Aurora 1904 Olds is a perfect fit, matches in shape and also has the fold up/down bars w/it as well...............

this is also the source for the white tires, can always build the Olds w/o top and using another set of tires.

Thanks for the in-put and making a choice.............. ;)

    Rick

  10. All one needs is a set of scale drawings.............171 mph :o. Killed when hit w/chain, car burned and was buryed where it came to rest until dug back up and restored, what a story..........I would be afraid there might be a haunt in that thar thing?

But is a bad set of wheels.........Liberty Aero Engine.......Brit car and driver.......American design engine......Jenny comes to mind.

OK Frank, chim in on this.....you got any ideas as what to use for this one.........?

    Rick

  11. Well another Monday has come and gone, down time @ home with my little wood car............ :P

Am playing with scrape balsa to determine best glue type for construction, taking dope and paint............CA, CA Gel, PVA, Balsa Glue (tube type......Duco), UHU.........etc, etc.

Sadly, yes, I do have all these types of glue............one of my favorite type glue comes from Poland, sticks to high heaven, goes on like contact and when you bring the two parts together......better be where you want them. Seems the stuff is used to put leather shoe bottoms on with......... :o

Use this for ship and leather work on Pochers. I like that it does not soak thru what is being glued.

Also am debaiting.........top on or topless.

  12. Well, it's hard to beat Gerald Wingrove but this guy is in the same league.

    http://www.drmischko.com/

I agree, same league but Gerald Wingrove does most of his work himself and I do believe I never saw anywhere that he states his models are the Best in the World.........humbleness goes a great distance more than arrogance.

Nice models yes, art yes............and some do look like clones, albeit way more advanced than a Pocher, but Pocher like none the less.

    Rick

PS: Am I jealous, yes

  13. Thanks Cato, I had forgot about this project.........bought as a tear down and rebuild w/a mass of aftermarket and one of a kind parts......only regret, did not save any of the after build photos when completed........sold to a collector in KY.

For you Cato..............all things have a beginning and a end........do the best to your abilities.

    Look forward to your photos.

    Rick

PS: I have one of these in the closet, NIB........future build.

  14. Just beautiful.

I don't understand after stripping the whole car, why they left the fender braces on?? And 100MPH without even a strap across your waist-sheesh.

As an aside to this, one of you guys have GOT to start building the early, aero-engined LSR cars. true monsters on wheels. You know, Pendine Sands cars...

Cato, you are sett'in the bar high.........there is a FIAT I have wanted too for along time to build, and just as you pointed out, this beast has a aero engine, the body is so tall, the driver has to look over the side to drive the thing................a seed plated can grow into a tree.

  15. I believe this is about the most popular thread here, so many ideas, a cool build and others being formulated.

I lucked up today and snagged another Old 16 off of eBay....$22.50 + ship.............a far cry from what the one from Gasolinealley set be back...... <_< .

But, hey, thats the breaks............and I now have one to build, one to put up. :D

Frank, you used a plastic frame on your build, could you please divulge that info.

I am looking @ using printers plate for the hood, a thin metal very easy to bend and make into the simple shape of the hood.

I also want to make the raditor out of brass shim, the fuel cell from a copper tube w/ends.......what do you recommend for the wheels and tires......not too crazy about the plastic ones in the kit.

    Rick

  16. One of the parts of this hobby I enjoy is reading up and researching the subject.........there are numerous stories of how these Mfg's tried to out do one another. One of my favorite little bits of factoid I found for these types of autos was they would demo how and what the little cars could do...........read that a Oldsmobile was demoed climbing up the steps @ the Capitol Bldg, Washington DC.

Heres a news flash......try that today, better yet other than a 4 wheel drive, what vehicle from the showroom floor could even think of doing this?

Speaking of 4 wheel drives........check the photo out, the orignal 4 wheeler albit, 2 wheel drive cross country.......... ;)

    Rick B)

PS: Check the guy out, he is in to what he is doing, leaning forward from all that HP moving up-hill........you just gotta love this stuff........it ain't American if'n you don't.

  17. Senility is a bad thing-I forgot all about the old tissue and dope.

I've built a ton of flying RC planes that way-then graduated to 3/4 oz. glass cloth and resin.............

Used that on Out Riggers........90+ MPH on water.......... :o.........scale miles per hour.

  18. my OLD 16 is posted on the Vanderbilt site in the mystery photo section. Howard [site manager and owner of the ALCO] sent a nice letter complementing me on it.

The Black Beast would not be too hard to build as a curbside- I sure have the parts to do it! in earlier photos of the car it looks like it had a cream colored chassis that would be awesome with the black body.

Please do............that would be just the cats meow............the Black Beast..........oh yea baby.

  19. Rick, Will you fill the grain with sanding sealer before or after assembly?

I'm guessing it would be difficult after.

Using the tissue keeps me from having to load up the wood w/sanding filler.......after all this is water w/a filler additive and a bonding agent.........I am afraid of how the wood might re-act after the amount of time that has gone by...........this balsa is dry, I dare say any moisture remains in this wood........cured out completely. The tissue is added to the doped wood, then is bonded w/more dope that in turn makes the paper almost a super thin plastic film because of the dope, the paper adds a enormous amount of strength to the structure. Now over this I can add a layer of sanding filler to fill any pores of the paper that are not filled, sand, prime and should have a really slick surface to paint..........thats the idea anyway....... ;)

Oh, the tissue will be the good stuff..........Japanese tissue, almost like silk, takes to shapes easily and is outstanding to paint over.

  20. I guess since the Mercer is on the back burn @ the moment............you know the saying, idle hands are.

Since coming here, I have been introduced to a kit mfg I had until now, never heard of. I for many years was a FF builder, you know, those little stick, paper and rubber band airplanes. Still have of few of my fav's tucked away for future builds. So when I saw that these little jewels were 2 of my loves, old cars and made of balsa.......... @ 1st sight.

I will give a shout out to Frank right here for making these kits known to me.

Well, I have after discovering these little wood/card/metal/plastic kits.......my Hobby Funds continue to drop. I have as of today amassed a small collection of them and still have others coming.

Could not stand it, just had to give one of these a try.....and that is the subject of this thread.

Of course we are talking about a line of kits that 2 of them I have, are dated 1949.........6 years before I was born.........

The quality of the material, you will not get today.........this was when balsa was the best you could get, not this balsa, we get now days. Tight, holds its shape w/o warping. What was the diff, age of the tree when harvested!

So w/o further ado..............1900 Packard built as it came in the small cardboard box in 1949. I will replace the wheel/tires, these did not fair so well, and a new set of lights. Other wise, she will be built from wood, covered w/tissue to add strength and to take doping better before painting.........Red.

One must read, read, read, study, study the plans.......did I say look the plans over.

Amount of info is staggering, all of it is there and the written instructions spell it out f/you.

I started with the box shaped body or carriage which ever suits ya.

As with balsa construction, parts are mocked up, jigged and then glued once you understand how each part fits, does it sit on, up to or across.......is too late if you just start gluing from jump street. ;)

Photos are of cutting out and dry fitting the body together.

  21. The Fiat generally goes for around $400-500, sometimes less. Way less than any of the other Pochers kits. There's one there right now for $500 or best offer.

I built the version where the chain parts are metal and you have to assemble every single link and roller... just like a real chain. I remember that being a somewhat less than enjoyable process...

Yes sir, there is one f/$500.00 or BO, but if one watches, other kits can and do go for lesser amounts..........a Rolls just went w/ship for less $300.00, complete and un-started, in box! Its just being @ the right place @ right time. I agree w/you, the FIAT is a better choice f/1st build, but I am a working blue collar and I like to get the most bang for the dollar........so I do look for the better deals, if a FIAT is going Buy Now f/$500.00 and a RR or Benz is available for the same or lesser amount (agree, not very oft, and yes there are none @ this moment, though some good buys are there if one watches and keeps up with them).......then its a no brainier! I also now look for started/built examples, these can be had for a song and parts can be sourced. I guess I am a bottom line guy when it comes to Hobby Dollars.

    Rick
