  1. One of the major prblems I have with my dios is that there is no front side . This is sometimes a problem when I go to shows. My current project, which is a consruction scene in a gravel pit, will be housed in an old TV cabinet. That way I will have a restricted viewing angle. I won't have to worry about the back side of everything looking right. I still working on the models for it and haven't started on the diorama part yet Thanks Carl Avis
  2. I like to do open area as locations for my dios. I think I just like to see vehicles doing what they were designed to do. Like a backkhoe digging, a firetruck/ police cruiser at an accident, a transport getting loaded/unloaded or a pickup with a trailer in tow. I've yet to build a garage or a junkyard mainly because thats not were vehicles are suposed to be in normal circumstances. However a drive-in restaurant/truckstop does have potential. Thanks Carl Avis
  3. Hi guys and thanks for the welcome. I have built a few dioramas over the years. I've been lurking arouond this forum for a while but didn't have a great deal to offer until the dioramas showed up. My model building is primarily construction, emergency, agricultural or commercial. All are 1/25 scale. This is one of my dioramas that I built a few years ago as a means of displaying the Ertl IH 1466 tractor and plough kit. The ground work is drywall compound, tinted with acrylic paint and covered with model railroad ground covers. Most of the equipment in the truck bed is scratch built and the figures have been repoised. Thanks for looking Carl Avis
  4. Most of my dios start from a need to display a given model in a realistic setting. I almost always start with a vehicle(s) then work from there. If I need support models to finish a dio I'll scratch or modify kits as required. Sometimes I may have to use a diecast to get the particular model required to complate a story line. I only do light weathering to indicate use. I never could get excited about a pile of rust. Thanks Carl
  5. Hi Jared This site might be what your looking for. Its mostly diecst but then again most construction models are. Also checkout Spec-cast models for thier line of crane models http://www.crossroadsdiecast.com/fg36.html http://www.speccast.com/Product_Agricultural.htm hope this helps I'm currently in the process of back dating the AMT D8H into a mid '50's cable blade, pup start non-turbo unit. Progress is slow but here's where I am with the Motor and the winch Thanks Carl Avis
  6. Yes Sam is a truely gifted artist. I to have one of his paintings hanging on my wall. At the North American Model Car contest (NAMCC) held in Detroit back in '98 he did a demo of flame layout. In les than half an hour he had the entire wall of the Hotel meeting room taped in flames and ready to paint. Hos custom painted model cars are sculptures that would fit into any art museum. thanks Carl Avis
  7. I recently redid my basement model room with slatwall panels. It gives lots of options for storage and display shelves. Although I still have more stuff than there is room for. Here is a shot of my desk area This is a shot of the opposite wall This is my "new" paint booth. It was a TV/VCR stand that I salvaged from our fire hall training room. Its on wheels and the 2 downdraft fans that I installed vent through the windows when in use. Thanks for looking Carl Avis edit "well that didn't work too well did it? could someone help me out on posting pics?" CA
  8. I have used this stuff. its more of a scratch filler than a body putty. It has no strength so its only good for very thin aplication. I did wet sand it but I don.t think its as good as Squadrin putties Thanks Carl
  9. Model Builders Suppy has sheets of architectural coverings in 1-24th scale. Here is a link to their home page. They are a decent source of diorama material http://www.modelbuilderssupply.com Thanks Carl Avis
