  1. Hey guys. Thanks for checking on me. I am doing okay. About two years ago, I really got burned out on modeling, so I packed up the workbench and tossed everything on a shelf. The farm always needs attention and I picked up another hobby.

I started doing a little writing. Fictional short stories. And I've fallen in with a real good supportive group of hobbyists, much like I had here, and the change has been extremely cathartic.

Just recently, I have unpacked the workbench and I have grabbed out a WIP and I'm back at it. But in a very 'when I'm in the mood' kinda way. I think my competitive modeling days are behind me and I'll just be building models to shelf specs. I was able to get to a GSL before Covid hit and I was happy to win an award. So that bucket list item has been accomplished and have all the trophies and plagues I have room for.

But, modeling is in my blood and I will always be back. I'll be seeing you around.

  2. Builders, I must apologize. It's terribly irresponsible to start a build-off and then just disappear. But around Oct 2022, I just got utterly burned out on modeling. I picked up another hobby and I've been doing it ever since. I'm only now starting to get back to the modeling bench. I hope those of you who built a model for this enjoyed it and finished it. I'm very sorry to let everyone down.

I will NOT be starting any more CBP's.

Those look like the wheels from the Revell “California Wheels” corvette that was out a few years ago.

Very likely. I parted out one of those many years ago for another Cannonballer. After the Cannonball I dressed her up as a Carrera Panamericana racer. Corvette suspension and the 427.

The Impala is coming along nicely. I lowered the suspension a scale two inches so the increased tire size didn't make the car ride higher and look silly.

  4. I'm not sure what kit these wheels/tires came from but I've been saving them for a special project. I have the bosses modified for mounting. I'm very pleased with the kit engineers. Some forethought was involved. The wheel mounting posts aren't just some arbitrary size, they are 2.5mm in the front and 3.0mm in the rear. Making it easy to modify and re-drill the wheel bosses. I also added disc brakes to the inner surface of the wheel back so that it looks pretty authentic. More soon.

Glad to see you're still kickin' Rob. I was beginning to wonder if you'd drop by somewhere along the line. The Impala's a pretty good kit. I started one years ago but it's buried so deep I think I need to take off a corner of the house to get to it.

Yep. Still around. Just not around these parts. About two years ago, my modeling ADHD was kicking my butt pretty hard to the point where I got burned out. So I started doing a little fiction writing. I've been pretty deep in that now for about a year and a half. But lately, I've been looking at the stash and the state my hobby room has devolved into, and I think it's time to clean up the cobwebs.

The seventeenth running of the Cannonball CBP. Man, that is pretty darn cool. I never would have dreamed it.

  6. Well, It's been nearly two years since I've done any model building. Another hobby has occupied me. I think maybe it's time to clear off my bench and get back to it. I think I'll throw my hat in the ring here if that's okay. A build like this with fairly minimal mods seems like a good way to ease back into it. Sign me up for an AMT 1967 Impala. It looks like a nice kit. Lots of detail. I think my mods will be a wheel and disc brake upgrade, a scratch-built EFI intake on the kit 427, and some headers. Paint will be the real challenge.

but it will be the 2JZ from the AMT Supra.

Just a heads up on that 2JZ. I put one in the AMT Pacer wagon for the Cannonball some years ago. You will find the twin turbo set up is plumbed backwards. Some sort of error on the kit designer's part.

I recommend perhaps redesigning the intake for a large singe turbo than the tiny litle ones that come with the kit.

Rob, is this a current Round 2 release? I noticed it might have come out a couple of months ago and it looked like, besides being Ala-Kart only, it had much of the original tolling with the larger motor molding and some suspension differences and possibly pad printed tires and chrome wheels.

The first Ala Kart is the one I built in 1966, no paint (didn't have the extra 69 cents for a spray can) but I did add red pinstripes.

The second is the re-done issue from 20 years ago. I built it as a highboy with Ardun heads and pearl white paint.

Bernard, I assume so. I got it from my LHS. Thanks for posting your work, as always it's hot rod gold.

    Howard, I dig the highboy.

  9. I just picked up the latest release, and believe it or not, this is the first time this kit has ever found its way into my stash. If you are familiar with my work at all, you know I'm sure as heck, not going to build it as an Ala Kart.

So, in the spirit of creativity and imagination, please show us what else you guys did with the kit. Gotta get the creative juices flowing!
