  1. Very nicely done!  I built this one and ha ve another in the ‘stash’.  My chassis was not warped but  I haven’t looked at the second one.  I will say this is the best AMT kit that I have built.

Just getting a little tired of all these paint issues.

Amen to that!  It seems like I spend more time stripping paint than building.  Maybe someday I’ll learn to lay down a smooth coat of paint consistently but so far it still eludes me.  Looking forward to watching your next build if this one is taking a break back in the box.

  3. I have admired the quality of your builds and find it interesting that you took an approach of build, build, build to hone your skills and craftsmanship as that has been my approach since I became fully engaged in the hobby a few years ago.  I certainly don’t produce anything near the quality of your work but I’m seeing improvement.  I can’t fault the quality of this build (or your photography) and enjoy getting an historical perspective on the development of a master builder’s skills.

  4. To the best of my memory my first model car was "the Deuce" a 1932 Model B Ford from AMT in 1959.  I was 8 years old at the time and my oldest sister who always had an interest in art and painting helped me assemble it.  I'm pretty sure we didn't paint it but I seem to recall applying decals.  A few years later I had more success building the Visible V8 which I found tremendously informative in the operation of the internal combustion engine.  I've built models off and on over the years but only since retirement in 2016 have I become immersed in the hobby.

As others have mentioned, use a Retarder. I use the Tamiya one. Makes a big difference - the paint flows on much better and doesn't dry as fast. I was originally not a big fan of Tamiya acrylics - until I started using their retarder which changed my whole experience. Painting over Primer is also advised.

    Hallo Bart,
What is your ratio of paint to retarder?  I have some Tamiya retarder and need a starting point for trying this.

    Thanks,

    Andrew

Couldn't tell you for sure about that particular primer as I've never used it.

Could be that it's too hot.

These are the ones that I use.

    Steve,
Do you decant the Dupli-Color primer and airbrush it or shoot straight from the can?

    Thanks,

    Andrew

  7. Sure looks good to me!  I have this one in the stash and it is working its way up to the front of the queue. Can you comment on some of the problems I might encounter with this kit?

    Thanks,

    Andrew

There’s a very good chance we were in the Philippines at the same time.  Though I never made it to Clark we were in and out of Subic Bay many times in that 1972-1976 time frame.

  10. In response to the original question; currently I'm neither.  I would have to describe myself as an assembler that hopes to continue to develop the skills to consider himself a builder.  As for collector, nah.  I've never seen the point to collecting stuff just to have it though I suppose a well themed collection can have historical and educational value.
