This kit took the most time in my latest building blast. But still only one week and the extra time was due to I changed my mind on the color. It was silver first but i just didn’t like it so I changed it to red. Next the interior took some time due to all the masking to get the classic Porsche tri color seats. Finally even though I said I would accept the models as is faults and all I just could not live with the seam on the wing. I had to fill that. But I only gave it one shot. Putty, sand, paint and live with the result. It was a fun build.

This is an old Tamiya kit. This was part of my speed building but took a little longer due to all the masking for the trim painting. Painting all the lens took a while too.

I was feeling really down on models. I have three stalled projects that have come on and off my bench for over a year. I decided to round up a handful of basic kits and just knock them out in a hurry. Four kits in two weeks, I just accepted them as is. It was a lot of fun! I think i am ready to restart or more likely take on a new more involved project. Speed Racer is first up. I started this Friday night and it was done by Sunday night.

I appreciate all of the great advice. Using all my newfound knowledge I put down a pretty good white paint job. Then the clear coat did not go so well. I used Createx paint and clear. I was very happy with the paint and wish I would have taken a picture to share, Instead I thought I would wait until after the clear and show off a great paint job. The results are acceptable, mainly because this has been in process for over a year. At some point I have to finish it.

I just bought this kit last weekend. I bought it because I am a big fan of the body style. After reading your write up I feel like I got a hidden treasure. Looking forward to following your build.

This was my first attempt at a big rig. I started the build with a completely different idea, I kept changing my mind as the build progressed. I’m glad I went with the hot rod approach. I’m very happy with it. Being my first big rig there was a pretty steep learning curve involved. I have learned a lot things to not do again. I chopped up the body a lot and printed a number of items for it. The wheels and tires, grill and mirrors are the visible 3-D printed items. The engine has a couple items I had to print. Not because I wanted to, but due to the kit missing a few engine parts. It was easier to replicate them via printing, then going through the hassle of trying to get a replacement part from AMT. I have had three different paint jobs on this one. First was a dark red/brown color, it was just too much truck for that color. Then it was blue but I ruined that one with the clear coat, in truth I always questioned that color, and finally the black metallic.

A lot of good advice. I will let you know how my next white paint job turns out.

Thanks for all the advice. I typically use an airbrush. The current body I’m working on has gone through three paint jobs. I put down a white primer in each scenario. The three paints I have used have been ammo, Vallejo and Tamiya. The Tamiya was a bottle of the X2 white thinned with Tamiya thinner. in each case as well as with previous white paint jobs the final color always ends up being boring. I’m trying to get a nice crisp shade of white. A bright white. For some reason I can accomplish this with other colors, but the white always ends up just blah. I think I’m going to try buying a can of Tamiya white spray paint and see if that gives me better results. I don’t know if the attached images convey the issue. Those are the results with with Tamiya white.

Does anybody have any tips for getting a quality white paint job. I’ve never been able to produce a body in white that I actually liked. Does anybody have any paint or technique recommendations to get in a good white paint job? I have a couple kits on the shelf that I really want to build, but since I want to finish them in white they keep sitting. Thanks for any and all advice.

Just finished this one. This is a pretty much box stock AMT Chopped T. The big difference is I printed out the engine, transmission and exhaust. Overall I’m very happy with the results.
