You have an excellent attention to detail. I really like the "clean" areas around the door handle where hands would brush off the dirt upon entry. The soiled area at the lower section of the grab handle is also quite authentic. This is truly a work of art. -

Welcome, and bring those customs on. I'd like to see what you do with the big rigs. -
Going Green and Aero

That's a great start. When the Kenworth T600s first came out, I heard a lot of complaining about how the road grime was funneled right up to the windshield. Is this just talk from people who couldn't stand change, or was there anything to it. If there was a problem, how did they address it? -

How are you proceeding on this truck. Your changes aren't in my taste, but that'e just personal. I think you're going to have a fine truck when you're done. I drove dirt track stock cars back in the seventies, so I expect you to place a proper dirt tracker on it. LOL -

People talk of "raising the bar" for quality. Your truck IS the bar. -
Why I'm on here.
The Modeling Hermit replied to Helipilot16's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I agree with Harry. Why are you telling us this. I'm a "Mormon", but that has no bearing on my ability to build models. I come here and to other forums to see the artistic work of others. It's none of my business, or that of anybody else, what others religious or political views are. Don't ask-don't tell is usually the best course to take in matters such as this. If one does make mention of their beliefs, then one has placed themselves into the position of judgment. We will have no way of knowing if one don't say anything. -
I get real tired of this constant bombardment of anti-environmental bills. It's this type of thing that makes those of us who are environmentally conscious look bad. There's a difference between the greenies and the environmental friendly. The greenies like to do things that will be a big show, but have minimal impact on them. This is what I sent to Oregon. The state of Oregon is about to become involved in a discussion on a measure to restrict tire use to OEM tires. This will be based on a rolling resistance calculation. It is very important that this bill be not passed. This will limit freedom of commerce. It will also be not possible to legally administer this law, as this is regulated by the federal government. Also one must remember that there is NO such thing as an OEM tire. They're all made by the aftermarket. This bill also is against us environmentalists. It takes away the focus on such things as mass transit and alternative transportation (such as walking). I will be watching this subject with great interest. I am becoming fed up with all of these ANTI-ENVIRONMENTAL bills that are proposed by "show-environmentalists. That's those who are doing things that show, but have little or no impact on them or the environment. At the same time, their victims, those of us who are actual environmentalists, take the flack for their actions. If you want to do something about the environment, improve mass transit and educate people to use it, or get off your lazy duffs and walk. Leave the automobiles alone, that's just a magician's smoke and mirrors. It is a false statement to say that this bill is environmental. It is therefore, dishonest and illegal right from the beginning. I'm encouraging everybody I come in contact with to watch what is happening with this bill. What happens in one state has a tendency to move to other states. I'm from Alaska, and I'll be using the outcome of this to educate people here to know what their legislators are doing to them. We trust these people to do what's best for us, and yet we get this kind of bills. I have children and grandchildren that have to live in this world, and it's important to make sure that what's left to them is as pure as possible. That's why I'm encouraging everybody to fight ANTI-ENVIRONMENTAL issues such as yours. H.B. 2186 is not an environmental bill. Douglas Long

Matt, thanks. I strained my brain and just could not think of the name of that rear axle. It must have been one of those senior moments that I'm having way too often. LOL -

This is from memory of a truck that I saw in the seventies. The front rear axle was the only one that was powered. The far rear axle was on it's own springs, and was simply square tubing, and had no brakes on it. I think it only had three springs, and each one was substantially shorter than the one above it. Remember that this is a thirty some year old memory, from something that I only saw once. The crew that owned it was parked next to our car, and they had a flat, so I got to watch them fix it. The hub looked much like a disk brake rotor, but only contained the studs for mounting the tire, and that's all. What was more prominent was the tire rack mounted on the front of the box. The box was shaped much the same as what you have, but there was a framework tire rack that sat above the front of the racecar, and overhung the roof of the truck. I wish I could remember it better, but I hope that helps. -

Uwe, your timing couldn't have been better. I.m involved in a restoration of an old GMC. Much of what I'm doing is the same as what you've already done. This will be a big help towards my restoration. You've done an excellent job on your truck. I find this also interesting as I have two children that work for Safeway, and one who's now in the Navy that used to work for the company. Thanks for sharing your work with us. -

Clay, be safe. At least emotions are better now than when I was in Viet Nam. I got spit on in an airport when I arrived back in the U.S. Thanks for your service to our country. -

Why it's good to build models
The Modeling Hermit replied to Mike's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I find it interesting in my family, that my boys have little or no interest in models, while my wife and my youngest daughter have built some very nice models. This is my youngest daughters first conversion from a 2 door to a 4 door. She was only 14 at the time. Come on out of the closets women. This is a clean hobby that's great for all of the family. -
Winter is here...and it sucks
The Modeling Hermit replied to VW Dave's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
We're getting our usual winter here. It's 40 and raining. I don't think I could handle living in the midwest anymore. The winters are too cold and the summers are too hot. -
You did a nice job of weathering the car. It looks like it's from the southwest.
