So I am making a two piece mold to cast tires. I placed the tire in modeling clay and created the bottom mold. I then I removed the clay and created the top mold. But I guess I didn`t use enough mold release or something, and now the top part and bottom part of the mold are stuck together in spots it appears. Is there a way to break these parts apart nicely without cutting? I was debating using the freezer method that breaks apart glued styrene, but thought I would see if anyone here has any thoughts.
Thanks.

That looks great!
Is that really Testors spray enamel black from the can? Or did you shoot it through an airbrush?

Thanks guys.

Thanks guys!
One caution for anyone thinking about getting the IROC kit. Lots, and I mean LOTS of changes needed to be made to make it correct.

Any other thoughts guys?

WHAT TYPE OF WHEEL ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?
It`s actually the tires I am looking for. I already have the wheels. The tires need to be about 1 and 1/8" to 1 and 3/16" (28.575mm to 30.1625mm) inner diameter, and 1 and 5/8" (41.275mm) outside diameter, and about .75" (19.05mm) wide. I think just about any type will do, as long as they fit.

Thanks guys.
Karl, unfortunately almost all of the Jada die casts have what appear to be 20" or above tires with very little sidewall. The 1:1 car has 18" wheels with about 4" of sidewall.
Any other ideas?

I know this is a long shot, but I am looking for a set of tires for my latest project in 1/16 scale. They need to be about 1 and 1/8" to 1 and 3/16" (28.575mm to 30.1625mm) inner diameter, and 1 and 5/8" (41.275mm) outside diameter, and about .75" (19.05mm) wide. I am thinking there might be something close in RC or die casts, Any suggestions?

I just had some parts printed from Shapeways in their "Frosted Extreme Detail" material. Do any of you guys have experience trying to make a mold from a part made from this stuff? It is only 3.5mm thick, and I have heard that this stuff can be brittle. So I am worried about losing it in the mold and shattering into pieces trying to get it out. Lately I havent been using mold release. But I have used baby powder in the past, and am thinking of using that again. Thoughts?

Whoaaa!!
I am in trouble. I will be buying multiples of this one!
Some observations:
First, I am *very* surprised to see full Trans Am lettering. I was not expecting that at all. I am building the old Trophy Series Turbo Firebird, and all of the letters to spell "Trans Am" are scattered throughout the decal sheet. I guess as long as "Trans Am" isn`t on the box art, they dont have to worry about licensing for the name? The springs for the working front suspension are still there, which is interesting. The snow flake wheels and the tires appear unchanged compared to the Trophy Series kit, which is good IMO. The tail light panel is not correct, just like the old kit.
I am really loving the decal options in 3 colors!!!

Whoops, it didn't even dawn on me that the old kit was a Mach 1. Hopefully they'll fix the droopy headlights while they're at it.
Whoa. This is great! And with confirmation from Revell that the front end has been addressed??! Very great!
Hopefully they will really nail it with the front end. It will be a nice kit if so. It would be nice if they would update those shallow wheels too.

David, I'm pretty sure you could be referred to as the camaro/firebird king! I LOVE that 1/8 scale iroc you did. And I've definitely eyeballed that yellow formula. But all your F bodies are amazing. I need to get another 1/8. Is that the 1/16 iroc you posted also? I've seen the 1/16 bird for cheap, and I've found the 1/16 berlinetta. And also the trans am but can't find a 1/16 iroc to save my life. Great entries man!
Thanks! Yeah, the dark red one is the 1/8 kit, and the bright red is the 1/16 scale kit. If you decide to build the 1/16 kit, there are alot of issues with it. I have a thread on it here somewhere....

All of your builds are amazing, but this one is just talking to me. I love it.
Thanks! That is one of my favorite kit, and was the one that started it all for me back in `83. I remember getting it for $4.99 at Kaybee.

Whoaaaaa! Very nice!

Hoping for a re-issue!
Not sure if some of you remember the write up on that kit in the "other" magazine back in `94 I believe. Supposedly there is a second generation Camaro kit on the inside? The kit instructions (which were apparently a joke as much as the box art) included a Japanese section for "good will."

Thanks again everyone!
Kelson:
Thanks for posting that picture. Now that I see that, I do remember seeing it sitting on the shelves a loooong time ago, probably when it was new. I`d like to find one of those. I can see most of it was carried over to the Iroc, at least body wise.

Has anyone seen this one yet? It was in their September video, but I am not seeing it anywhere.
-
Looks amazing! Did you also build the 1/8 IROC a while back in the dark red metallic?
I noticed that you changed the transmission itself to represent the automatic, but neglected to change the shifter and pedals as well?
Yep! Here is the "big" kit:
About the shifter....
The kit came with the 5 speed and I built it that way. You can see that in the second interior picture. Then I discussed it with the person who will be getting this, and his is an automatic. So I had to tear the console apart and convert it to automatic, which you can see in the first interior picture. That is it`s current state.
Thanks everyone!

That is some great workmanship David. It's great to have the knowledge of the one-to-one to go by, and the skills to carry it off as you did.
When I built mine back in the day when they were new. I did not deal with the inaccuracies of the kits. I have most of the kits of that series in various states of assembly down in the basement. None of them look anywhere as good as yours. Last year, I restored my Iroc Z. I just cleaned it up and polished it. I found my '82 Z28 kit. I cut the roof off of it to build a replica of a convertible conversion that we had at our dealership since it was moulded in Red, and my Demo was White. I believe the roof I cut off, and the rear window are in my pile of parts. I found some of them, and if I am able to find it, I would like to convert it back into a Hardtop. The lower stripe decals would be hard to recreate after I strip the enamel paint I did in late '83, but it would be an interesting build. If I cannot find the parts, I'll just freshen it up like I did to the Iroc Z. I did the '84 Berlinetta as a Street Machine with an Injected V8 and American 200S wheels and different tires. I found the Replica Stock wheels and tires, and the Air Cleaner, carb, and Manifold., so it can be rebuilt to something close to being a Replica Stock Camaro. The paint can be polished out, and I can scratch build a spoiler cap that has been missing since I built the model in 1985. .I have an unbuilt MPC '82 Firebird T/A with a broken "A" pillar somewhere in my basement that I may still resurrect.
I have always liked 1/16 kits. I have several in the collection to be built from a new kit, or restored from my collection, as I never tossed them out, and they were not built as Glue-Bombs.
That is one fantastic Iroc Z David.
Thanks Ron, and thanks for sharing the memories! I`m not sure if you know, but the MPC `82 Firebird kit is available now as a re-release. I debated getting one, but I am too back-logged.
I vaguely remember Revell doing a Z28 in 1/16 either just before or just after the Berlinetta, but I can`t find any info on it. Do you remember what color the car on the box was?
I too got the 1/16 GTA kit for Christmas back when they first came out. Ah, the memories.
That was a good time. That one had some inaccuracies as well, but at that time I didn`t care. I built it in black. A few years later I got tired of the black and painted it charcoal with a brush. :D

Thanks for posting these!
I have to get at least one of this kit. I really like the decal options, and am really impressed to see we have real Trans Am lettering not spaced out all over the sheet.
The only thing I wish they would have included would be the turbo parts from the Trophy Series version...and maybe the lights.
But this is great, none the less.
