Here are a couple of pics of the cruiser. It's the USS Canberra CG-2 circa 1968. It took about two months to build. -
Mayflower Chevy Titan and trailer

Hi Jim: Some of them are huge, but some like my 4 Coast Guard cutter are only a little over two feet long. The guided missile cruiser is 51" long. Here is a link to my Rail images album. All the ships are on there except ice breaker Westwind. I've got it built but not painted. http://www.trainboard.com/railimages/useralbums.php Cheers: Bill -
Mayflower Chevy Titan and trailer
bitner replied to bitner's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Thanks guys: No problem Dave, I think I have about 34 completed and around 7 trailers. When I get bored with trucks, I switch over to my N scale model railroad, or scratch building warships in 1/160 scale. Cheers: Bill -
This is the latest moving van added to the collection. I built the tractor while I was working on the dump truck. It's the reissue Titan, with a shortened frame and the rear suspension and rear end out of a Ford Louisville kit. i built the truck off of a photograph on the web. The decals on the truck are mostly made by me. The colors are Tamiya Camel yellow and British green. The trailer is the original issue Mayflower van with after market decals.

This is the newest truck in my collection. It's a GMC 1961 dump truck lettered for Weyerhaeuser, Longview, Washington. It started out as the cab and interior from a 1960 Chevy Fleet side pickup. I modified the grill area, and enlarged the fender wells. I added fender flairs from Evergreen strip and 1/4 round. The frame is scratch built from Evergreen channel styrene, with Grandt Line bolts. The rest of the truck is made up of the following parts: Ford Louisville front axle and dump bed. Ford C series front rims, and rear mudflaps, horns Dodge l-700 fuel tanks Kenworth rear ends and rear suspension American La France front springs rear tires from an Ertl Transtar Rear rims from a Great Dane trailer Home made decals clearance lights from a snap Peterbilt Its painted with Tamiya Camel yellow and British green. It was a fun project, I've always liked these trucks and was wondering how hard it would be to convert an existing kit into one. The hood is not quite right for a GMC but it is close enough. It is a curbside model for now until I can find a suitable engine to put in it. The pickup kit only have a straight six motor if I recall.

This is the latest Ford. I was building this the same time as the C series tanker. I used the chassis and engine of a Ford snowplow, with the rear wheels from an Astro. The cab is a resin one I purchased online. I made a mold of a resin sleeper master, and cast the one that I added to the rear of the cab. I made most of the decals on the tractor, with the trailer decals being aftermarket with the exception of the Trailmobile plates, and the moving company name. I'm not real happy with the paint on the trailer but it will do. I'll get some better pictures of it outside later on. I'm hoping to add an ALV GMC Crackerbox tractor in the near future to go with this one.

This is my latest creation, I used a Ford mail tractor and stretched the frame. The tanker body, rear storage bin, and equipment boxes are scratch built. I also made all the decals except the #29s and the one decal on the right rear. I used the front wheels off an AMT fire engine, and the rear wheels are from the Peerless log trailer. I used Tamiya orange for the cab, and Camouflage grey for the lower body and chassis. It came out better than I expected. Not being a real fan of this truck, I have to admit I'm starting to like it.

Here is my latest, A Georgia Pacific cab over with a set of doubles. I built it off of a picture I found. I used home cast resin wheels on the truck, and heavily modified a set of AMT vans for the trailers. The GP decals on the truck cab are from an aftermarket set, and the rest of the markings are home made by me.

This is I believe the 1977 issue of this cabover from Matchbox. I stretched the frame and added home cast resin rear drivers to it. I made the Sherman Brothers decals from a picture of their logo off the net. They are a heavy haul company based just north of Eugene, OR on I-5. I built the truck to represent one of the ones I used to see in the late 70's as a kid. It was really fun masking off those stripes. I also scratch built a new headache rack and some resin tool boxes. The trailer is the reissue ERTL extend frame Great Dane trailer. I added wheels from an AMT Peerless logging trailer instead of using the kit rims. In addition the beam load is from several of the AMT kits.

gas turbine GMC Astro FINISHED
bitner replied to bitner's topic in Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Here is the finished truck. I love the paint scheme they chose for this truck. I used the 30+ year old kit decals on it after cutting them to match the prototype more closely. -

Hi Dave: The paint scheme is the prototype one. Surprisingly, AMT had it done right on the box art for the cab. -

Here's the latest pics. I have the turbine installed in the frame, and have the cab almost completely painted. It was fun masking off those stripes, thank god for Tamiya masking tape. -

Here are a few more pics of the truck in progress. I have the base coat of white on the frame, but no detail painting done. Also the engine is painted, but still has a little work needed before installation. -
This is my latest project, the old AMT gas turbine powered GMC Astro. I've found a small amount of reference on it, and have incorporated it into the kit. I lengthened the frame, and added an Astro-Glide suspension to it from parts as per the prototype. I love that gas turbine engine. I have a couple more of these kits and I'm probably going to have my dad cast a few of the turbines up so I can build a couple of the White Freightliner cabover turbines when the kit is reissued later this year.

1971 Autocar lowboy tractor
bitner posted a topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
I finished this last fall, and finally took pictures of it. I Made the tractor out of the AMT Autocar dump truck, with the headache rack from an Alaskan Hauler Kenworth. It's painted for Oldham Crane out of the Eugene/ Springfield area of Oregon. I scratch built both jeeps on the lowboy and cast most of the wheels. I also added a new goose neck to the AMT lowboy. -
1965 Autocar logging truck FINISHED
bitner replied to bitner's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Here's the final product. It came out pretty good. I added older style clearance lights to the cab. I hand painted the name on the door to match the photos I have. Any comments are welcome. My dad made the General mudflaps for me from a pattern he had made and then he cast them in rubber. I had to use the newer Autocar logos because I couldn't find a picture of the older Autocar Diesel emblem that should be on the A model conventional. -

Here are a couple of pics of the truck. I still have a lot to do. The cab and hood are just sitting on the frame and not glued down. I cast all the wheels on the truck. I used an AMT trailer, but made a new reach and trailer body for it because the reach in the AMT kit is way too small. -

Here's the finished Pa Pa Truck. It came out better than I thought considering how old the decals were. -

Thanks guys: Ben I was going to use the ones I got from you, But I don't want to use them until I can get some Alcad or somehow get them chromed. The wheels I used were modified 5 hole steel wheels from the International dumptruck. The truck is about 99% finished, so I'll post picks soon. -

I believe the kit is from around 79 or 80. I also have the Hideout truck kit to build also. They are and interesting change of subject.
