I'm thinking of making a Winnebago and I'd like to use something like this. Years ago someone sold this sort of plastic in larger sheets, like 12x24 or so. It has raised lines on it and would look pretty close to the stuff used on a 1:1 Winnie. I bought some when building a spaceship for a failed low budget local TV show. Now that I'm looking for it, I can't find it anymore. Am I just overlooking it?

I keep a copy of the Evergreen catalogue on my laptop. It is still listed. The product code for the 12" x 24" sheets is 14109.

Thanks for the replies.  I was just curious if one could get a decent build without painting.

I believe you have the answer to this, illustrated in the pictures posted of Harry Pristovnik's Ducati and Tom Andrukaitis' Tasca Ford Thunderbolt. In my eye, neither of these has a toy-like appearance. We don't have pennies in Canada, so I guess that is my nickel's worth LOL

I gotta get me one of gallery air brushes....

Although it looks the same, it is not a Gaahleri airbrush. It is a DragonAir Model DA04 Airbrush 0.5mm trigger action. I'm not sure if this is a private branded product for SMS.

I bought two of the Gaahleri trigger style airbrushes, a GHAD-68 and a Swallowtail. I really like them both. If you go with a Gaahleri, the Swallowtail would be my recommendation.

Apparently the tooling package came with some large degree of intellectual property such as artwork, instruction illustrations, etc. One such example of box art images that were recycled from the Revell release was the Allison Prop Jet Kit. The B-24, B-25 & B-36 kits are another. I thought I saw one post from Atlantis on Facebook that was a kit proposal design that did not make it to production, so it can be presumed that they also received much of the engineering documentation as well.

Thanks for sharing that new-to-me information. You're right about the new illustration styling being uninspiring. In spite of that, I still purchased the Mooneyes and Yellow Fever kits.

That box art proposal is AWFUL. I can't help but think that it is holding kit sales back on the Keeler's Kustoms subject matter, and Atlantis might have done well with their initial strategy of utilizing slightly revised original Revell artwork as they did with their aircraft/military/space kits a few years back. Use the portrait of the Scarlet Screamer, retouch the image a digital program to reflect the Pontiac engine they are using, and let the rest of the box art be reminiscent of the 1963 double kit.

Curious, how would Atlantis have access to Revell copyright artwork?

  6. If you can possibly find a disposable clear plastic spoon. You might be able to modify it so as to come close to matching the curvature of the Badman hood scoop. Another option is to find the fairly recent reissue of the Monogram '55 Chevy Bel Air Street Machine 2' n 1. It has all of the Badman parts, although the clear parts are clear, not clear red.

  7. I understand the logic behind the lip that Tamiya includes on the back-edge of their one piece wheels. The appearance to me is overly thick. The wheel on the right is original and the wheel on the left has been sanded down to eliminate the lip.

Here are all four wheels with the lips removed.

I really appreciate the detail and appearance of Tamiya tires right out of the box. The material Tamiya uses has a realistic "rubber-like" appearance. And of course the Pirelli detail is a bonus. This is an older boxing, so I'm not sure if this is still the case with more recent issues.

The bottle of Splash Paint clear says mix ratio 3=1 The catalyst has nothing on the label. Same info on the website

    Mike

I have the same Splash 2 part clear as well. The bottle of the clear itself, I believe is twice the size of the catalyst. Since it is Splash's product, then yes it is three parts clear to one part catalyst. Make the mixture first and then thin to a good consistency for airbrushing. Wise words from Mark indeed. Use good ventilation and wear a respirator mask if you have one.

  9. Yesterday I finally got around to finishing the disc brake face drilling. Doing this with a pin vice and a 0.3 mm bit is risky at best. That size of bit is so easy to break! So I thought that I'd give it a try with my Tamiya battery powered drill. My only issue with the Tamiya drill is that the screw that holds the body shell halves together, up near the drill aperture, is not tight enough to keep the two halves firmly together. Keeping this area snug is important, as this is the area of the drill that contains the gearing and the drill chuck. I did not want to risk tightening the screw any further. There is the risk that the metal screw might strip out the plastic. So, I came up with another idea to hold the two body shell pieces tightly together, a nylon zip tie.

  10. The Michael's stores in my area have a separate glassed-off room near the front of the store which could be reserved by different interest groups. We used to have our model club meetings there. That was before circumstances changed, as outside public gatherings were no longer viable. When attending the meetings, I would always spend money/use a coupon. I checked the model section, but the selection for car models was mediocre at best. Instead, I would use my coupon to get artist's grade paint bushes or acrylic paints ( I really like Golden or Liquitex acrylic products! ). The store has never reinstated the use of the room by outside groups. From what I've been told, the space is now just used as a stock room. As others have shared, Michael's pricing policy is such that using a 40% off coupon (only 1 item) would get you a moderate bargain price. I don't think they even offer the 40% coupons anymore. Basically I have lost all interest in shopping for anything at any Michael's locations.

I just looked up the NNL East event for this year and I’ll have to plan on next year. It’s a 13 hour drive for me and I need time to plan and save (cause I know I’ll come home with more 😈) and need to schedule vacation time for the trip.

Trust me Keith, if you get the opportunity, it is well worth it. The participants, the number of models on the tables, the vendors, the professionalism of the Tri-State Club members who are behind the event. I believe the Diversified Scalerz are also heavily involved as well. You will come away with plans in your head for another future attendance.

  12. I don't know if Wayne, NJ would constitute in my area, after all I live in Toronto, ON. I have been fortunate enough to travel with great friends to the NNL East. For me this started back when the event was in its final years in Parsippany, NJ. Hotel accommodations have been booked for this year and I am really looking forward to it. Long live my favourite NNL !

Have you heard of Girl Math? That's where she rationalizes a purchase, I think. How about Modeler's Math?

So, yesterday we went down to Austin to see our first grandbaby and I had to stop at the nearby HobbyTown. I got the supplies I needed and looked at the car kits for a while. I love German stuff, so I got the Mercedes. That brought my total close to almost $90. That's where Modeler's Math came in.

I remembered I had a coupon for $20 if you spend $100, so I got some more Plastruct I might need some day. Now I had a free $20 to spend so I picked up the GTR kit I'd sort of wanted for a while.

With Modeler's Math, it only cost me $7, right?

The Lamborghini came from my wife's stop at Hobby Lobby for yarn. I didn't need it, but it was too tempting to pass up. I can resist anything except temptation.

I really like that Tamiya Calsonic Skyline GTG-R. From the headlights, it appears to be an R33. With some of the racing GT-Rs, Tamiya didn't alwsays identify what the specific model was. That Mercedes is pretty darned good as well! Your Math makes perfect sense to me.

  14. This morning my good friends Peter (Penetanguishene, ON) and Ken (Perth, ON) converged on one of our favourite LHSs, Dailey Hobbies (Whitby, ON). I had some kits to pass along to Ken. The store, much to my chagrin/delight, had some extraordinarily good prices on some Hasegawa kits. Needless to say, I couldn't resist and came home with three. As well, Peter asked if I had a set of these. He was referring to the the drill bit set pictured. When I said no, he told me then these are for you. I am lucky to have such great friends.
