'32 Ford Sedan Project
Crazy8 replied to Crazy8's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
ATTN: Moderators Im thinking this could probably be moved to the "on the bench" area since I will be posting pictures of the build and updating this project as I move along. Well I decided to undo all the work I did and to do it the right way, or so its how I was seeing it as being the right way. So here is where I am at now. Top Back Its not absolutely perfect which is what I strive for but its 100 times better than what it was. I hope from here on out I can finish it off and make it look as good as I have been imagining. Only my second model and my first "custom" with the chopping and all that so Im kind of surprised I didn't make it worse. Put i also think about what I do 100 times and how to do it before I do anything that might not be reversable...lol Is there a method or a "right way" to do chop tops with no or little issues? -
Well I finished a few more details. Still working on it and bringing it all together. Just a few more touches and the body can go onto the car for good. I put the hood on just so you could see what it will look like. Not its not wet, it is that shiny. I can actually see my reflection. I cant wat to polish and wax it. The lenses for the lights I wasn't exactly please with because the shape of them was off just enough to not look right or fit perfectly and not sure there was anything I could do and just putting them on was one less headache to deal with. The side I was going to paint the flat area around the pipes since thats how it is on the 1:1 but I just decided not to.

Anyone have a '32 ford body from this kit that they would be interested in selling? My chopping might have gone a little better if I could find my $250 calliper I used to have. I know I moved into our new house with it but now I cant find it anywhere. -

Well I have started on my car and after much thinking on how I wanted to exicute a few things I started by chopping the top. Though my cuts were strait, I think I may have slightly messed it up somehow. Anyway I have decided to move forward and to make it look the best I can thought its not perfect and not sure if I can deal with that..lol Im also trying to figure out how to drop the chassis. I have seen some 32's use different front suspenion which may be helping in this but I want my 32 loooooow. Not touching the ground but low. I have done a lot of sanding to the body to remove exces filler after the chopping. I will post pictures asap. -

Well I already got the OK from the wife to get it as a wedding anniversary gift to myself...lol Our first wedding anniversary is Sunday . Anway Maybe I will see what the kit engines look like. Im not really particular on injected or carburated, so long as it looks cool. I just saw that engine and was like wooooooooo...lol Thanks for the pointers and who knows maybe I will stick with one of those two engines. I also only mentioned the chevy red witht he chevy engine just for detail sake but I may paint the engine red regardless. -
So Im going to beg the wife if I can stop by the hobby shop to pick up my 32 ford and some supplies I still need for my Ferrari. So I was wondering if I could get some input. I have an idea what I want to do but I still want to keep some of it under wraps. I have done just a little research on 32 Ford rods. Here is the kit I am thinking of getting... http://hobbytown.com...d-%282-in-1%29/ Now I have seen that 350's can go in the 1:1 so here is what I was thinking for the engine kit. http://stores.scaled...-Tpi/Detail.bok Q's 1) Will I be able to use this engine with this kit? 2) I have not found any assembled pictures of this engine, has anyone in here done one? 3) This is a Chevy engine correct? So it is safe to color it "chevy engine red" then? 4) Also any comments, advice, ideas for this build would be much appreciated. Thanks
-
Well I suppose the pics look pink but it is actually a real nice red. When I take better photos and maybe change the lighting, the color should come through better. whats funn is I can see Will Ferrell saying that entire line...lol

Thank you very much and I will be sure to post more a long the way.

Well last night I did some more work and even almost forgot to take more pics, but I did it. So last night I put on the decals and then one more coat of clear over them. It was also my first time seeing what Micro Set was able to do. I was going to put one more coat of clear on the hood but I was at the bottom of the can and got mist. Wasn't to happy about that so now my hood looks horrible until I get more clear. Well I will stop talking and show the candy. Look at her shine See that "Ferarri" decal right above the center tail light? Thats where the Micro Set came into play. The interior Full view Under the hood Wanted to see what my grill would look like before I glue it in. Without the body Some more shine and hand painted interior. Minus the decal in the center of the stearing wheel. Well I have learned a lot from this build and tried many things I have never done before. Some of the things I learned and experienced from this build... * Paint body exterior before painting under hood (assuming they are one peice) or any parts that are part of the interior attached to the body. * Do not hand paint entire chassis. Use spray instead. *All I had was a little jar of testors so thats what I used* * Let paint dry COMPLETELY before you work on them. Patience Patience Patience. * Put cap on Micro Sol when not using it so that you dont tip it and smell the area up like vinegar. * When spray painting, 1 maybe 2 less layers would have been better. This is one thing I knew and at one time most of the detail on the body looked perfect but I mad a mistake and had to add more paint. Of course I suspect this will less likely be an issue when I get my air brush and since you can target specific areas with paint. * Keep pushing myrself to try new things. After 20+ years and NEVER making a model that looked this good, trying new things, being creative, and attention to detail is what made it possible. Because of some of the mistakes I have made, I am able to correct some of them still so there is still some touching up to do but in the end this mdel looks great. Im thinking about giving it to my dad even. He was the one that got me started in it years ago and even has one of the many models I built back in those days in his office at home. I couldn't think of anything better than to give him my first one 20 years later that I built not just on my own, but also partially while spending time with my step son. I know its going to make that all black plastic drag car with porrly painted roll bars and exhaust look horrible...lol Hope you all enjoy the pics

It is ModelMasters "Flame Red" I couldn't find one that was close enough to the red that Ferarri is known for and thought this one would be an interesting try. The pictures really dont do it justice. When/if you ever see this color on the can its a bit darker than what it is on the car. I also did a white primer (intentionally) so that might have played a part in it. I think it looks awesome. Like I said I will take some pictures with my Canon XSi at some point and maybe that will capture the color better.
-
I did notice last night that I started to lose some of the detail in some spots. Im not getting to hard on myself though because im looking ta it like this... * Its been 20+ years and I have never even done a pint job like this * Im using spray paint but soon will be getting an Iwata air brush (thanks to Dr. Cranky ) which will help this * Over all, the paint does look great * I have had a few minor mishaps and have had to come back to add more paint * Its all part of the learning experience Thank you very much for your comments. i will be sure to put more pics up as I start coming to a finish on this one.

Well as some of you might now by now, I am rturning to the hobby after 20+ years. My dad and I used to do models when I was 10 or younger but never at the level that it is at now. So my first car I picked was the Ferarri California. For not adding wires or any kind of crazy detail so everything I did detail wise has been hand painted. I dont have beginning to end photos but here are the most recent ones of where the build is now. Mostly its my beautiful paint job. The engine and part of the cockpit Engine close up Wheel detail. First time using Micro Set also Now for that beautiful paint. Im not sure which ones were paint and first clear coat so I am going to just throw them up. Then lastly I will show you the 2nd clear coat and how pretty it looks. Now the second coat. Look at that blingin shine. You can see each LED from my lights in the reflection. Sorry for the really bad pictures. At the time my phone was very low on power and Im not sure if that had anything to do with it or not. Anyway I will be sure to take some good ones with my Canon XSi.

No not really. I have been thinking of shapes and stuff in my head. Part of me wants to do the Cadilac shape tail lights but that has been so over done in the last 15 years on every custom vehicle that Im really trying not to do something that has been over done. One shape I keep thinking and wondering about is a "bullet" type shape. Im still kind of kicking around ideas.
-
Ok so I have been seeing some of the customizing you all do, all the way down to making your own head lights and tail lights. I havent seen anything to in depth though and thus has left me with a few questions. As I have mentioned in other postings, I have a 32' Ford Sedan project that will be my next build and have a lot of little details I want to customize. One of those details are head lights and tail lights. So how does one go about creating his own lenses, even more so red tail light lenses? Thanks for all the help

GAH! I just can't do it.
Crazy8 replied to Jantrix's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Maybe if you kind of put yourself in a special mindset. The next build that you want to do box stock, just think "Whats in this box is all I have to work with and the manufacture considers this a "complete kit"." Im working on my first car in MANY years. Its a Ferarri Califronia and I might say it looks quite good for being either hand painted or brush painted and all the time I have put into the details also has come out great. That could be one way to get over your box stock blues. Take a car and do as much detail work as you can. Also since its an exotic car I dont think there is typically much wire or anything else that can be seen anyway. -
Styrene Sizes and Types
Crazy8 replied to Crazy8's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
WOW! Thank you all for your feedback. I greatly appreciate it. -
@Fastback. Its funny you mention all of that. I only got back into this hobby because my troubled stepson was wanting a model. So, like everything else I do, I went full bore and am teaching him a few things. not to mention it gets him and I some private time together and out of trouble so that all good. My wife makes fun of me because of all my hobbies...lol But shes more than willing to "take" my photography one. She is completely supportive of me and all my hobbies, it truely is a blessing.

Styrene Sizes and Types
Crazy8 replied to Crazy8's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Oh wow. thats awesome. Thanks for pinting that out and for that price you cant go wrong. I suppose with the peices in one hand and my caliper in the other hand along with usage, ill learn what seems to get used more. At least what I use more of...lol Thanks again for showing me that. Thats really an awsome little bag of goodies there. Cant wait to start my additciton and what better way to do it than have a nice big bag full of misc. styrene peices.....Mmmmmmmmm -
With my 32' Ford project I will be doing next, after my Ferarri California, I will be doing a lot of customizing and will be using a bit of styrene. Im just curious to know what are some of the more popular/used sizes of strene sheets, rods, tubes, etc. for 1/24 scale? Thanks

As of this coming Sunday (the 26th) I will have been married one year and I have already done my share of admitting to my wrong doings and I also know how hard that can be, especially when its not something you normally do or used to do. I also read the OP a day or two ago and thought the same thing, "That takes kahonas". I dont know what the issue was but any time someone can man up and say that he is sorry gets a big point in my book. Hope all goes well with the situation from here on out.

Well Im thinking lo-pros for the rubber and something kind of classic for the rims. Maybe rims like this... http://www.hobbylinc.com/htm/pgh/pgh2301.htm ...or something similar to this http://www.carsrun.com/the-retro-ma-de-spyder-inspired-by-the-legendary-porsche-550/ But with tires like this... www.hobbylinc.com/htm/pgh/pgh1198.htm Perhaps in some way by posting the links i may have answered my own question. But further more to the questioning, would I need to buy more than one set of tires w/rims just to get the tire/rim combo im looking for?
-
Is there a source or maybe a couple reliable sources that you all go to if your just looking for tires and rims? Im curious because I think with my 32' Ford Sedan project I want to do a unique set of wheels for the look I am going for. Thanks

Well I got some paint on the ferarri last night. I am using ModelMasters "Fire Red". I wasnt sure if it would look close to Ferarri red or not but it seemed like a cool color to try. Well it looks GREAT. I sanded the primer (1000) last night just to smooth it out then started to apply paint. I need to get another can to put on another layer or two, to also smooth out a few spots. Over all it looks great but the pictures dont help my case much. Anyway here is the candy. I also got a can of ModelMasters Ultra Gloss. I hope that once I get that on after the paint and then do a polish and wax that all of that will really make it pop. I still have not gotten any sand paper over 2000. How should I be doing my clearcoats/sandings? SHould I be doing 1 layer at a time and then sand with 1000,2000,and higher between each coat and maybe doing 4 or 5 coats total?

Well thank you all for the replies. @midnightprowler: That would be cool. Yeah I am not far at all. Im actually right in town even. i live on The Ponds golf course. I share a backyard with hole 2...lol Wait I'm sure there is a joke in there somewhere...lol @Dr. Cranky: Im sure she wont build but it would be cool to even just get input or build something where she makes all the choices. @diymirage: Nice car and lady Oh I remember whitesnake. lol @Mercman: Well thats still cool that the daughter builds. I havent been in the hobby long but it seems just as likely to find a woman mechanic, but always neet when you do.

Well I knew I was going to go to the local Hobby Town USA over the weekend, but I wasn't sure who was going to come with. Originally I asked my 18 year old step son but when it comes to 18 year olds, girls first bonding with parents last. So then I was also asking my wifes brother in-law who has been named my "BFF". Well my BFF was out fishing so I asked my amazing wife. Now could I have gone by myself? Of course I could. But its more fun to do things that include others and I especially love shoulder time with my wife. Well as we are walking through the hobby shop, my wife is perusing the isles and checking out some of the models. I was slightly shocked by this. I say only slightly because only about a week before while I (and eventually we) were watching Dr. Cranky's youtube videos on our TV she thought his dioramas were very cool. She also made a point that I showed people the "Breakfast of Champions part Eight" video so they could see how real and how awesome Cranky is at doing rusted out cars. Anyway back on the track here. When I noticed my wife not only looking but handeling the boxed models, I asked her somewhat jokingly, "would you like one?" lol Turns out she was really liking some of the muscle cars and commenting on how she wouldn't paint them the color that the picture was showing. I think after I do my huge 32' Ford project I may be having her pick out my next models and even help me with paint and stuff. I just thought it was kind of cool that the wife was actually kind of interested in this stuff. Most of my hobbies she has zero interest in al though she wants to "take" my photographing hobby for herself...lol
