Race cars paint jobs
David Thibodeau replied to ismaelg's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I agree with all here Ismael. as an avid Nascar modeler I like my cars to have perfect paint jobs and I use 2 part clear to achieve this. I dont clear over my decals normally unless they are ALPS unless the car I am modeling is a Superspeedway modern era car. I took a trip to Daytona in 2005 and Jeff Gordons 500 winner was there, the actual car and everything on that car was clearcoated, I mean ALL DECALS! I guess they really want those bodies slick at the SS tracks. I dont see a problem with trying to achieve a perfect finish. It is a huge debate on many boards but I have seen these cars in personand they are usually beautifully prepared machines and the paint does not lack a beautiful finish. My 2 cents, DaveT -

Welcome aboard "BAD" Buddy!!! -
Well, with the NOv NNL's in Atlanta around the corner I have decided to put away all projects and focus on getting this done.... here is a small update: Fire suppression system is installed, I used a detailmaster Fire bottle kit and hardware. The T fitting is from protech with craft wire for the hardline. Nozzles are DM #1 Combo fittings painted clear yellow. Here is the beggining of the ignition plate. Made from square evergreen rod with PE covers from the Dale Earnhardt Superdetail set. This piece wil be very detailed. DaveT

1970 Chevy Camaro Z-28 Pro Tour G machine
David Thibodeau replied to David Thibodeau's topic in WIP: Model Cars
I noticed the car had pearl which I had to add to my build.... the front nose was cleaned up but still could have fit better!! Here is the car with the stripe. I am contemplating adding the thin border stripe with black decal.... not sure if I will like it or leave it as is..... -
ANother "G-machine" I am messing with.... this one is based loosely on the 1972 Camaro that Detroit and speed built for Dale Earnhardt Jr. Real car beloe I am using the 19701/2 AMT kit which needs some work. I wish they had offered the Whale Tail option in the kit but they didnt. I went with the early 70 spoiler. The car was painted with PPG Hugger Orange with a pearl applied on top and 2 coats od dupont Chromaclear. Here is the stance I plan on achieving..... Wheels are pegasus with the centers painted gunmetal. The car will have a matching stripe in this paint once the cleat is polished and masked off for the gunmetal color. Here is an overhead shot to give you the pearl effect.... I will most likely ditch the kit engine and steal an LT1 from a corvette or camaro kit..... DaveT

Here is something I have been working on... I call it a 71 Charger GTS. Basically I am making this into a viper in a 71 charger body!! Here is what I have done so far...... Body painted in GTS blue with painted stripes. Dupont 2 part clear was used. Pegasus Chrome daddies are the wheel and tire of choice Finally.... the V-10 engine stolen from a GTS viper AMT kit. Hope you all like my vision so far!!! DaveT

This is more or less a little effort to make a curbside "close to the look" of Rhys Millen's 2004 GTO Drift ride. I saw Sean Svendson did one like this and I thought it was too cool to not build for myself. Here is the run down on details.... Tires and wheels from the Revell Tuner eclipse kit. Sparco seats from the kit as well Rear wing from scale auto style All CF from SAS as well Real aluminum exhaust. Pro tech seat belts Detailmaster steering wheel Hood pins from crazy modeler Modified suspension

Thanks guys.... Hookedonplastics..... The setup is quite simple... A barstool and a black t shirt draped over the stool..... thats it!!!!!!!!!!!! I discovered this while trying to satisfy Mr Hutchings with shots of my OCC style chopper he printed on the cover 5 issues ago.... I love it and do it to alot of "urban style builds" Thanks again DaveT

Its done.... a quick build of a foose style 1964 GTO. Only extras added were Protech plug wires and boots, Pro tech aluminum aircleaner, Pro tech Ignition coil, Rear exhaust using aluminum tubing, and the model car garage PE sheet for the car. Paint is PPG Firepearl red (ford color) and Pearl white followed by Dupont Chroma clear...... DaveT

1964 GTO Doing this for a co worker for her husband. The white is pearl white with the red top, hood, and trunk painted a Ford color called Red fire pearl. All this was cleared with Dupont clear. The gold stripe is decal. I added the model car garage P/E sheet to spice it up a bit. Here is the interior. Check out the keys in the dash. DaveT

OUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 8) -
Thanks guys... Got the dash completed over the weekend. It was made from making a template of the kit piece. I narrowed it a bit because of the new upper a pillar bars. I also unfortunately had to cut a notch in the dash face to accept the middle bar running into it. But it still looks super clean! I used JWTBM decals for the gauges. The bezels were made by machinworks indy..... All other details were added from various photo etch hardware...

Thanks guys.. I did a little more work over the past few days.... The rear axle and diff is hollow on the top side of the unit. This is not an issue with a boxstock build. But when adding the appropriate lines and detail you have to have a solid surface for the oil lines that cool the diff to attatch to!! Tamiya 2 part putty did the trick........ Jumping ahead here, the differential was primed and painted TS-29 and the diff was painted with a rust color from the acryl line of model master paints to simulate the red oxide the 1:1 diff covers are painted with. Since Cup cars have quick change rear ends, PRO TECH bolts were used to simulate the bolts on the diff. The entire unit was plumbed with Pro Tech .045 braided line and fittings. The gold collars are Crimp tubes from the craft section at Michaels. The pulleys were made by Clay Kemp. The brake rotors are from Model car Garage. The hubs were scratch built and Guitar string was used for the lug studs.
