Scale I Build

  1. Been awhile since I did a 1/12 car. Although I have done a few and there are more in the stash aIl have avoided them due to all the work involved. This one occupied the better part of two months. This is Tamiya,s 1/12 hi detail kit of the Ferrari 641/2. I also purchased the Perfect Parts set when I bought this kit in late 1992. Color on this is Tamiya LP21 Italian red which is very similar to TS-8. There arte many working features on this kit and they include working steering, removable nose and engine cover, removable wheels/tires and all the cooling, electrical, oil and fuel lines and lots of tiny photo etch nuts and bolts. I have included some pictures from the WIP to show off some of the detail. Here is a link to the WIP: Tamiya 1/12 Ferrari 641/2 - WIP: Other Racing: Road Racing, Land Speed Racers - Model Cars Magazine Forum. More3 information below the photos. This kit went together very well. It would have been a joy to do if I had just wanted to finish it box stock. Kit had many working features and I enjoy making things work. Business end of the Ferrari and the view competitors got to see 6 times during the 1991 season. Wing is held on with two screws and made this assembly a joy. Not so much for the wire wing stays though. Wheels steer through the steering wheel...a kit feature and well engineered. Marboro decals were not included and came from the spares. A lot of the kit parts wound up as spares as I fabricated many of them. The WIP gives more info on this. Seat fabric was part of the kit...a very cool feature. Seatbelt hardware came from the Perfect parts packet. Some of the extra detail on the left side. All the wiring and boxes are hand made. Those hose clamps and connectors were fun. Steering wheel is covered in embossing powder. Note all the tiny PE fasteners. Detail of the working front suspension and steering. Those shock strut units comprised of some 30+ seperate pieces. Completed chassis temporarily on its wheels. This was a major milestone and i took a couple days break before fitting the upper body. Thanks for looking and I hope you enjoyed this post. There is lots more in WIP. Feels free to comment.
  2. Tghis will be my very first post in the WIP section. This kit is special to me for a reason. A long time ago (35+ years) a fellow modeler asked me how many models I had completed. I told him about 300 or so. Since I had kept almost every one and they were all in display cases it would be easy to count. I came up with 298. This won't do. That weekend I finished two, one of them was a Mercedes 300SL. Since then I have kept all the box tops and numbered them. This particular build happens to be number 900. Not bad considering I have been building since 1963. Below are 3 pictures of what I will be up against and some more info. Da kit. Purchased this one as soon as it came out. As a Ferrari fan it was a gotta have. Started it right away and di a little pre4liminary construction with what I could at the time. then got discouraged. Next pic and you will see why. This is the Perfect Parts pack I purchased form F-1 Specialties around the same time. Tons of photo etch and extras. some very tiny and at the time way beyond my skill level. Here is all the rest of the parts all laid out. You can see some of the things I started. Wheels and tires, front nose and some of the metal suspension. Next up will be some serious parts sorting and notes. Should be interesting.
  3. Hi all, I am new to the forum and would like to introduce myself. I'm C.A.R, 28 year old male, from New York, and have been building 1/32nd aircraft for years. I would like to share my first F1 model car build with you. While I normally wouldn't venture into building cars myself, my 27 year old brother is a huge F1 fan and recently requested that I build something for him. When he showed me the Ferrari 641 in 1/12th scale, I had to oblige. I found the car gorgeous and the engineering of the 1/12th scale Tamiya kit to be an excellent starting point for a super-detailed build of Alain Prost's 1990 car. The biggest challenge (and expense) associated with building this model was somehow obtaining the two Perfect Parts detail sets (1. full set & 2. brakes), which have long been discontinued for at least 10 years and are extremely rare (several sets have sold on eBay for $200-$500 dollars each). Despite this, I was lucky to get both from a seller in England for $275 total. Though I have no way of knowing this, I suspect I bought one of the last unused sets in the world. I knew I had to work extra hard on this kit to do those rare detail sets (and my brother's build) justice. Regarding detail sets, the only other detail set supplier is a from a guy named Paul Raterink who runs Thundervalley F1. He turns out some impressive work but hasn't responded to my many emails. I initially tried to buy his stuff; when he didn't respond, I went on a wild goose chase globally to find the Perfect Parts sets. It was dumb luck that I was able to get both sets at the price I got them. As good as the PP sets are, they have inaccuracies. Mainly, the velocity stacks are completely inaccurate, as are the brake discs. Both are accurate for the McLaren Mp4/6, the Ferrari 641's rival car and counterpart Tamiya release in the early 1990's. I researched the car by traveling to the MOMA's example in NYC (below) and taking my own pictures of the actual car. I also used Tamiya's Ferrari 641 detail book and numerous google images. I also looked at the builds of others to see which judgments they felt were accurate in either/or areas. I tried to find engine plumbing schematics for the Ferrari engine, but could not find anything. I will probably roll out pictures by subassembly: wheels, brakes, torsion bars, wings, monocoque, engine, etc. In the spirit of improvement and/or accuracy, I invite you to be as critical as you like when leaving comments.
