Clay Posted February 17, 2008 Posted February 17, 2008 This car came with a lot that I purchased off of ebay and I have no idea what it is. Can anyone help me?
VW Dave Posted February 17, 2008 Posted February 17, 2008 That's the famous Chrysler Turbine Car. Here's one of the real ones, which I photographed at the Petersen Museum in February '05:

MrObsessive Posted February 17, 2008 Posted February 17, 2008 That looks like one of the early ones molded in bronze. Here's one I did a little while ago-------one of the later reissues......... If you're attempting a rebuild of that one, I should tell you that it's NOT for the faint of heart! It's ranked as one of the most difficult kits ever made.............but with some patience and time it CAN be built!

If he chooses to rebuild, it might not be as daunting as it seems because someone had already tried! Not to mention as each subsequent release was done, the molds were more and more tired as mine had a TON of flash to get rid of more than anything!
CAL Posted February 17, 2008 Posted February 17, 2008 I've got a couple of those in my stash but I'm scared s***less to start them! Yeah, I think I even looked inside the box one time when I first got mine nearing ten years ago. It's going to be a while longer before I tackle that one.
HotRodaSaurus Posted February 17, 2008 Posted February 17, 2008 Well it's one of my favourite kits. I built the old Bronze version, the worst part was the flash. I wrote top Johan about this and they sent me another tree of chrome, with worse flash I love this model because of all the working details, though yes, it was complicated. If I remember the parts were described as in a special stack pack. Sorry I don't have the box now. I think this kit was included in my Worst Kit topic by one contributor. I don't know what the later version was like but did read it was a quick build. Great kit, John

The Quick build was junk: a revamped promo like model.

I don't know if I'm gonna rebuild it, cause when i tried to open the passenger side dorr it broke the side skirt off with the door

I am not sure what the evolution of the kit was, but. I have one of the last retail Turbines when Seville was trying to revive Johan, in fact Seville ended up sueing Johan for selling them junk, but that's another story. The kit I have is molded in white and is clean, crisp, and not a sliver of flashing - perhaps Seville fix this mold up? The Mercedes kits that I got at the same time wasn't the same case. Those molds were really starting to show there age. I have 3 500K Special limos all molding in different colors including one that is almost a translucent purple color. Never seen anything quite like it before. All the 500K roadster I picked up were in the classic cream color plastic and in a little better shape than the Limo. From what I was told when I got these Seville just aquired Johan and these were kits in a warehouse as part of the purchase and were shot by Johan when they were still operational. I was said nobody knew of this stock pile of kits when Johan was going under, otherwise they probably would have been sold off in an attempt to generate revenue for the troubled Johan. In any event, Seville sold what was left of Johan to a guy and California and he has been trying to revive them again, but it's been five + years and by what he has said and is doing it's a lost cause and hope. Many of the old Johan kits we are just never going to see again - ever.
FactoryStock54 Posted February 18, 2008 Posted February 18, 2008 (edited) That was a halmark of many Johan kits Specail Stack Pack, the Mercedes were the same concept. The Quick build was junk: a revamped promo like model. Jo-Han called it the "Frame-Pak;" I believe it was developed as an anti-theft feature to molify retailers of the day as there was an epidemic of people stealing kit parts from boxes back in the late 60s and 70s (I actually witnessed some older (bigger and meaner) kids doing this at a Wolworth's one time)! It got so bad that you didn't dare buy a kit if the shrink wrap was torn even a little bit. In recent years I've purchased a few copies of those old Jo-Han "Frame-Pak" kits, and the parts that were never disturbed weathered the years very well indeed! It was a very good system regardless of its original purpose! And, yes! Jo-Han DEFINITELY tried to milk those molds for everything they were worth. I find that I have to buy at least two, and usually three or four copies of each kit in order to make sure I have a complete set of useable parts. Over time, some parts lost a lot of their shape and structural integrity (most recently I discovered that the valve covers on some later isues of the 31 Cadillac had no sides whatsoever, just flash where the sides used to be!) and add to this the problem of many delicate, fragile parts becoming increasingly brittle with the passing years. Still, Jo-Han kept pumping them out in the thousands, which is why they are so common and usually so cheap on Ebay nowadays. It's a good idea to look for earlier issues of each kit (such as the original Gold Cup Series); the Turbine Car in bronze, the Mercedes Limo in that beautiful shade of maroon and the 34 roadster in cream, the 31 Caddys in their original blue (Sport Phaeton), green (cabriolet) and red (Town Car). It was a very good system regardless of its original purpose! That might have been, but it also might have been due to the delicate parts, especially on the Mercedes kits. I cannot imagine all those thin tiny parts surviving the conventional way of throwing the spurs in a pile, bagging them and stuffing them in a box. It was a good system I have never found any loose or broken parts from a Frame-Pak kit.
