I read about the HP unit, nice piece!

If I can get an i7 Dell notebook with a good software package installed, I'll jump on it. An i5 will more than likely be good enough. I just think 4gb ram is a must.

I'm looking at replacing with this endeavor my desktop PC too.

I build my own desktops so the only advice I have is to check reviews on what ever you see that looks attractive.

If you decide on a refurb, you should be able to get an idea on problems encountered with that particular model number and decide if you can accept the risks.

In the meantime I've done lots of research, more than I originally intended. A simple upgrade for an old notebook just isn't worth it. I'll mothball the thing and keep it for times of need.

I bought a used Dell e5520 with a Core i5, 8GB ram, 128 SSD and a full software Win7 64bit package already installed. I need Excel, so the basic Office progs are there, I save some cash this way. The thing is visually flawless, has a docking station and I'm happy about the deal. $325 with a 1 year guarantee since it's from a dealer. I like the full keyboard too since I use the number block a lot.

I think this unit will be good for a couple of years and is probably even quicker than my current desktop PC. I'm cleaning up my act a bit, the old PC is getting mothballed too, my desk is getting some much needed room and hopefully my computer hardware woes will come to an end for a while.

nice job on the research and purchase.

if the Dell has space inside for a regular laptop hard drive, suggest adding in an additional larger second disk drive for better file storage, a 500gb second disk is usually less than a comparable SSD.

I'm happy with the deal. I have no need for a larger capacity disk, the 120gb is more than enough for me. I am interested though in a USB 3.0 upgrade. As I understand I can do this easily using the installed card reader. I'm just not sure if the transfer rate is as quick as an installed USB 3.0 port, which the notebook does not have. Some of the Dell docking stations have a USB 3.0 port, some don't. I'll know more when I get the thing delivered.
