1959scudetto Posted April 6, 2015 Posted April 6, 2015 I just received a ca. 1977 issue of the exterior post van "Dohrn"version which has 2-piece plastic tires. I never knew that amt truck/trailer kits had such tires. Got this kit from a German ebayer, kit was opened but complete. The instructions don't show this type of tire. Any ideas?
Guest Posted April 6, 2015 Posted April 6, 2015 I remember them. AMT tried the 2 piece tires for a short time but went back to the vinyl tires.
disabled modeler Posted April 6, 2015 Posted April 6, 2015 Many of the early kits had those...both trailers and trucks...I found them almost useless and swapped them out for better ones.
scummy Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 I built the wilson livestock trailer in 1976 and it had the two peice tyres .
maxwell48098 Posted April 11, 2015 Posted April 11, 2015 Back during the '70's "energy crisis", AMT tried to the two part tires as the used a different plastic that the one piece vinyl tires. Some of the car kits also had plastic tires instead of vinyl. (FYI- pre-energy crisis vinyl tires are the ones that melt the styrene wheels if you didn't pant the contact surface). If you have any of the old kits, you'll find that the plastic on some was "milky" while others would have the white plastic turn turn tan or yellow. Both the AMT and Revell plastics were also more brittle then they are today. Those were interesting times for modelers. A.J.
Chariots of Fire Posted April 11, 2015 Posted April 11, 2015 Ever have any of those early tires actually sweat? I had a few that did and left a wet surface. There was also a time when they put in real soft rubber tires in some of the truck kits. They were fine until they started to rot, just like real ones and then they just fell apart.
