chunkypeanutbutter Posted April 11, 2015 Posted April 11, 2015 On my Beetle build, the paint came out nice, but the clearcoat is rather orange-peely. I only did one coat of clear, and it was ColorPlace clear. Should I wetsand this coat, or do another and wetsand that to make sure I don't wear through? What grit of sandpaper should I use? I have a set of Testor's sanding films that I use for sanding applications; smoothest grit? Thanks in advance.
bobthehobbyguy Posted April 11, 2015 Posted April 11, 2015 I'd suggest adding another coat clear. Then sanding with 1500. Then shoot one more coat and then polish.
chunkypeanutbutter Posted April 11, 2015 Author Posted April 11, 2015 Thanks! I'll try it. Should I wait for this coat to gas out, or would it be better to shoot the second coat now?
bobthehobbyguy Posted April 11, 2015 Posted April 11, 2015 Not sure. Is there a recoat time on the colorplace paint? Is a lacquer or enamel?
chunkypeanutbutter Posted April 12, 2015 Author Posted April 12, 2015 No repaint time, and it's an enamel.
Snake45 Posted April 12, 2015 Posted April 12, 2015 The Colorplace stuff says "enamel" on the label, but some of it comes right off with alcohol, which means lacquer to me. I'd put at least two or three more coats of that on if you're going to color-sand it. Then polish. (I do this all the time.)
chunkypeanutbutter Posted April 12, 2015 Author Posted April 12, 2015 Okay, that sounds good. Thanks, guys!
jwrass Posted April 13, 2015 Posted April 13, 2015 Miles, Not that you really need to worry about delamination problems as it won't see the elements like 1:1 I'd give it a light tooth with a grey scuff pad and some comet GO EASY then recoat with a few coats of clear and finish how you normally would.
