I have been building model for many years now, but one thing really escapes me. That is I don't know how to tell one tire apart from another. I hear builders saying 15 inch or 16 inch, and tire sizes such as 215/55 R17.

215/55 R17

.

This is really Greek to me. I mean on 1:1 tires, I understand, but on model tires I don't get it. I appreciate any help I can get. Once Modelhaus reopens, I need to know the tire sizes, because Modelhaus has such a wide variety to choose from.

It's supposed to represent the real tire size.Sometimes the measurements coincide with reality when scaled up,somtimes they don't.You have to measure the tires/rims and convert the numbers to full size.

Most of what Modelhaus has is more geared towards late '60s and earlier, and have a completely different dimension system from todays tires. In that case, referencing a site like Coker Tire https://www.cokertire.com/ might be better, as they list the dimensions of vintage tires.
