Bullitt Posted May 6, 2015 Posted May 6, 2015 Wondering if there is a standard mixture ratio, or does everyone play it by ear? Thanks
Snake45 Posted May 6, 2015 Posted May 6, 2015 Testor bottle paints vary so much in thickness--from near-water to near-molasses--that no standard "formula" can be given (I've got some that could be shot through an airbrush as-is). Just go for a mix that shoots well through YOUR equipment. You'll soon learn the "feel" you're looking for.
Art Anderson Posted May 6, 2015 Posted May 6, 2015 What Snake45 said is quite true, virtually no bottled paints are exactly the same for consistency, so really, there just isn't any set "formula" for thinning the stuff. I've found, over the past 50 years, that thinning Testors enamels with lacquer thinner, to the approximate consistency of 2% milk works for me very well. I can observe that consistency by watching the thinned paint as it "sheets down" the sides of my airbrush color jar--when that "sheeting" looks like the way 2% milk runs/slides down the sides of a glass, it's where I want it to be. LoneWolf15 Posted May 7, 2015 Posted May 7, 2015 For the 1/2 ounce bottles , I go two parts paint to one part cheap lacquer thinner . The 1/4 ounce bottles , standard colors which are thicker , I go 50 / 50 on the mix . 1/4 ounce metallics and pearls , revert back to the 2 to 1 ratio .
