A bit of superglue was laid into the groove, and the wire was placed into the groove...

The "legs" were bent and cut to length, and the water pump was mocked up...I like it!

ToneysTributeTruck500-vi.jpg

A bit of putty was applied, then sanded down, she's ready for some paint!

Some Metalizer Aluminum Plate was sprayed, then polished, and the new water pump was mocked up, this actually looks just like I pictured it in my crazy head!

I also got the tubes attached to the headers for the water lines coming from the top of the engine...those funky flat spots on the headers look like they were made for these things!

I got the fuel tank for the boat finished. I made a gas cap for it (Like the one I used on the '50 Chevy Pickup), drilled the tank, glued the cap on, and painted it with some Metalizer Aluminum Plate. It's all buffed out and ready to be installed!

I got my exhaust pipe drilled out, painted with some Metalizer Stainless Steel, buffed and installed on the frame. I also got the exhaust manifolds painted (Stainless Steel & Burnt Iron), and installed on the engine!

Next up was gluing the engine in place and getting the exhaust glued to the manifolds. This was not an easy task, trust me! I held the glued joint together for almost an hour, then jammed an X-Acto blade between the crossmember and exhaust to keep it straight...it seems to have finally worked! :banghead:

After getting the chassis for the truck completed, I moved back to the boat's engine. I glued the thermostat housing in place, cut my braided lines to size, grabbed four fittings, and started getting them attached to the headers.

Thermostat housing glued down...

Lines and fittings ready to be glued in place....

First line glued to the header...

And the second line in place. The next step will be getting the lines glued to the thermostat housing!

The fun part, getting the braided lines bent and glued down! The fittings are still loose at this point, so pay no attention to the fact they're really crooked!

I tried to get the fittings straightened up as best I could...gotta grab some thin Superglue! I also added the air cleaners to the engine, so it's ready to go!

Next, I glued the steps onto the trailer. A bit of reshaping was needed at the corners of the trailer to get all four of the steps to fit tightly. but that wasn't too hard.

ToneysTributeTruck543-vi.jpg

ToneysTributeTruck544-vi.jpg

I also got the trailer hitch painted and installed on the truck's frame. I found I'm gonna have to add a bit of wight to the nose of the boat, otherwise, the trailer tips backwards due to the weight of the engine!

Last update for tonight, a bit more insanity as far as details go. I decided the winch on the trailer needed to be more than just a spool with nothing on it. So I grabbed a piece of stranded 18 gauge wire, and wrapped it up to look like rope. I'll either paint it white, or use some chemical blackener for it, I'm not sure which way I'll go yet. I started by drilling a hole in the reel for the winch...

ToneysTributeTruck546-vi.jpg

The "rope" was placed into the hole...

ToneysTributeTruck547-vi.jpg

And the pieces I will use to join the "rope" to the "hook", something from the jewelry section of Hobby Lobby...crimp tubes! I've got enough in this small package to last me a lifetime!

ToneysTributeTruck548-vi.jpg

The reel with the "rope" wrapped around it...

ToneysTributeTruck549-vi.jpg

And the hook end pulled off of the reel. I'll need to add a small loop at the top of the bow in the boat, but a small piece of 26 gauge wire should do the trick nicely for that!

Mike, looks GREAT, but I'm trying to figure out why ya got the braided lines going from the intake, to the headers? I don't mean to question things, but I got the Hot Rod Hydro model, with boat and just the trailer, so I have to ask, whats that braided line serve to be?

Any input on this will help me know what I'm gonna be doing or attempting to do on mine.....

Mike,

A little detail criticism here, nothing bad.. your 3rd picture from the top, with the water pump in place? The water pump is partly wrong, This is a 392 Hemi, Distributor is in the back of the engine) AND shape of the valve covers, says so! Look on the "intake edge of the aluminum head..... See those 2 flat spots, one on each of the heads? Those 2 legs you have coming out the sides of your engine block, to the water pump, those legs ought to be running into those 2 flat spots, on the top inside corners one on each head.....

The water pump detail is GREAT however looks really good and also has the look of a "aftermarket" water pump that any one putting this engine in a boat would have been using! -Just the way you have it, is how a Mopar small block engine would have been, the early Hemi's were a bit different, including the first bunch of 426 Hemi's, they had head cooling passages that were piped one to the other! That changed when they made it for street use!

IF your not sure on what I'm referring too please ask, I'll show ya by editing your picture! IF your OK with that!

Everything else, is absolutely KILLER man! NICE work!

John, the braided lines are a creative "open water cooling system", a buddy gave me a link that showed different cooling systems for boats, I just modified it to look like it was right. As far as the water pump not going to the correct places on the engine...you're not supposed to notice that stuff! I'm no rivet counter, so as long as it doesn't look completely wrong, I go with it. You can find the link to the cooling systems somewhere prior to this post... Edited by Custom Mike

I had to ask on the cooling system! As it wasn't or isn't something I normally am used to seeing, in real life or on models..... Was something that just caught my eye..... The water pump however, COULD have been made the way you have it! It just takes a bit of machine work to make it happen (they have been retro fitting the water pumps from the Mopar small block 318's to 360's), to the ole early Hemi's, BUT plate those openings shut with a seal on the heads..... SO, you'd have been partly right to go that route!

But the cooling system you spoke about and shown is how I noticed the water pump! Sorry about that guy!

No problem John, I'm a big boy, I can handle criticism! And just so you've got it when you get ready to build your Hemi Hydro, here's the link to the page with boat cooling systems on it!

Rob and Ron, thanks for looking in, and I'd love to see a fleet-side version of this truck, God knows the step-side bed is a wreck!

-I bookmarked that link on the cooling systems......I'll be using that when I get to building mine! Appreciate that!

As much as I HATE to admit this, I bet I will NOT be using that 392 Hemi in that boat kit to power mine...... After-all my user name here is "426 Hemi" so. can ya guess what will take the place of the 392 Hemi? ;)

Posted (edited)

The big boy will look great in there John, but make sure it'll fit first, the two mounts for the engine would be a pain to move!

And I used the 392 out of the Revell '32 5-window, the one that comes in the Hemi Hydro leaves a lot to be desired!

Mike,

I'll have to have a look at my Hot Rod Hydro (same kit) to see what the 392 Hemi is like..... I know, I do plan to use the 426 so we'll see....... I'm up for the task, after all, I got a few trucks that could use a nice tag-along behind them! B)

Posted (edited)

The 392 in the kit is rough, to be expected seeing it's an older tool. The fit between the block halves and the heads is pretty bad, that's why I snatched the 392 from the '32 kit, it's much cleaner all the way around. I didn't want to fight with the original engine, I had enough of a fight with the hood and bed for the truck!

Mike,

Thats one thing I don't have to worry about.... the truck.............. I don't have the "set" I got a single boat and trailer, with no truck kit..... to fit to any truck I want.....

But what ya get when ya got a Hemi guy building it thats got a 392 in it already, you jump a step up to the 426.....

Mike,

I got to lookin at my kit, and yourright, BUT the engine in mine has a bit of "added" but unseen details that I'll wind up using in a Diorama of a garage.... better suited for a garage scene I think.... SO, I can tell you, the 426 Hemi will be going into this one......

AND to add to it, I think I'll be using a Dodge A100 at the "truck", to hitch the boat trailer too..... I have the PERFECT one for the job too!

I got to ask tho, did you find the trailer seemingly to be a bit "wide"????? On my kit, it looks WAY To wide for a 1/25th scale trailer, (could be me tho)!

Edited by 426-Hemi

John, that trailer is really too wide, especially if this is supposed to be a 1/25th scale boat. It's also missing tail lights, and no license plate holder either. Easy fixes, but more work for me! And the original 392 is a typical Revell engine from that era, valve details, crank details, really nice stuff for a workbench diorama!

Posted

just as I thought on the trailer, its really to wide for standard truck road transport..... I'll fix that issuse, when I getthat far! As forthe engine, YES, I'll be using that crank and head detail in a diorama that I plan to make as a garage for picture taking fun....... I MAY even attempt to mold those details to have a wayto have others for the same said garage!
