Brian 1959 Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 Hello all, I've moddeled off and on since I was a kid, I am a real life Commodity Relocation Specialist. ( TRUCK DRIVER). I am now on my 24th year, My Dad taught me how to drive one when I was 17 on a White 4000 with a 13 speed,903 cummins and if I remember correctly was a V-8. I mainly model muscle cars but I have never done big rigs. I drive a 06 386 pete with a twin turbo 475 cat. From what i've read on most of the posts nobody makes a 386 yet is that correct? We have new 387's and older 379 city trucks. If no 386's are made I would try the 379 and paint it in company colors. Going out tonight and see what model trucks I can build. Brian
crispy Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 Welcome aboard Brian! I hope we'll see some of your work. Although I haven't built a big rig in years I certainly enjoy them. Tim Ahlborn will be the guy you want to hook up with. I do believe he's built a 386, but you are correct that their is not an injection kit of that particular truck made. Again, welcome! Chris
Casey429 Posted March 1, 2008 Posted March 1, 2008 (edited) Tim did build a beautiful 386,I think he was working on mastering a conversion for the Italeri 377. BTW, welcome to the forum. My dad is also a licensed transporter of bulk commodities and materials (he hauls steel). I'm slowly learning the ropes, but dad says no trucking for me. He told me its a good backup plan, just not a smart career choice since its nothing like 30 years ago when he started. Right now I'm working for one of his friends that has 9 dump trucks. I move them around the yard aand garage and do a little wrenching. Edited March 1, 2008 by Casey429
Semi Trailer Mechanic Posted March 1, 2008 Posted March 1, 2008 What's goin' on... I too am in the indusrty I've been a trailer mechanic for 17 years now. As far as the 386,387's like the others have said no kits or conversions are out there unless you get the 1/32 scale die cast model. You can get away w/ using a Italeri 378 and an aftermarket 379 conversion kit. If ya can't build what you had in mind build what's out there like say a 359 Peterbilt or a GMC Astro. Seeing that you're a steering wheel holder HA HAAAA you've got the advantage over most on getting reference to build. Welcome to the forum.
79FlatTopDriver Posted March 1, 2008 Posted March 1, 2008 (edited) Scott, there is a 387 conversion from DeElegant Model Truck, its a bit pricy though last I checked it was $130. Might be a worthy investment and quality shouldnt be a problem seeing as they do high dollar stuff for drivers. I think he also had a Columbia and Coranado kit as well. I had the website on a post with my last post name but in the process of being out on the road for 3 weeks I forgot the password and brought in a new name. I will check and see if I can find it somewhere Edited March 1, 2008 by 79FlatTopDriver
kwtrucker Posted March 1, 2008 Posted March 1, 2008 Hi Brian, Welcome to the forum. If your looking to build a Pete 386, the hood conversion that the guys spoke of is now available at American Industrial Truck Models, website addy, www.aitruckmodels.com. This is the hood the Tim Ahlborn built the master for. It looks great. I've been building for a while, haven't finished anything in a while though. Doug
Brian 1959 Posted March 1, 2008 Author Posted March 1, 2008 Thanks guys, I went out last night with the family, didn't get a model truck to build but I did get a GPS. Spent $360 on a Magellan Maestro. I have to go to a company meeting on Sunday and then I'm off to Martinsville, Va for Monday Morning. When I get a chance I'll take a Pic of my big truck and post it. Lately its been covered with salt to much to take a real good shot of it. Brian
mackinac359 Posted March 1, 2008 Posted March 1, 2008 Brian Welcome! There is a 386 resin hood available as posted above, from American Industrial Truck Models. The conversion comes with hood/bumper and battery boxes. It is meant for the Italeri 377 kit (which will need to be modified). Tim
Aaronw Posted March 3, 2008 Posted March 3, 2008 Brian Welcome! There is a 386 resin hood available as posted above, from American Industrial Truck Models. The conversion comes with hood/bumper and battery boxes. It is meant for the Italeri 377 kit (which will need to be modified). Tim I saw that at AITM the other day, how in depth of a conversion to the 377 is it, swap a couple of parts or a good bit more?
mackinac359 Posted March 3, 2008 Posted March 3, 2008 Aaron The 377 will require a bunch of changes/modifications. Cab window shape change, door handle grind off and make new, remove the raised air cleaner intake on the cab side, remove the molded on fender section from the cab. Move cab mounts aft. Re-route exhaust piping (lengthen). Modify radiator. Modify front spring hangers for lower radiator. Make new style mirrors. Tim
Aaronw Posted March 4, 2008 Posted March 4, 2008 Thanks, that looked like an interesting conversion. Sounds like some work but would be worthwhile.
phoneguy Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 Tim, you have a little how to manual with pics for this conversion? Jerry
