Foxer Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 I'm about to start paint on a '49 Merc Woody and am wondering which I should mask off and paint first ... the body or the wood. The body is going to be flat black and the wood I'm doing by brush with oit paints. The base may be spray painted. Both steps will require masking of the other areas. I'm assuming the flat black will be difficult to cover with the light tan base for the wood, so masking off of the wood areas is necessary. This is my first woody so I'll appreciate all comments and opinions about how you did yours.
Ramfins59 Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 I've only built one woody back when the '48 Ford woody kit came out. I masked off the wood and the roof and sprayed the fenders, cowl/window frame. Then painted the wood by brush.
detailstymied Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 generally lighter colors are painted first for the reason you described.

I believe the order was mask the wood; paint the others; remove mask; remask the others; spray base coat on wood; remove mask; finish with hand-brushing the panels... Edited August 6, 2015 by fseva
Foxer Posted August 6, 2015 Author Posted August 6, 2015 You didn't sand through the wood trim, did you? (see red box below) I sure DID! The wood has been distressed considerably. This is what I'm building ... I appreciate all the answers and will consider all in my planning.

maltsr Posted August 6, 2015 Posted August 6, 2015 I used the same method as Frank on my two woodies - it worked for me
